Loved Dream Warriors as a kid. I still go back and listen to a few songs now and then.

two months pass...

just a random observation about random old rap-
why was it that hiphop beats were always getting commandeered for r+b songs? like how was it that these hardcare hiphop heads were having such a delicate ear for samples? i always think of redman's "tonight's da nite" - they even literally pause the record to call him out for the "punk smooth shit" only to have the exact same beat come back on while he swears more freely lol. sure enough, that same isaac hayes sample showed up on a tlc remix a couple years later - and it sounded great!

anyway, always thought it was funny how so much 90s hiphop would go on about its own hardness. but so many of the beats were loops from old slow jams and then would get repurposed and flourish on as r+b hits for the next year or so.

(lol remember when jlo jacked the beatnuts? that was... huh yeah, that happened)

wasn't it the other way around? crate diggers and producers would come across great rnb samples but to some degree couldn't themselves put them to use in that context because of a perceived schism between rap vs. rnb

That Beatnuts bite definitely annoyed younger me.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Monday, 20 November 2023 15:31 (five months ago) link

same, but that really was snobbish of me

corrs unplugged, Monday, 20 November 2023 17:43 (five months ago) link

Yeah, I mean the bite is pretty hard, like they barely even tweaked it at all. But I care less about that stuff now.

stopped into the old bucksters just now and you'll never guess what was playing...

anyway—
ya'll remember sporty thievz? they were dope! i think "no pigeons" was one of the last true "answer records" to gain any sort of traction. they were one of the groups that i always liked because they were basically picking up on the too $hort/snoop school of not givin a fuck "we don't luv dem hoez" rhyming and jeep beats. i was mostly into backpacker shit at the time, but always checked for them because these dudes could fucking rap circles around most folks. and you knew they were certified because when rawkus did the amadou diallo benfit album (not on streaming, grrrr), they were on it.

besides "no pigeons" i always thought it was funny that the thing they were most known for previously was... basically the same song with a different beat lol

sporty thievz — "cheapskate" (1997)

of course, they got cut short when marlon brando (not to be confused with the hollywood actor) died in a freak car accident. i remember reports at the time saying that he saw the car coming and was only in harm's way to get other people out of there. idk if he "saved someone's life" or whatever, but damn: twenty fucking two. respect.

hi i'm a pendant. can we please post artist and track titles in addition to videos?

going back to spottie's first post, we have:

the jacka, fed-x+rydah j. klyde - 'the same thing everyday'
and then ums with smoothe da hustler's 'broken language'

(smoothe da hustler+trigger tha gambler-- there's a sorely forgetton ultra charismatic 90s duo!)

what does "ignorant lyrical box cutter shit" mean, serious q

budo jeru, Tuesday, 23 January 2024 01:24 (three months ago) link

was an thing old ny street rappers would mention, sneaking a box cutter into a club as a weapon

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 23 January 2024 01:26 (three months ago) link

Kind of became shorthand for a certain type of raw East Coast street rap

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 23 January 2024 01:27 (three months ago) link

ah okay, thanks for the context. and ignorant in this case means "dumb" like "stupid good" ? haha sorry to be a square

budo jeru, Tuesday, 23 January 2024 01:30 (three months ago) link

Smoothee seemingly went on to become a ghostwriter, worked on the mythical Detox album.

Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Tuesday, 23 January 2024 12:57 (three months ago) link

oh wow! i didn't know that, good for him

ignorant in this case means "dumb" like "stupid good" ? haha sorry to be a square

oh haha no worries, i guess in this context it means like uh not exactly interested in uplifting or educating the listener, just thugged out violence threat/outrageous type stuff, ill lyrical content for its own sake guess?

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 23 January 2024 14:57 (three months ago) link

He also claims he wrote Foxy Brown's verse on Jay Z's "Ain't No..."

Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Tuesday, 23 January 2024 15:13 (three months ago) link

interesting, honestly it wouldn't surprise me, he was so skilled and also seems like ghostwriting is so much more prevalent than i always thought

ums otm- i was very into that stuff at the same time as mobb deep, cnn... the nyc thug rap phenomenon, y'know? have we already forgotten about that stuff? dang.

i always wondered what became of smoothe da hustler. dmx came along shortly after and that was that, far as that stuff went. makes sense he would move to a behind the scenes role.

Just threw on an old compilation Quannum Spectrum from 1999 and it's top to bottom amazing. The beat that rolls into the opener with J5 is incredible and I forgot how great a track Storm Warning was.

ums thank you for the post re:bo$$. didn't realize she was og from detroit! found this in the tmz news piece about her-

DJ Premier also weighed in, praising Bo$$ as a talented legend, and made a public plea for Def Jam to release a collab he'd recorded with her in 1993.

i'd like to join our friend mr. martin in his plea to def jam. unreleased 93 premier beats, are you kidding!!??
