This is our local county mayor (and former pro wrestler), but it's representative of the weird idolatry that mugshot is inspiring on the right.

Here's the moral of the story: hate @realDonaldTrump all you want. But NO ONE stands up against the Establishment like he does. Thanks to that mugshot, he now represents anyone who has ever been stepped on or screwed over by The Man. Good luck stopping him.

I have a lot of respect for this local burger joint up the road from me, which is popular with a very normie suburban crowd but DGAF.

Straight Outta https://t.co/labTsqt1cJ records listed his height as 6-patties-3oz and his weight as 215 calories. The source of the jail's information is unclear, and it appeared online before the burger arrived at the jailhouse. 🦍🍔🍻🤥🥸 #knoxville #burgertime #burgers pic.twitter.com/sK8gy84206

Even as he remains the clear frontrunner for the Republican nomination, the cascading indictments are likely to take a toll on his general election prospects.

By all means drag the party down with you.

I mean, he's been doing exactly that since the moment he was elected. Lost seats in both midterms, pushed insane losers as candidates for entirely winnable state elections...he's poison, but people (not only journalists but actual humans) continue to insist he's a genius because he tumbled backward into the presidency through an unrepeatable combination of lucky breaks.

If he retains the nomination, his presence on the ballot (and his inevitable endorsement of whackadoodle downticket candidates) might have the very welcome effect of dragging the party down. Possibly flipping some close raves and maybe giving the Ds some traction on clawing back a legislature or two.

Note: not arguing for a Trump candidacy as a good 4D chess move. Just speculation.

This is happening right now, but the judge has already apparently rejected both the defense *and* DOJ's suggested trial date. But this is intriguing:

Judge Chutkan at Trump election case hearing: “Setting a trial date does not depend and should not depend on the defendant’s personal and professional obligations. Mr Trump, like any defendant, will have to make the trial date work regardless of his schedule.”

He's clearly trying to move his case to federal court because he has some deal with Jack Smith, right?

that video of Roger Stone admitting they'd lost the election and then dictating how they were going to pursue a criminal conspiracy to overturn the result is pretty wild. I find it crazy that it wasn't cctv footage - he'd invited a film crew in and he just carried on like this in front of them!

"Muh rallies!"

what about the other 3 trials? I assume they'll be scheduled in 2024 as well? seems pretty bad for Donnie, I don't care what conservatives say having to spend a big chunk of your campaign on trial for trying to subvert the last election does not bode well for his chances

deep wubs and tribral rhythms (Boring, Maryland), Monday, 28 August 2023 16:53 (eight months ago) link

I don't say this to join the doom and gloom brigade -- overall I think these trials are bad for him and good for us sane Americans -- but it is a bit of a bummer that they are going to provide a constant stream of dramatic inflammatory content in the lead up to the election. The chance was pretty slim anyway that the media would have learned any lessons about not feeding the beast, but with all this shit going on that chance drops to 0. And if 2016 taught us anything it's that there's not really such a thing as bad press for this guy. Ah well, nevertheless

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Monday, 28 August 2023 17:22 (eight months ago) link

The thing is, the media matter less now; what happens is in the hands of the judges who must watch as Trump exhausts their patience.

Hey now, like I said, I think these are good developments. I am just bracing myself for his nonstop visage to continue to be everywhere for the foreseeable future. I recognize that was gonna happen anyway, it’s just an unpleasant aspect of the reality we live in, allow me to vent about that unpleasantness

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Monday, 28 August 2023 17:39 (eight months ago) link

think of it this way, if somebody came to me to sponsor their youth baseball league, and they already had a decent amount of cash from their other sponsors, but they needed just that last little piece to get them across the finish line to cover operations.

and all of the other sponsors were eager and believed in the brand, whereas I was opportunistic and self-serving - I thought all of the kids and parents in the league were shitty, garbage people, and figured "ehh, the league will probably fold mid-season, for me it's a tax write-off and and I'll build my brand and look like I care about youth, win-win, besides Pony League sucks" and then they preceded to be the worst little shits in the world and at the center of a number of terrible in-town controversies, hurting my brand, and then they somehow made it through the end of the season....

and they come back to me to re-up my sponsorship for the next year, and the other sponsors were still mega enthusiastic but I said "fuck no, not after what happened last time"....

that's basically Trump. he got the outside help he needed in 2016 from a lot of naive, stupid people who don't want any part of him again, and he can't win without them.

I can't turn a fart into a question (Neanderthal), Monday, 28 August 2023 17:44 (eight months ago) link

We already know that Trump's most eager followers have a huge appetite for social destruction, so his crimes matter nothing to them. In this primary phase of the election the main question is whether the less nihilistic, more laissez-faire Republicans continue to wash Trump's feet and dry them with their hair.
