I'm sure this, finally, will keep T in check

When he, finally, became presidential.

Quoth the judge, "Failure to abide by this order will result in serious sanctions." Saw somewhere that that could mean 30 days in jail.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 3 October 2023 19:38 (seven months ago) link

His lawyers probably have a hard enough job keeping the phone out of his stubby little hands during the trial, lest he be actively "truthing" during it.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 3 October 2023 19:38 (seven months ago) link

can he be taken into custody on CoC in a trial like this or is it just censure

― Its big ball chunky time (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Tuesday, October 3, 2023 10:19 AM

In theory, a contemnor of a lawful order in a civil case in New York can be fine, or arrested and jailed. It depends how far the contempt goes.

Looks like we are going to find out.

felicity, Tuesday, 3 October 2023 19:40 (seven months ago) link

fined

felicity, Tuesday, 3 October 2023 19:40 (seven months ago) link

Per a Bluesky post from Popehat/Ken White:

Annoying, insulting, or picking on courtroom staff is foolish on an entirely different level than just annoying the judge.

You have NO IDEA the array of things that can start going badly for you. And judges are VERY protective of staff.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 3 October 2023 19:41 (seven months ago) link

fuck around, fined out

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 3 October 2023 19:42 (seven months ago) link

Separately from legal reporter Adam Klasfeld, attending the trial:

One of the reasons Trump was playing with fire going after *this* clerk:

She's an active participant in Engoron's cases, and she sometimes personally questions the parties. In fact, she grilled Trump's lawyers in critical pre-trial hearings in this case. https://t.co/yxODiZhUeu

Basically he really did the stupidest thing possibly in a case where there's only one person who makes the decisions.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 3 October 2023 19:44 (seven months ago) link

Did laugh at him saying he has a 'buyer beware' statement on all his business docs saying the figures above are all BS you want the real ones hey do your own research' outside the courtroom.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 3 October 2023 19:48 (seven months ago) link

And this is only the first (second? third? fourth?) of five (six? seven? eight?) court cases, plus whatever other trouble he gets himself into.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 3 October 2023 19:49 (seven months ago) link

On the one hand, he's once again demonstrated that he's the most recklessly stupid motherfucker on earth. On the other hand, being the most recklessly stupid motherfucker on earth has served him pretty well for nearly 80 years.

At this point, I'm basically betting on him dying peacefully in his sleep just before ever having to suffer any serious repercussions of his many, many malfeasances. I mean, yes, we're leading up to lots of potential comeuppance right now but at this phase in the process it's mostly just an annoyance for him.

Prop Dramedy (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 3 October 2023 19:53 (seven months ago) link

I mean, it really is about proving that he can do literally anything and daring anyone to stop him, right? Everything is simultaneously the stupidest and the most necessary thing for him to do in the context of the persona he's cultivated

peanut filibuster parfait (Eric H.), Tuesday, 3 October 2023 19:54 (seven months ago) link

He should just go ahead and take a literal dump on the courtroom floor.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Tuesday, 3 October 2023 19:56 (seven months ago) link

“Personal attacks on members on my court staff are unacceptable, inappropriate, and I won't tolerate it [in my courtroom],” said New York State Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron.

He added later to "consider this a gag order for all parties from posting about any members of my staff."

feel like he should be able to avoid talking about court staff, if this was a gag order for the whole case theres no way lol

lag∞n, Tuesday, 3 October 2023 19:58 (seven months ago) link

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Tuesday, 3 October 2023 19:59 (seven months ago) link

lag∞n, Tuesday, 3 October 2023 20:00 (seven months ago) link

Everyone thought that seeing Trump in a courtroom would be cathartic, but little did they know he'd be sitting there posting slash/fic about the courtroom staff

Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Tuesday, 3 October 2023 20:01 (seven months ago) link

Oh, he will! At least one more thing.

The man is a black hat hacker of American democracy, whether he’s aware of it or not.

Guess he decided to behave himself for now:

As for Mr. Trump, he sat quietly during the afternoon, occasionally making comments to his lawyers as he watched one aggressively question the accountant, Donald Bender.

After court concluded, he did not respond to questions about the judge’s order but said he would return to the trial Wednesday.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 3 October 2023 23:31 (seven months ago) link

Maybe he'll learn something. Wouldn't it be funny if he went to jail and got a law degree? After he converted to Islam?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 3 October 2023 23:37 (seven months ago) link

What if Trump started publishing a ‘zine in prison and it was shockingly great.

I don't know dick about the law BUT! I have seen a number of police procedural shows, and the lawyer who gets a contempt of court charge typically spends a night in jail. I can totally see Trump scaring up a CoC on purpose here and there, seeing that night in the slam as priceless pr for his sad cause.

LOL, this thread is like 25% trump death fantasies but people get their feathers ruffled when people make fun of his weight. Just don't say he'll die of obesity I guess.

BrianB, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 12:26 (six months ago) link

People get their "feathers ruffled" because there might be people here who have had to deal all their lives with with bullying and self-image issues as a result of their weight and don't in the year 2023 need to be made to feel those issues yet again just to score cheap laughs on our dickhead ex-president.

Death fantasies are less offensive imo because no one here has suffered all their lives from dying, other than the way we all do every day.

Brian the death wishes are expressing extreme dislike of his personality and actions. Mocking his weight implies that being overweight is grounds for mockery. Does that not seem like a very different thing to you?

sb and move on imo, this is neither a serious nor good faith argument

the new drip king (DJP), Wednesday, 4 October 2023 13:44 (six months ago) link

SB away I guess, but I do seriously think it's an odd form of group think morality that relishes death fantasies but shuns weight jokes. I don't have a problem with either, I just was bummed about Josh getting scolded for his footprints in the sand joke, which I thought was funny.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 4 October 2023 16:03 (six months ago) link

brimstead, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 16:07 (six months ago) link

I dunno, body shaming seems like the kind of behavior we rightfully find objectionable in people like Trump. Admittedly, there is much more objectionable behavior, but still.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 4 October 2023 16:16 (six months ago) link

I think it's legit to make fun of Donald Trump for being fat because in addition to being fat, he is extremely vain, and he has a cult of sycophants who generate fan-art of him not being fat, in fact being super-muscular and manly. So a joke about Donald Trump being fat is not a joke about fat people being per se bad; it's a joke about Donald Trump's vanity and the insane flattery of his cult.

But ILX has this really weird, overcompensating hangup that fat jokes are, like, the worst, most evil thing someone could ever post. It's just one of the rules of the road around here, and people should know that by now.

read-only (unperson), Wednesday, 4 October 2023 16:32 (six months ago) link

Wishing Trump dead, even if it had any power, is only proverbially hurting Trump.

Making fat jokes re: Trump is like throwing a grenade onto a crowded sidewalk he's standing on next to 100 innocent people, then asking what's the big idea, the grenade was only intended for him
