I woke up last night smelling smoke - went outside and it was stronger, very triggering memories of NSW fucked up summer of bushfires a few years back - eventually found out it was hazard reduction burning (ie controlled)… but for the first time really missed Twitter as a quick go-to for community updates.

I mean I know it is still there but not on my phone it isn’t - and finding the right info seems kind of totally impossible anymore anyway

Had a somewhat similar experience last night when we were out walking. We could see and hear a big fireworks show going off on the other side of the San Gabriel Valley at the unusual time of 11:30pm - especially for that big of a show. Community twitterbots are all gone and all other social media was useless. Even got out my phone's compass and surveying app to figure out what park in El Monte it was coming from, but still nothing.

opened it a few times on NFL Sunday and was surprised by how dead it's become, half the people I follow just don't tweet anymore or do so infrequently. just doesn't seem there's much motivation to be "good on Twitter" anymore

yeah the numbers we keep seeing twitter ad revenue down 50% etc seem low, maybe awful new musk coded posters are picking up the slack some but if so that cant last theyre bad posters and will get sick of each other if no one else is around

barstool gets clever with the copyright infringement

Katz and Portnoy were filming a December 2020 episode of their online NFL gambling show, The Barstool Sports Advisors. Portnoy was struggling to remember the lyrics to MC Hammer’s song “U Can’t Touch This,” so his co-host played it on his phone.

After five seconds spent listening to the ’80s pop-rap hit, Katz announced, unprompted, “We’re going to have to put this on a burner now.” The music continued, and an off-camera participant can barely be overheard chiming in, “Yeah,” with a laugh.

Using the song on-air, even via Katz’s phone, could have been interpreted by the rights-holders as violating copyright law. The gambling show’s Twitter account spelled out the problem that night in a reply tweet. “Full video couldn’t be posted because of the music,” @BSSAdvisors wrote.

So how might Barstool avoid this pesky IP problem?

In a corner of the Barstool tweet, you’ll find a link to a much smaller Twitter account: @ChuckTamato. Clicking the link reveals that this account, which had no bio and only a handful of followers, had originally posted an unlabeled two-minute clip of the show, not Barstool.

Thanks to Twitter’s easy-to-use video-sharing function, @BSSAdvisers then uploaded and embedded what appeared to be a @ChuckTamato-created video, added text, and sent it out to their then-80,000-plus followers. The main Barstool Sports Twitter account, which had 2.6 million followers at the time, shared the same clip 10 minutes later, as did Portnoy.

citizen app is good for that type of thing too. Also don't look at comments or anything but certainly good for those "why are there so many sirens?" moments.

I had to remove that app from my phone because, while it was useful for that stuff, it also liked to alert me to things happening over 30 miles away for no reason. also after a while, I decided I was better off not knowing every single 'incident' that happens in my 10000000 incidents a day metro area.
