Ah well, there's just the "sort by seller" option in "Items I want" (note: not the "wantlist", the one under "buying")

Mark G, Tuesday, 3 October 2023 16:53 (seven months ago) link

I know this pain well. "Hmmm, wonder if I can find a seller who has The Best of Sam Cooke and the Cross My Broken Heart 12" by the Jets?"

peace, man, Tuesday, 3 October 2023 17:00 (seven months ago) link

one thing you can do is go to “items I want” in the marketplace and then filter by seller. the seller list on the sidebar is automatically sorted by the number of items they have for sale in your wantlist (descending).

brimstead, Tuesday, 3 October 2023 18:00 (seven months ago) link

I like to use the seller list when I'm hoping to find a seller with multiple items by an artist or label. recently got a bundle of Thomas Brinkmann 12"s from a guy in Poland. reasonable shipping and the records were in great condition (sleeves not so much).

bulb after bulb, Tuesday, 3 October 2023 18:09 (seven months ago) link

I really wish Reckless would resume online orders again so I wouldn't have to use Discogs as much - I bought directly from them during the pandemic, but they suspended online ordering like two years ago and still don't have it back up and running. Amoeba could be great, but they put a small fraction of their secondhand inventory online. Everyone I like locally like Academy, etc., I have to go through Discogs.

birdistheword, Tuesday, 3 October 2023 23:34 (seven months ago) link

I always click the wrong wantlist first and I'm always like "whoa, why do I have 12,00 records in my wantlist"

Does anyone actually use the Items I Want feature as opposed to just the regular Wantlist? Maybe I'm dumb but I don't understand the point of the former

save on shipping

brimstead, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 00:03 (six months ago) link

The Items I Want list is good if you like checking on a regular basis to see newly listed items.

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 13:08 (six months ago) link

Plus, you get an email when one of the things you want comes in. Then you click on the link and find someone else has nabbed it BUT STILL....

Mark G, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 15:40 (six months ago) link

^ the people who re-up their entire inventory once a day ruined this, and i opted out of the emails a long time ago

budo jeru, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 20:48 (six months ago) link

exactly

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Wednesday, 4 October 2023 21:02 (six months ago) link

that's why I use "Items I Want"

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Wednesday, 4 October 2023 21:02 (six months ago) link

so wait, you can avoid the daily spamming of the same items on your wantlist (which makes me want to commit atrocities) by using the Items I Want feature as opposed to opening those dumb emails every day? Because that may be the thing that wins me over to that feature

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 21:39 (six months ago) link

yes, it's so much better. I mean, you might miss out on an instant buy, but opening that list once a day is plenty for me and works out great compared to the constant daily spam from the re-listers, who should be banned

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Wednesday, 4 October 2023 21:41 (six months ago) link

"Items I Want" still doesn't fix that problem, like right now the first 3 pages are full of the same albums by FlashbackLondon, KUPIKU, and Lot.Of.Music in pretty much the same order they always appear. I'm amazed they haven't found a way to fix this yet, like everyone I know who uses the site complains about this

frogbs, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 22:18 (six months ago) link

do you sort by "Listed Newest"? that way I see what is actually new

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Wednesday, 4 October 2023 22:19 (six months ago) link

I use wantlister.com which filters the results by country and condition and also handles the relisting every day crap

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 22:22 (six months ago) link

I have it set to only email me items in the UK and VG+ or above

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 22:22 (six months ago) link

^ that sounds brilliant!

budo jeru, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 22:27 (six months ago) link

yeah, I definitely need that app

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 22:57 (six months ago) link

"Listed Newest" doesn't help when giant sellers are reuploading their entire stock every single day. it's always "new"

frogbs, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 22:59 (six months ago) link

ah gotcha

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Thursday, 5 October 2023 00:03 (six months ago) link

Found a mint/sealed copy of an LP I wanted, at an OK price (two others that were cheaper turned out to be unavailable). It arrived pretty quickly, but the seller in their haste to package it but a staple through the top right corner of the outer and inner sleeves. I gave neutral feedback accordingly; the seller appealed for me to change it (which isn’t possible) and offered a discount, but qualified it with spiel about their margins. Dude, it was your mistake and that’s the cost of doing business. Nevertheless I felt pressured into removing my feedback. I’ll get a few euros back, probably, but that’s not really the point, is it?

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Thursday, 5 October 2023 09:49 (six months ago) link

I dunno, sounds like a conscientious seller who made an honest mistake then tried to make it right.
For people who work in the ratings economy (uber drivers, airbnb landlords, discogs sellers) those ratings are their brand, and you should probably only leave non-positive feedback if you're trying to warn others off of dealing with them (which doesn't sound like the case here?).

enochroot, Thursday, 5 October 2023 12:32 (six months ago) link

Unless there is wanton fuckery afoot, the expectation is that you talk to the seller to resolve problems before leaving feedback. Sometimes shit happens and I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. If they don't resolve it properly, then you leave negative feedback.

Cow_Art, Thursday, 5 October 2023 12:42 (six months ago) link

yup

budo jeru, Thursday, 5 October 2023 13:11 (six months ago) link

Fair enough; this is the first time I’ve had a problem with anything I’ve bought there since I started in 2020 or so. I’ve removed my feedback and in hindsight I should have hashed it out with the seller first, that was hasty of me.

