there’s an entire late gen x early millennial cohort who think the x-files were sexy and cool

every magazine article about the show or an interview accompanied by the hottest scully and mulder pics when they were too busy finding the knife alien or getting alien embryos implanted to actually do it

i’m early millennial but i unjustly disdain xfiles as nothing but corporate-processed twin peaks (yes i’m sure i’m not gen x)

difficult listening hour, Sunday, 24 September 2023 22:37 (seven months ago) link

I used to sneak into my parents room (at 9pm) as an eight year old to watch the X Files, show is and was legit though I stopped watching around s4 or so. The knife alien tweet is all time.

ydkb (gyac), Sunday, 24 September 2023 22:40 (seven months ago) link

many xposts but Millennium was MAYBE good for two seasons, and that’s generous allowing that s1 was patchy.
s3 was a dud. but s2 legit great.
so it had one great season.

no way that eclipses xfiles! unless yr just being some contrarian rockist out here trying to love a show no one remembers well enough to argue with you :)

X-Files was legitimately good to great for five, maybe six seasons give or take. even the worst monsters of the week eps were just the vegetables you ate to get closer to another alien story arc, which WERE consistently fucking great tv and that was reliably true for a few years before it fell apart.

I guess I've just never given a fuck about aliens. I assume extraterrestrial life is already here, and we just don't know it because it's in the form of, like, lichen, or a vapor, or those things that swim around in our eyeballs. Not little dudes who want to communicate with us/probe us/kidnap us back to their ship. There is no ship. So Millennium, which was all about all the fucked-up things we tell each other to justify/excuse horrible deeds, was inherently much more interesting to me.

read-only (unperson), Sunday, 24 September 2023 23:43 (seven months ago) link

There is no sense in which the X-Files isn't about that, though.

a show no one remembers well enough to argue with you

I've seen at least two articles on it in the last fortnight, due to the 30-year anniversary.

Also "The Postmodern Prometheus" episode is one of the finest episodes of television made in the 90s.

better descriptors.

I've seen a few episodes here and there over the years but never watched it when it was on. Gotta say, it's kind of mind-boggling, when you think about it, that most (American) TV shows typically had 22 episodes a season or whatever, let alone shows with location shoots and relatively high budgets. It's always so daunting when nostalgia directs me back to rewatch something I once enjoyed and I realize what a commitment it would require.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 25 September 2023 02:40 (seven months ago) link

one episode that has always stuck with me as being fun was the one with Luke Wilson, a sort of rashoman where the story is retold a few times and each time Wilson's acting changes to suit how mulder and scully remember him.

dan selzer, Monday, 25 September 2023 03:01 (seven months ago) link

"Bad Blood" - a classic.

The one that's on my short list of best TV episodes of all time is "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose," from Season 3.

Re: the commitment of 22 episodes a season - most shows that do that have some kind of formula that makes it a little easier, but the really astonishing thing about the x-files is that it managed that without having much of a formula beyond "Mulder and Scully investigate something wacky." You never quite knew what you were going to get.

Lily Dale, Monday, 25 September 2023 03:08 (seven months ago) link

What was the one with the split screen thing going on? that was a good ep, I recall, and funny.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 25 September 2023 06:56 (seven months ago) link

I liked the one with the mastodon.

nashwan, Monday, 25 September 2023 09:08 (seven months ago) link

I've been watching the X-Files straight through for the first time. Only caught them sporadically when they first ran, so I never really understood what was going on. I just finished season 2 and started season 3 and although there have been some fun episodes, I definitely didn't fully comprehend the melodrama I was in for. "You've been making reports on me since the beginning, Scully - taking your little notes!"

There's also a lot of stuff where my disbelief refuses to suspend itself. Not in terms of vampires or telekinetic abilities, but seeing something where I'm like, there is no WAY that's the correct FBI procedure for interrogating a witness or containing a biohazard or whatever. Maybe I'm just spoiled from having decades of police procedurals and gritty prestige TV laying it all out there.

x-files is the funniest version of a tv show not putting characters in protective gear because it makes it harder to show the actors responding to things

alien spores? virus spread by a sewage monster? parasite that just reappeared from the neolithic era? we’ll just tromp around in our normal fbi outfits like normal
