The January 4, 2021 tweet

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 13:31 (eight months ago) link

Given that we're at the point where the notion of a non-teflon human being circumventing this shit strains credulity to the point of structural meltdown, I am entertaining any and all theories on how ol' DT manages to wriggle his way out of this one. I mean, I assume it'll happen, I just don't understand how.

Prop Dramedy (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 13:31 (eight months ago) link

Maybe on a technicality, like how Bill Cosby got let out of jail? But there seem to be so many moving criminal parts here - has he hit 100 indictments yet? - that it's just as likely he dies before really paying a legal price, like Roger Ailes did.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 13:36 (eight months ago) link

And, well, more charges and indictments will probably follow. I can’t imagine how exhausting staying on top of all the legal stuff is if you have to do to for a living.

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 13:40 (eight months ago) link

Watching even five seconds of MSNBC yesterday was exhausting. I had to turn it off and watch Adam's Rib.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 13:43 (eight months ago) link

that's true every day

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 13:44 (eight months ago) link

So when dum dum *does* die, I wonder how hard it will be for his army of morons to accept? Or will we be seeing Trump campaign posters for decades to come, promoting the unbeatable dream team of Trump, JFK and Jesus?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 13:46 (eight months ago) link

I doubt JFK would be included.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 13:48 (eight months ago) link

Mussolini maybe.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 13:49 (eight months ago) link

They'll accept it immediately because there's a narrative for that: the Dems and MSM hounded him to death.

The Terroir of Tiny Town (WmC), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 13:49 (eight months ago) link

Enh, there'll still be the batshit minority posting "he's not really dead" conspiracy theories.

Three Rings for the Elven Bishop (Dan Peterson), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 13:55 (eight months ago) link

Trumpers love JFK. They're sundowning boomers living in the past, who don't have a consistent politics.

Chevy Chase drumming mystery (Boring, Maryland), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 13:59 (eight months ago) link

Hmm, how about a slate of Trump, Jesus and Walt Disney? Seems like a winner to me. I mean, Walt's been on deck for decades. "Put me in, coach, I'm ready to thaw!"

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 14:00 (eight months ago) link

How can Hillary not go full Moe Greene at this point? "And this creep wanted to lock me up? No, no--you don't lock me up, I lock you up." Profound sadness? Honestly, who is she performing for at this point? Let loose with some gloating.

She's got to stay relatively fair and neutral so that what she says does not come back to haunt her when she runs for president again in 2028.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 14:14 (eight months ago) link

So I have a Trump loving uncle, complete with a Trump flag in front of his house, that I'm honestly expecting to learn he actually was at January 6th any day now. Anyway, I try my hardest to minimize contact with him, which is fairly easy, but he was at my nephew's birthday party over the weekend and my cousin couldn't resist winding him up a little. My favorite was the exchange that caused him to get in his truck and leave...

MAGA uncle: "Why didn't Al Gore get indicted for when he tried to steal the 2000 election? Huh?"

my cousin: "Because he legally handled it through the courts and gave up when he lost the case? You do realize they are not comparable at all, don't you?"

MAGA uncle: "You liberal loonies are all the same, brainwashed fucking idiots."

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 14:37 (eight months ago) link

fair point

it is kinda funny that Republicans have increasingly adopted the fringe-left lingo, like calling everyone 'sheep' and telling everyone to 'wake up'. that's the type of thing I used to hear at like, an anti-Iraq War rally.

earosmith (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 14:40 (eight months ago) link

only they do it while all sharing the same memes and c&ping the same posts on social media and not noticing the irony

earosmith (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 14:40 (eight months ago) link

and now they hate the Iraq War too!

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 14:40 (eight months ago) link

Wasn’t fake news first used by the left in regards to Fox?

Heez, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 14:42 (eight months ago) link

Elites etc

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 14:44 (eight months ago) link

My fave conservative line is that all these indictments will help Trump. Stuff like (and this is an actual comment I saw) "I know a ton of fence sitters who are now full MAGA because this 'indictment' is an attempt to jail a political opponent." Like all these supposed fence-sitters have been neutral about Trump's endless legal and ethical malfeasance, but this is where they finally rise up with righteousness and reverence for tradition and the rule of law?

Though tbf I shouldn't even bother calling bullshit on it, since I have to remind myself the internet is still rife with bots and trolls and bad actors just there to cause trouble and instill fear and doubt.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 14:44 (eight months ago) link

― Heez, Tuesday, August 15, 2023 10:42 AM bookmarkflaglink

yeah, and there was a series of news articles between the time Trump won and inauguration warning people against 'fake news' articles on dubious web sites, which put the phrase more heavily into the mainstream and he seized on it and repurposed it.

earosmith (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 14:45 (eight months ago) link

max's c-span appearance around that time was probably the first i became aware of the term

c u (crüt), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 14:51 (eight months ago) link

max's c-span appearance was the original fake news

mh, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 14:54 (eight months ago) link

I remember that vividly, and the feeling when the term 'fake news' started slipping away and getting coopted by the right. It seemed so blatant and foreboding at the time, that might have been when I realized 'oh this is how everything is going to be now.'

love the implication that there are hordes of moderates/Dem voters who think Trump is a normal and reasonable guy who is being persecuted for political reasons. funny how that logic only applies to Trump and not Hillary or Biden

frogbs, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 14:56 (eight months ago) link

xpost Trump's primary legacy will be the ease with which he dropped a nuke into the very heart of epistemology. Constituent reality and reasoned argument are going to be nursing their wounds for decades to come and may never fully return to their pre-2006 state.

Prop Dramedy (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 15:33 (eight months ago) link

^^^ yeah from faked moon landings, to flat-earthers, to JFK Jr.'s return, to Biden really being an imposter in a rubber mask (friend of mine's brother fully believes that last one) truth has taken a hard hit.

BREAKING: Former President Trump will have his mugshot taken when he’s arraigned in Fulton County Georgia, per Sheriff Pat Labat.

lag∞n, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 15:52 (eight months ago) link

Trump will probably sell his own mugshot T-shirts saying FRAMED or something. If anyone's going to make money off his face surely he'll want a cut.

He's going to sell "framed" copies of his mugshot, and if he doesn't, someone should.

just catching up on news, just saw that 18 others were charged. fuck yes. fuck all of these people.

are there any other ga-style investigations going on in other states? there is 0% chance that trump and gang of total idiots didn't try to do the same thing in several states

z_tbd, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 18:57 (eight months ago) link

I wonder how many of those 18 are gonna take deals to testify... probably more than a few, now that they know just where this is going

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 19:08 (eight months ago) link

And Trump can't even promise them pardons to dissuade them. (Which is probably a good thing for him, because he definitely would and it would definitely leak and then he'd get charged with bribery on top of everything else.)
