Meanwhile Yglesias is SURPRISED that some of the people in the White House were actually ACTING like they were trying to steal an election.
WTF did he think they were doing?
This reveals a more serious level of real planning for a seizure of power than I’d guessed was happening. pic.twitter.com/k9o0pxl8v8— Matthew Yglesias (@mattyglesias) August 1, 2023

I think the part about this that various people are reacting to is that they were planning to use the military to enforce the overturned election.

(well, weeks spread out among a few summers)
Also: I feel like the revelation of these goons wanting to use the military isn’t that surprising. Fascists are fascist.

The more surprising thing was how resistant the military was to it. At least the senior leadership. Not the kind of thing I take for granted. But of course, Trump spent his entire term trashing them, so they probably weren’t feeling very coup-y.
― a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 2 August 2023 02:24 (nine months ago) link
you have to lay the groundwork for this sort of thing you cant just call up the army last minute all like what are you doing right now, the police wouldve been a better choice anyway
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 02:26 (nine months ago) link
extremely poor plan altogether, staging a coup was a tall order anyway, stealing an election on the other hand is doable under the right circumstances, i wouldve focused on that
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 02:29 (nine months ago) link
I was thinking of Nixon’s Saturday Night Massacre and how it took him so many tries to find someone who’d fire the prosecutorTrump ended up with a parallel problem, fired any guy who showed a spine at any point at all. Can’t really coup when everyone in your circle is either spineless or a pure opportunist. Or Pence. Pence was just there because he wanted to be VP despite having the least swag since Dan Quayle
― mh, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 02:48 (nine months ago) link
It was all very half-assed, like everything Trump does. Coup on the cheap. Good point about the cops, that's definitely more his base than the military (or at least than the senior military, there's inevitably fascists in the ranks).

“Rehoboth/Dewey has been one of my family's go-to family gathering spots for decades, it's nice in a classic Atlantic Seaboard way.”
It’s wonderful. I’ve been there a bunch and spent a long, mellow weekend in Dewey back in April. For people in this area it’s kind of the chilled out version of Ocean City, Maryland.
― The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 2 August 2023 11:06 (nine months ago) link
Is this where we're talking about this?
Okay Rehoboth is gays and lesbians (per my daughter at 13: "yay! SO gay!") plus families with kids. Dewey is 20somethings who drink beer. Bethany is families with kids. Ocean City is basically nonstop Spring Break.
I have a few thoughts about Cape May and northward, and Virginia Beach and southward, but I will hold those in reserve for now.
― Steely Duran (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 2 August 2023 11:19 (nine months ago) link
I mean if we’re going to have this conversation, I submit that most beachy locales in the mid-Atlantic are kind of disgusting, and that good beaches only begin Virginia Beach and south and Connecticut and north.

I am in Bethany Beach right now with my wife's family. We have visited here every year for the last 15 years. It's nice and quiet if a bit crowded on the weekend. Only thing I dislike is the drive to/from Long Island.
The sweet corn this year is amazing, fyi.

Basically, Delaware beaches rule, New Jersey beaches drool. Though per table, I don't really like most mid Atlantic beaches that much, at least not for actual beach stuff like going in the water. Up north it gets pretty, down south it gets warm, but all said and done I'd rather be in Michigan.

East Coast beaches are nice if you are able to temper your expectations about what a beach is supposed to be
― Muad'Doob (Moodles), Wednesday, 2 August 2023 13:26 (nine months ago) link
They seem like national parks or nature preserves or amusement parks, but I haven't been to many. The sand doesn't seem as fine-grained, and the waves and the water are different. That is not to say that any kind of beach is better or worse.
― youn, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 13:28 (nine months ago) link
Conversely, growing up on East Coast beaches I find West Coast beaches all weird and cold and dramatic. East Coast beaches are warm and you can just wade into the surf without being knocked down, they're mostly very friendly.

When I was a kid and learning to swim, I took lessons out at the local lake. It was one of those two week boot camp style things. Anyway, on the last day we were supposed to have a swimming test at the beach, and I walked two blocks down and about a hundred yards beyond the swim area there was a boat going around in a circle with no one at the helm. Apparently, whoever had been at the helm somehow fell overboard and the boat boomeranged back around and went over him and he died instantly. So his body was floating out there with the boat kind of circling around it and I guess sometimes over it, and the authorities had yet to arrive to stop it. So I never did have that last swim lesson. Never went in the water there again. It wasn't a very nice beach anyway. For Midwest beaches I always preferred the ones I'd go swimming in while vacationing in minnesota.

I went up to a couple lakes all the way by Ely, white iron lake and garden lake. vv nice spots.
It was pretty messed up but unless I totally blocked it out I don't recall seeing anything particularly grisly. It's one of those memories I forget but then something sparks it.

Sorry to derail back to the indictment but VG that was a good Twitter thread.
The indictment itself is damning and sickening in how brainwashed and culty the inner circle was. For example, Co-Conspirator 4, a DOJ official who tried to "fire" his supervisor for not permitting a letter to go out to "contested states" on DOJ letterhead etc.
Sadlol at Paragraph 26, quoting one 45 campaign emailing another:
26. . . . As early as mid-November, for instance, the Senior Campaign Advisor had informed the Defendant that his claims of a large number of dead voters in Georgia were untrue. With respect to the persistent false claim regarding State Farm Arena, on December 8, the Senior Campaign Advisor wrote in an email, When our research and campaign legal team can't back up any of the claims made by our Elite Strike Force Legal Team, you can see why we're 0-32 on our cases. I'll obviously hustle to help on all fronts, but it's tough to own any of this when it's all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.
