"NOPA? what the hell is that? north of the panhandle?"

Yup.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 20 March 2008 23:14 (sixteen years ago) link

"Exactly. Didn't I almost run you down once? I promise next time my aim will be better. ;)"

Did you? I don't remember that, but I may have been unaware of my impending demise.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 20 March 2008 23:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Nopa the restaurant - Y/N/Maybe

remy, I don't think I'm going to make it, unfortunately

gabbneb, Thursday, 20 March 2008 23:45 (sixteen years ago) link

I've got mixed feelings about Nopa (the restaurant) generally (I've had memorable and less than memorable meals there) but it does get big thumbs up for being open so late.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 20 March 2008 23:53 (sixteen years ago) link

NOPA food is above average, you just have to wait (and wait, and wait) to get it. Apps come out okay, entrees are like 15-30 minutes after the first course clears.

Why not go with a classic SF restaurant instead? NOPA is pretty far out of the way and not really that interesting to be honest. The only reason I think it's so popular is because it's the only non-ethnic restaurant OR option of that caliber in that zipcode (well, besides RNM?).

Steve Shasta, Friday, 21 March 2008 03:51 (sixteen years ago) link

gabbneb, just go to Zuni. get the roast chicken, the caesar salad, and some oysters.

or go to PPQ way out in the avenues and get a whole crab.

Steve Shasta, Friday, 21 March 2008 03:52 (sixteen years ago) link

shasta/jaxon, i missed u guys at boredoms.

i'd love to see you while i'm living in town (and everybody else -- hi michael!)

so would either of you be available for drinks/dinner this weekend or eaarly next week?

remy bean, Friday, 21 March 2008 03:56 (sixteen years ago) link

that's exactly what I want to do the next time I'm there, Steve. Little Star doesn't measure up for you, then?

gabbneb, Friday, 21 March 2008 03:57 (sixteen years ago) link

dude, don't go to SF to get pizza. i mean, it's good for hood folx but i am trying to steer you towards something you can't get a zillion times better in NYC.

remy i am out of town til april.

Steve Shasta, Friday, 21 March 2008 03:59 (sixteen years ago) link

i really enjoyed visiting burma superstar last week

remy bean, Friday, 21 March 2008 04:00 (sixteen years ago) link

ok, i just like to have all my espressos granita'd

gabbneb, Friday, 21 March 2008 04:00 (sixteen years ago) link

ditto on the burma superstar....

if you're down with mindblowing pakistani/indian food, check lahore karahi in the tenderloin (o'farrell & leavenworth)...

pretty no frills service (if you can even call it that) but the food is the friggin megaton bomb and they play bollywood movies on the tv (and nusrat fateh ali khan if you get lucky)

i'm also really fond of fresca on fillmore in pac heights, its peruvian and their brunch is slammin.

i was also at the Boredoms show, but I was beyond baked and superfocused on the task at hand so all i saw were my smoking buddies. :) how could i have missed you guys?

BATTAGS, Friday, 21 March 2008 06:49 (sixteen years ago) link

if I attempt to go to burma superstar tomorrow around 7pm am I just asking for a four hour wait or something? we have a rare night away from the kid and no plans

akm, Friday, 21 March 2008 06:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Before you leave, call 415.350.7117 which is a non-listed number that allows you to put your name on the waiting list and when you show up at the door and get seated like you the mayor of the 'mond, your friends will be all <3.

Steve Shasta, Friday, 21 March 2008 06:55 (sixteen years ago) link

i only have a wife and no friends, but maybe she will be all <3! i will make sure to credit you though.

akm, Friday, 21 March 2008 07:09 (sixteen years ago) link

I like Nopa but RNM is far better imho. I haven't been to Burma Superstar in ages. I should go back. Steve, have you heard of L'Ardoise?

Michael White, Friday, 21 March 2008 14:39 (sixteen years ago) link

I used to love love love Burma Superstar (seriously like fav restaurant in the city), but then I got horrible horrible horrible food poisoning from something there (seriously just near-hospitalized and shit) and haven't been back mostly cuz the taste of Samosa soup still haunts my dreams (but I have been to the new Little Burma or whatever restaurant down the street--it was still awesome.)

Alex in SF, Friday, 21 March 2008 15:20 (sixteen years ago) link

battags, steve shasta & I was hanging out w/yr smoking buddies. i got there right when tim came out of a smoke filled bathroom coughing his lungs out. he went from "guh, i don't like the boredoms, why'd you guys make me come" to "FUCK YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHH!!!"

jaxon, Friday, 21 March 2008 20:03 (sixteen years ago) link

Is any SFer here on Meraki? Ad-supported P2P broadband, and they claim to have a lol hueg SF installation. I'm kinda curious whether it works.

chaki, Saturday, 22 March 2008 23:18 (sixteen years ago) link

You put a little bug on the outside of yr pad and you get internet over distributed network. Self-healing, self-updating, etc. Only cost seems to be the bug.

thanks for the burma superstar phone info, no problems getting a table (though there didn't look to be a huge line, maybe it's tapering down these days)...food was great, especially for the price

akm, Saturday, 22 March 2008 23:43 (sixteen years ago) link

down the block from there is Q which i like for brunch they have FAT mamosa's.

chaki, Saturday, 22 March 2008 23:43 (sixteen years ago) link

If you can see Free the Net in yr list of wireless networks, then it seems you can join, and they might even send you a free repeater.

libcrypt, Saturday, 22 March 2008 23:46 (sixteen years ago) link

i wonder if it's accessible in the financial district at all, I need to be able to get access from outside of my office for extracurricular work...

akm, Saturday, 22 March 2008 23:49 (sixteen years ago) link

Looks like there's some coverage near Union Square, but not much near Market + 2nd.

After reading more about this, it seems that there's no incentive to get a repeater at all. Access is wide-open for anyone who can get to the network. Also, bandwidth is 500kbit - 1mbit, not so great. Still, it seems like a cool idea and I'd put a repeater on my window if they sent me one.

libcrypt, Sunday, 23 March 2008 00:11 (sixteen years ago) link

It'd be ironic if the end result of this is SF-wide free internet, after Google, Earthlink, et al., pulled outta the deal after promising so much.

libcrypt, Sunday, 23 March 2008 00:13 (sixteen years ago) link

I still have an extra ticket for Vampire Weekend.

I didn't go, but I entertained the thought and how they would entertain their audience. And if there is any place for old world apartments in the new world.

I am so not down with abolishing rent control!

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 28 March 2008 18:21 (sixteen years ago) link

When people argue that the market is the best way to regulate housing rental prices, I like to remind them that their primary home is as susceptible to fire as their rental properties.

Michael White, Friday, 28 March 2008 18:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Looks like I've found a place! Off Valencia! With a pupuseria and a sushi place and an homemade ice cream joint across the street! And around the corner from Laughing Lotus!
