"Hannibal Lecter, how great an actor was he?"

I'll admit that, as a person who is opposed to every aspect of his existence, I'm occasionally overly eager to go for the 'what a fucking moron' GOTCHA! at times when the facts perhaps don't necessarily warrant a GOTCHA!, but in this instance, it really does not seem like he's capable of separating the character from the actor who plays the character. I'm genuinely unconvinced that he's aware of the difference.

Curious as to when & why Hopkins said he liked Trump.

No, no, Hannibal Lecter said that.

seems like it was

Mads Mikkelsen said in a 2016 CBS News interview that he had no idea what to think about Donald Trump as he had never met him.

"He’s obviously not the classic politician, that’s for sure. I can definitely laugh at some of the stuff he says but I can also go, 'Oh my God, did he say that?' I think he’s a fresh wind for some people, but that’s what you’re voting for, I guess, right? It’s a big job," he said.

lol, no surprise it wasn't one of the supremo luvvie melts Hopkins or Cox

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Monday, 9 October 2023 23:03 (six months ago) link

The simplest explanation is that Trump forgot Anthony Hopkins' name so he substituted the name of the one role he played that everyone instantly recognizes. Chances are if he'd said "Anthony Hopkins" instead of "Hannibal Lector" fewer people in the audience would have known just who he was talking about anyway.

hat trick of trashiness (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 October 2023 23:48 (six months ago) link

OK. I'm guessing Trump has no idea that there was a Lector-based TV series or that more than one actor ever played the part, so he probably thought all along it was Hopkins who said something nice about him. After all, who has time for all these unimportant details, when the only important or interesting thing was that the guy who played Lector knows how great he (Trump) is. The other details never mattered. Also, Trump forgot Hopkins' name. It didn't matter either.

"The Presidential oath, which the framers of the Fourteenth Amendment surely knew, requires the President to swear to 'preserve, protect and defend' the Constitution — not to 'support' the Constitution," said the filing by Trump's attorneys. "Because the framers chose to define the group of people subject to Section Three by an oath to 'support' the Constitution of the United States, and not by an oath to 'preserve, protect and defend' the Constitution, the framers of the Fourteenth Amendment never intended for it to apply to the President."

Elsewhere, per the NYT, strange things are afoot:

Steven C. Lee, an Illinois pastor charged in the Georgia election interference case against Donald J. Trump and his allies, is hoping to fund his legal defense, at least in part, with sales of “MAGA honey” bottles shaped like the former president.

This is delightful, BTW:

One of Mr. Chesebro’s lawyers, Manubir S. Arora, set up a GiveSendGo page for his client that says Mr. Chesebro is being buried “under a mountain of legal bills.” Mr. Chesebro is shown smiling on a beach, hands outstretched. As of Wednesday afternoon, the campaign had raised $20.

this new line of thinking will take him far:

Speaking in Florida on Wednesday, Trump, the Republican frontrunner to take on Biden next year, called Hezbollah – a Lebanese group also backed by Iran and supportive of Hamas – “very smart” and the Israeli defense minister, Yoav Gallant, “a jerk”.

Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, had been “hurt very badly”, Trump said, adding: “He was not prepared. He was not prepared and Israel was not prepared. And under Trump, they wouldn’t have had to be prepared. You know, Hezbollah is very smart. They’re all very smart.”
