All of those insights are OTM and I've been trying to convey similar points to say, my parents, when they get all wrapped up and baffled by the mindset of Trump supporters (usually in relation to the latest daily "scandal" or SCANDAL).

Last bit is really "he's fun(ny), and my personal situation did not worsen under him"

Except for a lot of them their personal situation did worsen, but they just don't care. I remember earlier this year seeing social media posts and even people talking irl about "those great gas prices three years ago" and I'm like, "Do you remember why those prices were so low? You couldn't even drive down the block to get a hamburger!" (Except I don't really say this out loud because I don't wanna engage with these idiots)

Also you would never get anywhere trying to convince them to agree with you're understanding of the cause / effect and who is responsible and why and that anything was even happening or what is real etc. It's a bottomless pit full of plummeting goal posts. They would begin their productive journey with you by disputing their personal ability to get a hamburger at any given point.

Adam Serwer said it best: the cruelty is the point. Dat's dat.

yeah the reward of trumpsim is more psychosocial than material, but better than nothing i guess

lag∞n, Monday, 11 September 2023 15:10 (seven months ago) link

ironically the place where trumpists paid the biggest price was one where trump actually differed from them, covid

lag∞n, Monday, 11 September 2023 15:11 (seven months ago) link

shd be noted i guess that trump did promise material and status gains in make america great again but did not deliver

lag∞n, Monday, 11 September 2023 15:13 (seven months ago) link

feel like "sensationalism by any means" is more applicable to all related situations/stunts/persona than "cruelty", though I am not disputing the word in any other sense

xps

Evan, Monday, 11 September 2023 15:14 (seven months ago) link

yeah cruelty is only part of the mix, desantis is a good example of when you just do the cruelty

Oh but ask a supporter and they'll gladly provide a list or tell you what could have happened if it weren't for all that relentless lib opposition, but that goes without saying

Evan, Monday, 11 September 2023 15:17 (seven months ago) link

you gotta win thats the point baby, which is something the dem party doesnt understand too well either lol

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Monday, 11 September 2023 15:19 (seven months ago) link

fundamental to the Trump cult (and most other fascist regimes) is that Trump tried to provide material gains but was thwarted by the internal enemies/deep state.

Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Monday, 11 September 2023 15:19 (seven months ago) link

yeah idk if it can be overstated how little people actually connect actual government action to the material conditions in their own lives other than services and prices being bad when they need things. like there's probably a shitload of boomers who have no need to move who have no idea mortgage rates are high. probably noticing that car loan rates are high, though

So Chuck Todd finally fucks off as host of Meet the Press, and Kristin Welker, a somewhat respectable for-real journalist, takes over, and her first episode is an interview with this sack of shit? (Which I have not watched, and will not be watching.) I mean, I can't think of a better way to squander whatever good will people might have had for her on Day One. Jesus fuck.

She's a parody of every idiot reporter who asked Trump golly-gee questions in 2016,

hat trick of trashiness (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 17 September 2023 16:17 (seven months ago) link

The desire on the part of all these media conglomerates to fuck over the majority of their audience to court the diminishing demographic of Trump lovers, who have been bred to hate "MSM" on-sight regardless of how respectfully they treat that orange piece of shit, is genuinely baffling to me.

Like, for eg, surely the NYT's natural constituency isn't craving hagiographical treatment for Trump? While alienate them to win over an audience that is not win-overable?

so did he really say the whole idea to overturn the election was his in this interview? Is that like...a wise thing to say if you are facing charges for doing exactly this? because it doesn't seem like a very wise thing to say.

I should stop being surprised by shit like MTP pulled at this point. It's clear that every arm of the American media landscape - left, right and purported center - is practically frothing at the mouth to keep Trump in the narrative as long as possible, because clicks and eyeballs.

its wild how the conservative strategy is just whining about everything and never being appeased no matter how much everyone bends over backwards for you just seems to always work with these morons

frogbs, Monday, 18 September 2023 14:47 (seven months ago) link

The basic appeal is to white grievance, which is perpetual, and therefore the strategy is also.
