Is this the right thread to ask about how a person might pronounce “LIRR”?

East Coast beaches do not seem like beaches (as I know them).

youn, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 13:19 (nine months ago) link

i grew up spending every summer camping on beaches from Baja to Big Sur and now for the last 20 years Cape Cod and down to the Outer Banks. There's so much to enjoy in all those places for different reasons.

how so?

East Coast beaches are nice if you are able to temper your expectations about what a beach is supposed to be

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Wednesday, 2 August 2023 13:26 (nine months ago) link

They seem like national parks or nature preserves or amusement parks, but I haven't been to many. The sand doesn't seem as fine-grained, and the waves and the water are different. That is not to say that any kind of beach is better or worse.

youn, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 13:28 (nine months ago) link

Conversely, growing up on East Coast beaches I find West Coast beaches all weird and cold and dramatic. East Coast beaches are warm and you can just wade into the surf without being knocked down, they're mostly very friendly.

yeah west coast beaches arent as much about going in the water which is too bad cause i like going in the water

West coast beaches have cool dead stuff on them

Donaldlo Troomps is a dud

Maybe there needs to be "Beach, please" thread where we all get to uncloak our takes on intersections betwixt sea and sand. Personally I have said what I wish to say and I am tired.

Also Trump blows dead bears, so there's that.

the mediterranean is in many ways the best overall body of water but the beaches get a deduction for rockiness

lag∞n, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 14:25 (nine months ago) link

When I was a kid and learning to swim, I took lessons out at the local lake. It was one of those two week boot camp style things. Anyway, on the last day we were supposed to have a swimming test at the beach, and I walked two blocks down and about a hundred yards beyond the swim area there was a boat going around in a circle with no one at the helm. Apparently, whoever had been at the helm somehow fell overboard and the boat boomeranged back around and went over him and he died instantly. So his body was floating out there with the boat kind of circling around it and I guess sometimes over it, and the authorities had yet to arrive to stop it. So I never did have that last swim lesson. Never went in the water there again. It wasn't a very nice beach anyway. For Midwest beaches I always preferred the ones I'd go swimming in while vacationing in minnesota.

omar little, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 14:31 (nine months ago) link

Where in Minnesota did you go?

steely flan (suzy), Wednesday, 2 August 2023 14:34 (nine months ago) link

holy shit, i'm sorry you witnessed that

c u (crüt), Wednesday, 2 August 2023 14:34 (nine months ago) link

I went up to a couple lakes all the way by Ely, white iron lake and garden lake. vv nice spots.

It was pretty messed up but unless I totally blocked it out I don't recall seeing anything particularly grisly. It's one of those memories I forget but then something sparks it.

omar little, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 14:46 (nine months ago) link

Nope. It's pronounced "L-I-double-R." Even TV newscasters say it like that.

I lived in NYC for ~10 years and honestly think I've only ever hear it pronounced as "the train"

felicity, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 17:11 (nine months ago) link

Sorry to derail back to the indictment but VG that was a good Twitter thread.

The indictment itself is damning and sickening in how brainwashed and culty the inner circle was. For example, Co-Conspirator 4, a DOJ official who tried to "fire" his supervisor for not permitting a letter to go out to "contested states" on DOJ letterhead etc.

Sadlol at Paragraph 26, quoting one 45 campaign emailing another:

26. . . . As early as mid-November, for instance, the Senior Campaign Advisor had informed the Defendant that his claims of a large number of dead voters in Georgia were untrue. With respect to the persistent false claim regarding State Farm Arena, on December 8, the Senior Campaign Advisor wrote in an email, When our research and campaign legal team can't back up any of the claims made by our Elite Strike Force Legal Team, you can see why we're 0-32 on our cases. I'll obviously hustle to help on all fronts, but it's tough to own any of this when it's all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

lag∞n, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 17:41 (nine months ago) link

Just say the letters, jeez; you are never in such a hurry that you can't say four syllables. We are not Australians who need to give everything a cute abbreviated nickname.

Hm. Anyway. Re: indictment There's no way Donald Trump can wriggle out of this, right?

We have finally got him, right?

Right?

Steely Duran (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 2 August 2023 17:45 (nine months ago) link

Eh, we'll see.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 17:46 (nine months ago) link

feel like i double r is obvs power user talk, normal people say l i r r, and sure yeah the train but thats just the mode of transport not the name, no one has time to say long island rail road you will miss the train if you do that, lur is what you say in kennedy fried chicken at 3am

Personally I often use my cellular telephone to decide whether I will take an omnibus or a taximeter cabriolet to get to my chosen destination.

Perhaps I might deign to employ the servces of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority? One never knows.

Steely Duran (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 2 August 2023 17:54 (nine months ago) link

no one has time to say long island rail road you will miss the train

1. long island railroad is one syllable longer than l i r r.

2. if you are in danger of missing the train you say "the train".

xxxp that Giuliani quote has come up before and it's still just as funny. like he's trying to do a bit and failing terribly

mh, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 18:23 (nine months ago) link

What about “I claim these tits. These tits are mine,” though?

the new drip king (DJP), Wednesday, 2 August 2023 18:24 (nine months ago) link

ok I clicked through the actual article and, as usual, he's even worse than expected

mh, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 18:26 (nine months ago) link

I didn't realize it was the Dunphy lawsuit and that article barely touches upon the many, many, many terrible things that went on

I don't have the prior articles handy, but the jist is that Giuliani met this woman who was going through a rough time and strung her along as a not-quite-assistant that he would share all kinds of confidential info with her, refuse to actually put her on payroll, and just slipped her cash occasionally while treating her terribly (and likely highly illegally) as a not-quite-assistant not-quite-girlfriend

She has my sympathies although "I really need to move forward in life, Rudy Giuliani seems like he's moving up in the world" is not exactly the best starting point

mh, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 18:29 (nine months ago) link

One wonders what didn’t make the article

iirc Rudy promised Dunphy a $1 million-a-year job, right? And basically made her his sex slave while never actually giving her $1 million.
