College rock circa 1989 was certainly REM, Replacements, Pixies. It also encompassed more venerable post-punk like Smiths, Cure, Talking Heads. Depeche Mode.

Plus some things that were actually pretty poppy - Blind Melon, Blues Traveler, BNL, etc.

Pontius Pilates (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 31 August 2023 02:30 (eight months ago) link

I listened to the college radio station KUSF throughout the 80s and from what I remember college rock was a reference to indie bands from the 80. It didn't translate to the 90s

Dan S, Thursday, 31 August 2023 02:37 (eight months ago) link

ymp those last 3 were definitely not on radio in 89. there were probably some analogous artists, but I can't think who atm

peace, man, Thursday, 31 August 2023 02:40 (eight months ago) link

89/90 maybe Tracy Chapman, Suzanne Vega.

90, Sundays? NIN?

You're correct, though - Blind Melon, Smashing Pumpkins, Goo Goo, Hootie etc would have been more like 92/93.

Pontius Pilates (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 31 August 2023 02:46 (eight months ago) link

I'm thinking like Hoodoo Gurus, Smithereens, Stan Ridgway solo

A non-commercial educational station (NCE station) is a radio station or television station that does not accept on-air advertisements (TV ads or radio ads), as defined in the United States by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and was originally intended to offer educational programming as part, or whole, of its programming. NCE stations do not pay broadcast license fees for their non-profit uses of the radio spectrum. Stations which are almost always operated as NCE include public broadcasting, community radio, and college radio, as well as many religious broadcasting stations.

On the FM broadcast band, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has reserved the lowest 20 channels, 201~220 (88.1~91.9 MHz) for NCE stations only. This is known as the reserved band, sometimes known by the term "left of the dial" (taken from the Replacements song of the same name)

Yes, it's what I thought, it's a different thing altogether. "Student disco" is obviously pejorative and college rock isn't - and it's seems it even covers a different time period.

"skot is a legendary shitposter and also did not challenge the hoi polloi"

wait, am i really shitty? isn't that like people on 4chan posting pictures of dead bodies or something? maybe i'm just too prolific. i don't know about the hoi polloi.

i did post a lot of pictures back in the day. sorry. i was excitable! man, i had a lot going on back then.

scott seward, Sunday, 3 September 2023 18:15 (eight months ago) link

tbf you did use to flood threads with images that you didn't like. I assume that iswhat the poster refers to?

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Sunday, 3 September 2023 18:42 (eight months ago) link

weirdly i used to think i was defending ilx by doing that when some random asshole would be an asshole on a thread. random googlers! i was trying to defend the poptimist castle! but i realize how annoying i could be. i just hate the word shit so much. it makes me think of shit.

scott seward, Sunday, 3 September 2023 18:59 (eight months ago) link

defending ilm from stupid asshole posts was a noble gesture but sadly here we are in 2023

da elephant in daruma (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 3 September 2023 19:04 (eight months ago) link

I had hoped that post was meant as a compliment of some sort. Now I am not so sure.

The Thin, Wild Mercury Rising (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 3 September 2023 19:06 (eight months ago) link

eh, its okay. i know i'm not for everybody. who is? well, ned, i guess. but i'd like to think i've toned things down a bit. i kinda just want to stick to my 80s thread on ilm now. its a good spot to park myself. someone compared me to bimble on there! ah, bimble.
i just came back to chat, really. and i missed the folks here. i can't talk to anyone else on the internet. everyone is so slow. here the brains still work a little. i don't mean any harm though. i don't defend castles anymore.

scott seward, Sunday, 3 September 2023 20:22 (eight months ago) link

I do think that post was meant as a compliment but anyway scott ilx is richer for having you along

earmarked for industry iirc

I wept because I had no shoes until I met a person who had no feet.

i was watching a documentary on lon chaney and they talked about the getup chaney used to convincingly pass as someone who had both legs amputated and my girlfriend asked if i was watching a film about kink. then the doco talked about how chaney did "the hunchback of notre dame" and she didn't believe me when i said i wasn't watching a film about kink.

the point is that i don't get that aphorism. not just because there's no use crying over lost feet, but because there are all kinds of reasons people lose their feet. i mean, most of those reasons are tragic, but maybe the person in question had apotemnophilia. i'm not gonna judge.

I think it was more like he flooded threads he didn't like with images.

Anyway, the skot seward image bomb was a classic bit.

peace, man, Monday, 4 September 2023 02:31 (eight months ago) link

How can I say this? Skot is a classic old school ILX0r who was here for quite a while before I got here. There might be quite a few areas where I don’t see eye-to-eye with him tastewise, but not always. I really value his contribution on things where we do overlap and on other things I might not have known about without him. I feel similarly to him as I do about unperson.

i like where this is headed. like being at my own funeral.

i just don't want to be like that old t.v. show you used to watch and then you see it again after years and you're like "was this ever really very good?". you know?

i'll stick with my strengths.

I stopped going to specific boards here a long time ago, always weird to hear references to ilm specifically or something... it’s all one place via “site new answers” for me. If I actually start a thread I’ll pay attention to where it belongs but that’s it.
