I think on a bill like that Beach Boys thing in those days each band played 15-20 minutes maximum, with the headliner maybe doing 30 minutes.

On the following series of shows in early 1967 ("festival" wasn't in wide use yet...or at all, as far as rock & roll was concerned) each band played two songs, which made sense, since there were five shows a day:

It's probably 8:15 pm. One thing I've noticed from old ads is that concerts, pop or classical, would frequently start on the quarter hour, and that practice died out by the 1980s.

On the Underground Garage show, Little Steven told a funny story about how both Cream and The Who got on the bill because Mitch Ryder didn't want to do the shows and--thinking they wouldn't take the bait--stipulated in his contract negotiations that he'd only do the shows "if they brought over his two favorite British bands*" to open, but the bluff was called.

*In reality, two of his agent's other clients they'd been having issues with trying to book stateside.

Yep, Mitch didn't want to do it, so Frank Barsalona tried to tie ludicrous conditions to Mitch's appearance, e.g., "His dressing room has to be painted a specific shade of blue." Finally, he told Murray The K, "Mitch has a thing for this English band called the Who. He won't do the show unless they do it." Ryder initially said, "Those guys mean nothing. I've got tickets to sell," but then remembered he'd read that the Who had just signed to Brian Epstein's booking agency in the UK, and Ryder didn't want to potentially upset Epstein. So Barsalona called Robert Stigwood at Epstein's agency, and Stigwood said the Who would only do it for $5000. Murray agreed to that. Unbeknownst to Barsalona or Murray at the time (though accounts differ on this), Stigwood, who managed Cream, figured Barsalona held some leverage over Murray, and shoehorned Cream into the deal. Murray berated Barsalona for Cream being on the bill, and Barsalona initially didn't know he'd had anything to do with them. So Barsalona, and his Premier Talent Agency, were in the doghouse with one of the most powerful DJs in the music business, which could have potentially caused a disastrous ripple effect.

Of course, this was short-lived, as Premier soon revolutionized rock concert promotion for decades to come -- I saw his name in a U2 concert program in 1985 and thought, "Hey! He got his start with the Who!" After Barsalona died in 2012, I remember Pete Townshend giving a heartfelt remembrance at a Who show at Madison Square Garden.

My brother went, he said that General Public was "the best by far," so that gives you an idea.

So Dave Wakeling currently fronts General Public (Ranking Roger having passed in 2019), and "The English Beat starring Dave Wakeling" with no other original members.

Apparently so. I saw the latter act (at a tiny venue, not as part of some dreary festival of 80s also-rans) and they were surprisingly entertaining.

Of course, any resemblance to the beloved band of the late 70s and early 80s was almost purely coincidental.

omg, kon kan! i would totally go to that festival. it looks like fun! singing along to the oldies. i saw musical youth at the ritz the day after they were on snl and they did pass the dutchie twice.

animotion, stacy q, and shannon just reminds me that i should really go to a freestyle night the next time they have one at one of the casinos near me. those guys always headline. and they are legend. might as well bow down while i can.

Apart from General Public, these were mostly bands I didn't care about back when they were actually making new music.

GP themselves were a bit of a letdown. They made it known before the album came out (it took an unconscionably long time to be released) that Mick Jones was part of the group. Turns out he contributed one riff.

they have those hippie festivals fairly regularly in my town and none of the people who go to them EVER come in my record store. artists or crowd. they just go to the thing and do tons of drugs and stumble home somehow when its over. sometimes you will get a straggler who just wanders around town for a week. they forgot how to get home!

That festival definitely sounds like music made by and for people who aren't interested in music.

At the last two festivals I've been to, at least two (non-headline) acts have dropped out on the day they were billed to appear - they vanished from the festival app schedule and no mention was made on social media or anything. Feels a bit like gaslighting to the festival-goer but I'm guessing there could be some tricky contractual reasons and it's best just to keep quiet? Anyone know anything about how/why this happens?

Not unusual for that to happen, period, but unusual for nobody to mention the why. For festivals I go to, usually the organizer will post on FB that "so and so will unfortunately have to cancel due to <visa issues/travel issues/scheduling conflict>" and then let you know if they've replaced them or who's taking their slot, etc.

not doing that is shady and bad business. and yet a lot of promoters probably do it because they're afraid of lost revenue/ticket sales and have already written disclaimers on their site about 'lineup subject to change'. it wasn't even a festival, but one local promoter did that with the Onyx tour this year, where they were the actual headliner, and had to bail, and all he did was update the event/ticket postings to remove their name without telling anybody.

Agreed and I did have that scenario a few years ago - a non-headliner had to pull out for health reasons a day or two before and the promoter/act publicising that saved me a journey, even though I didn't get a refund. Funnily enough, one of yesterday's cancellations has just posted that their flight was cancelled. I guess you can't legislate for everything and maybe it's fair enough just to update the schedule when these things happen and you've got a ton of other things to deal with.
