there were crazy lightning strikes over the hills Saturday night and yeah normally I would have searched twitter to see wtf was going on but instead I read a bunch of lightning articles on wikipedia

twitter used to be so good for weird smells

I miss earthquake twitter

It's really something that nextdoor is now the less racist of the two.

Chyiv Kyiv (Fetchboy), Monday, 11 September 2023 16:13 (seven months ago) link

they never report the good news like when someone puts a second catalytic converter in your car at night

citizen app is good for that type of thing too. Also don't look at comments or anything but certainly good for those "why are there so many sirens?" moments.

dan selzer, Monday, 11 September 2023 18:44 (seven months ago) link

I had to remove that app from my phone because, while it was useful for that stuff, it also liked to alert me to things happening over 30 miles away for no reason. also after a while, I decided I was better off not knowing every single 'incident' that happens in my 10000000 incidents a day metro area.

I don’t have any kind of alerts on for citizen. That would be a nightmare. I just open if Jo when I hear a bunch of helicopters flying around or whatever.

citizen app is evil, i dont recall the details but i read some shit about them

lag∞n, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 14:01 (seven months ago) link

citizen was originally called "vigilante", beta tested deploying private security by app, and offered a $30k bounty on a man (falsely) accused of starting a wildfire. real scum of the earth.

I tweeted an obit for a jazz musician and the only like was from some blue check anti-trans doctor, so that's weird & fucked.

X (Twitter) stripped the UAW’s verification checkmark following the union’s decision to go on strike against the Big Three automakers.

Musk’s Tesla has overseen a slash-and-burn campaign against union organizers in recent months.

I have become a Twitter Main Character today for posting that a metal band I like should have dressed better to be on the cover of a magazine. It's kinda hilarious. If the people responding thought I was a woman, it would probably be a whole lot less hilarious and a whole lot more death- and rape-threat-y, but for now it's all good fun and has even included a reasonable and thoughtful exchange with a member of the band in question. Still, I haven't riled this many people up in a long time. It's exhilarating.

lol. I essentially agree with you, but also think rocking a Fido Dido shirt on a magazine cover in 2023 is some kind of weird flex.

I like the new Tomb Mold record a lot. But death metal bands really need to understand that getting your picture on a magazine cover fucking means something, and meet the moment. Death metal needs more Akercockes, and fewer examples of...this. pic.twitter.com/TqWIAPWYYb

I'm sure they're great guys! I've been going back and forth with the guy in the Resident Evil shirt, and he seems smart and cool. But metal band photos are not the time or place to look like normal schlubs. If you're in a metal band, and it's picture day, you wear denim and leather, you scowl at the camera... I follow Rob Halford on Instagram, and he posts tons of pictures of himself wearing shirts with cute kittens on them. But does he wear those shirts in the promo photos for the latest Judas Priest album? He does not. It's about embracing the showbiz of it all. You wanna be anti-showbiz? Join an indie-rock band. You wanna play metal? DRESS METAL.
