I was actually going to do a poll today based on the best selling album in the UK in 1975 and one of the few albums my mum owned, "The Best of the Stylistics", but when I checked the tracklist it didn't have half the songs on it I thought it had.

i feel like we've done that one before? but yeah the Stylistics's catalogue is broken up over a few labels i think

Ok, imagine 100+ polls where we all put our top 50. All I'm asking is: are you sure?

How do you weirdos even rank albums it just seems very…neurodivergent. I just like stuff without worrying if it’s above or below another album by a completely different artist.

Don't even need to rank them beyond which 50 make the cut of course. I certainly can't get my head around putting my favorites in some kind of specific order like that either.

I could do my top 50 albums in the blink of an eye. Everyone would vote Spirit Of Eden and we'd learn nothing

I hate ranking things in lists, these lists are fun because they're casual and unranked. At the very least I'm finding a few albums in each that I've never heard, but that someone thinks is worth listening to at the same level as a bunch of classics.

if there is such a thing as neurotypicality then rating and ranking and classifying is absolutely *central* to that project despite impressive levels of projection to the contrary

there's a ton of reasons why this would be a pointless endeavour for me but other people aren't me and hey, if it makes somebody happy then there are worse things on ILM

i dunno if it has any negative effects on board usability but it's 2023 it's probably a bit late to be fretting about that

I was gonna do one of those top 50s (alphabetical, not ranked) but the minute I thought of 50 I thought of 25 more, so fuck it.

yea would get way more discussion that way I think. ultimately I kinda wonder how many people have actually heard a majority of the albums on these lists or if stuff like Remain in Light and Future Days is just gonna win every time. guess we'll find out in a week!!!

I'm gonna poll my favorite 50 versions of Mahler's Resurrection Symphony

The poll results are beside the point imo, obviously the most recognizable albums are gonna win in each one, like with all polls. But yeah I hope people check out some of the lesser known stuff, that's the good part.

I also found the exercise of putting down that many albums I have truly loved to be fun. Made me think about what I really appreciate about this music.

I've got as far as "Cyclops Nuclear Submarine Captain" by Dogbowl, just another 49 to go...

i'm neurodivergent and ranking albums makes no sense to me, albums are just albums, the album i like most is whatever album i'm listening to, why would i be listening to an album and like another album better?
