Reportedly he's scheduled to be deposed in the Peter Strzok/Lisa Page thing, which is ironic on so many levels. He talked shit about them and interfered in their firing, so they filed a civil suit, which draws him in for a deposition where he will no doubt (given his track record) open himself up to further legal action.

Trump has similar factors to Biden too...be funny if both of them died on the campaign.

The Biden issue is one of them "well I wouldn't start from here" questions. Can't see that there's any younger pol who has the necessary profile + popularity to be a better bet. He has experience of campaigning and winning against Trump. And if Biden can take a big slice out of the coot vote as in 2020, that outweighs younger people thinking he's too doddery, because old people votes seem to count double.

Same here re: centrists, but there has been no prep from Democrats to prepare for a leadership change. Despise Garton Ash but the sleep is deep with that lot.

If we judge Biden by actions and results instead of how creaky his voice sounds, the consensus among US Ilxors leans towards his having been v competent and effective, and perhaps even startlingly progressive - the appearance on the picket lines this week isn't nothing, and is unprecedented. That's not what gets a vast chunk of the electorate voting though, I guess. Am very much hoping Democrats are considering who will takes the reins next, though. Newsom is very good at taking the fight to the media, but I haven't really a clue on where he stands with the larger, or even smaller, issues. Again, in the media climate we have now, that might even be a strength.

But I mean Biden could die, before the election even. But so could Trump. Welcome to the duality.

OTM. The political gerontocracy in the U.S. is a real problem, but a lot of the concerns raised about Biden's age seem to place too much weight on his ability to project a strong public image. The media, for instance, obviously wishes that he was more of a dynamic personality who could be covered as Obama and Trump were (for different reasons). But why should I care?
As long as his administration is getting stuff done, it could be Weekend at Biden's in the White House.

She's being exactly as competent and (in)visible as most other veep before Cheney. The only way the criticism makes sense is to remember what a racist society we still are.

see, that's what's crazy to me. you can be VP of the US for 4 or even 8 years and nobody will remember a single thing you did unless you did something horrifying like spell a word wrong or get sworn in as president on an airplane next to a blood-stained widow. (that's my weird memory of johnson anyway...don't know if its true...)

The other thing I remember Dan Quayle for is also JFK related, but I'm aware that even remembering him for that makes me a political junkie.

I don't know, that moment moved beyond political junkie-dom and well into pop culture.

Departing Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley:

“We are unique among the world’s militaries,” Milley said. “We don’t take an oath to a country, we don’t take an oath to a tribe, we don’t take an oath to a religion. We don’t take an oath to a king, or a queen, or a tyrant or a dictator.”

“And we don’t take an oath to a wannabe dictator,” he spat. “We take an oath to the Constitution and we take an oath to the idea that is America – and we’re willing to die to protect it.”

it's just crazy to me that the GOP used to have total boners for institutions like the Armed Forces and the FBI, now they're infested with the wokes and should be abolished

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 29 September 2023 20:23 (seven months ago) link

thing is, if they want to rip up the constitution and start instituting a dictatorship - getting the military establishment on board with this idea is quite an important part of this process!

I'm guessing there are probably more than several reasons why Milley should be executed, but him informing Bejing that he's not going to let the crazy orange man launch any nukes is not one of them.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Friday, 29 September 2023 21:05 (seven months ago) link

Our military, thank God, consists of a lot of non-white and non-Cis-male people in positions of power who would probably not look favorably on going along with a white supremacist dictatorship coup attempt.
