I thought he was going blind. Did he rebrand as sighted?

He really tried to rebrand? As sensible? Guess I could look this up somewhere.

No doubt in my mind that's the right decision, even though it will be escalate the level of media pundit bloviation, incessant public chatter, and general political tension to nearly unbearable levels.

looks like the result of the hearing is that Chesebro and Powell will be tried together starting Oct. 23, it has not been determined whether the other 17 defendants will also be a part of that trial, but the judge said he was skeptical that they should be.

That needs a snappy portmanteau like PoBro or Chesebrowell or CheeseBowel.

still stunned at Tarrio getting 22 years, I mean no sympathy for that guy obviously but that's pretty harsh. and I think it then follows that Trump himself deserves 2222 years, though I suspect it's probably gonna be 3 months of house arrest at Mar-a-Lago or something. though I guess we've reached such a bizarre point in US History that it seems useless to speculate anything.

oath keeper guy got 18, same ballpark for the masterminds, if the mob had been antifa they wouldve tried to put terrorism charges on ever last person within a mile of the capitol

I'll admit that I haven't been following the details of who did what but didn't Tarrio plot and attempt a coup? How is 22 years harsh?

i'm not really following the details either but was he really the main guy? did this shit really start with the Proud Boys? feel like if that was the case he wouldn't have been out on bail

frogbs, Thursday, 7 September 2023 00:03 (seven months ago) link

i dont think anyones saying they caused the whole thing but they did make a seditious plot and then carry it out

lag∞n, Thursday, 7 September 2023 00:18 (seven months ago) link

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 7 September 2023 00:20 (seven months ago) link

idk its just seeing these guys actually face serious consequences feels so weird, seems like the only time they face this stuff is when they literally execute a mass shooting. and even then you get to pick up a Whopper™ on your way to jail

apparently the saudis have, or are about to, execute a dude for tweeting to his eight followers

given the historical punishments, this guy is getting off pretty easy for legit sedition

mookieproof, Thursday, 7 September 2023 02:21 (seven months ago) link

he defense was apparently "i was not in DC on jan 6" which is true, and seems pretty exculpatory until you hear what he did before and on jan 6.

― frogbs,

Tarrio was the Proud Boys leader.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 7 September 2023 12:21 (seven months ago) link

leader of an organized group that used code words and allusions to tell the members to do exactly what they did, and one cooperating member testified that it was clear to him and others exactly what they were being told to do. Tarrio wasn’t there but was sending encrypted messages saying things like “keep doing it” on January 6

Roger Stone squeaked out with a presidential commutation and pardon but I would guess any coordination he did as one of a handful of people that talked to multiple groups was also vague. So the loosely-affiliated groups and assorted qanon types at the capitol were really waiting for some sort of orders and the most they got was Trump making vague tweets.

I don't know if this makes me a bad person, as I have severe issues with the carceral system, but it did me good to read about these vile, racist pieces of shit and how long they're likely to spend in prison for what they've done.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 7 September 2023 13:40 (seven months ago) link

maybe because Miami has thousands of Tarrio wannabes who may turn to video games and porn for their jollies instead of harassing trans folks and waving flags.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 7 September 2023 13:41 (seven months ago) link

Apparently Tarrio was offered a plea deal (9-11 years) that he passed on.

Before trial, USA offered Proud Boys plea deals, revealed yesterday. They passed. Result:
Offer | Sentence after trial
Tarrio 9-11 yrs| 22 yrs
Nordean 6-8 yrs | 18 yrs
Biggs 6-8 yrs | 17 yrs
Rehl 6-7 yrs | 15 yrs
Pezzola 4-5 yrs | 10 yrs

What about Gavin? I know he stepped down as leader or whatever but... it's weird to me that he was never even kicked out of the U.S. Does that mean he does a ton of snitching/informing in addition to whatever other garbage he gets up to?

dell (del), Thursday, 7 September 2023 13:55 (seven months ago) link

The judge has made a point that he's picking sentences between the gov. requested max and the defense mins mostly (iirc) because he's not embracing the full terrorism scope of the charges, since what these assholes did was nonetheless not quite at the level of driving a U-Haul full of explosives into a government building (essentially judge's opinion). Though metaphorically at least that's exactly what they did, which is why they still got pretty stiff sentences.

My biggest schadenfreude hope is that Pezzola yelling "Trump won!" after crying on the stand and claiming he was no longer political hurts all future Jan. 6 defendants going forward. Not to mention dickholes like Kyle Rittenhouse.