I never hesitate to five-star etc any Uber or Amazon delivery. Yet. I feel like a Discogs seller is a different category: you’re a shop proprietor, only online, and I expect service like I'd get in any shop. Also, I’ve purchased from sellers with >100% positive feedback, because I looked to see what the issues were.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Thursday, 5 October 2023 14:13 (six months ago) link

the way i look at it, there are inevitably going to be problems that arise with mail order, whether that's something overlooked while grading or a mishap in transit. the seller's reaction to these problems is how i decide if it's a "positive" experience, because expecting there to be no issues at all is unrealistic

budo jeru, Thursday, 5 October 2023 14:27 (six months ago) link

I think it's also a bit unrealistic to expect shop-level service from Discogs sellers, some may be business sellers but a lot are just people selling off bits of their collections

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 5 October 2023 14:30 (six months ago) link

please look at feedback before buying. your chance of happiness goes WAY up when someone has good feedback. and also see how much they have sold. if they have 10,000 positive feedbacks? you are good to go. when i bought records on ebay i would only buy from people who ONLY sold records/discs.

scott seward, Thursday, 5 October 2023 14:41 (six months ago) link

yeah it's especially important now that the site is flooded with scammers. sucks because in the past people with discounted prices and low amounts of feedback were actually legit, just people trying to sell off things for quick cash

frogbs, Thursday, 5 October 2023 14:52 (six months ago) link

Neutral feedback is a fair thing though.

One time I 'won' a Nick Drake early pressing (eBay) for a low price but apparently he left it by the door and the dog attacked it so it was undespatchable.

I got refunded, but I left neutral feedback because yeah right. But it could have happened I suppose.

Anyway, I got a 'why did you do that?' email from him - I wanted to make sure he didn't pull that stunt again if it was a stunt. I didn't tell him that, and nothing further happened.

Mark G, Friday, 6 October 2023 07:55 (six months ago) link

i think it's definitely fair in that scenario

budo jeru, Friday, 6 October 2023 14:57 (six months ago) link

I just don’t leave feedback at all when it comes to weird cases like that

brimstead, Friday, 6 October 2023 16:40 (six months ago) link

oh wait, he delivered it himself??? weird

brimstead, Friday, 6 October 2023 16:49 (six months ago) link

I have actually made in-person transactions through eBay, but it's usually because 1) I offered local pickup or 2) someone noticed my item location and asked first. If it was pre-arranged, it's fine, but if they did it without telling (maybe to pocket the postage payment for themselves?), not cool.

birdistheword, Friday, 6 October 2023 18:05 (six months ago) link

I’ve hand-delivered Discogs items but will always refund the shipping in that case.

No.

Mark G, Friday, 6 October 2023 20:47 (six months ago) link

ah geez sorry I think it get it now, the seller was saying the package was damaged inside their home, not outside of yours

brimstead, Saturday, 7 October 2023 00:31 (six months ago) link

I wonder if there's a way to get your seller terms to appear in bold 40pt font.

"have you sent the CD yet?"

it would probably be a good idea to learn to read before ordering CDs on the internet

in my seller terms: "I post on Saturdays"

"oh well I didn't read that" maybe you should try to? wtf is wrong with people

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 7 October 2023 01:37 (six months ago) link

but technically it's Saturday there right? ;)

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Saturday, 7 October 2023 01:47 (six months ago) link

I ran across a weird one. Non-paying buyer. Dude has a 17% approval rating. I checked his feedback history and literally 4 out of every 5 transactions, he doesn’t complete. What the hell is he up to?

The only thing I can think of is that he randomly “buys” (but doesn’t pay for) a shit-ton of records, hoping that every once in a while a seller will accidentally post him the record …. ?

The land of dreams and endless remorse (hardcore dilettante), Saturday, 7 October 2023 01:55 (six months ago) link

I sold an Emitt Rhodes 2xCD for £30 this week but it's going to the USA so it probably won't arrive and the max I can claim from the Royal Mail is £20.

I assume some countries have a functioning mail system.

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 7 October 2023 01:56 (six months ago) link

you know, I did accidentally post a CD to someone who didn't pay a few weeks back, maybe that's their game

it was a Belle & Sebastian CD that I listed for 99p so not a big deal except the cunt was in the USA so I paid like £7 to post it

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 7 October 2023 01:58 (six months ago) link

I did post on the Discogs forum, why the fuck are they even allowing people to make orders without paying now? the only reason they allowed that before was because you had to calculate postage. now it's literally just a reason for time wasting cunts to waste your time

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 7 October 2023 01:59 (six months ago) link

I almost posted a record to a non-payer today (not the same one). Honestly I’ve had it so long and the postage would only be like $4, I almost sent it anyway with a note saying “Merry Xmas”

The land of dreams and endless remorse (hardcore dilettante), Saturday, 7 October 2023 02:09 (six months ago) link

Plus I had already packed it up and addressed it, so sunk costs.

The land of dreams and endless remorse (hardcore dilettante), Saturday, 7 October 2023 02:10 (six months ago) link

I've been more careful since I fucked that one up. I do not understand why it's so shit that it lets people make orders without paying for them. but at least I know to look out for it now.

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 7 October 2023 02:15 (six months ago) link

Far be it from me to praise eBay for anything, but now when you make on offer on an item, if the seller accepts it, the payment is immediately withdrawn from whatever payment method you have on file. I haven't yet enjoyed this feature as a seller, but I've bought a few things this way and I wish Discogs would implement something similar.

I don't get why people order things and don't pay for them. If I buy something, it's because I want the damn thing, so I always pay immediately because that's just common sense. This also leaves no time for buyer's remorse, which is I guess why people flake out on paying for the things they impulsively bid on in the wee intoxicated hours.
