so funny seeing him angrily losing it at the press conference about the Mar-a-Lago valuation "it's probably the most expensive property in the world" "it could be worth billions.."

even funnier considering he's literally on trial for exaggerating the value of his properties

Under a deal announced Thursday in Fulton County Superior Court, she will receive six years probation and pay a $6,000 fine.

I wonder what the terms of the probation are? She seems to have done a better job staying mum than my pillow guy, maybe I'm looking in the wrong places.

I'd presume there might be a domino effect of other rather shook indicted retrobates turning witness now. I heard in RICO cases the ones that get in early get the best deals (free pizzas!), and once this starts there is no stopping it.

No, it's separate. Like Trump, lots of separate lawsuits going on.

right I thought this is why you charge as many people as you can with RICO, if you get a few plea deals it makes it a lot easier to charge the primary conspirators

frogbs, Thursday, 19 October 2023 15:21 (six months ago) link

yeah I think the idea is to get the more minor players to flip upwards against the big dogs of the conspiracy and it seems to be working

so now Powell is obligated to also cooperate with Jack Smith in the classified documents case if he wants to use her.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Thursday, 19 October 2023 15:46 (six months ago) link

Yes to all the above, though it's less the classified docs case -- I don't think she had anything to do with that? -- and more the J6 case in DC.

Per the NYT:

She was also fined $6,000 and agreed to pay $2,700 restitution to the state of Georgia, as well as write an apology letter to its citizens.

Prosecutors said in court that Ms. Powell had given them a recorded statement on Wednesday as part of her plea deal. She has agreed to testify against any of the 17 remaining defendants. Ms. Powell has also agreed to turn over documents in her possession related to the case.

So yeah, Willis would not have agreed to anything in court without that statement already in hand, that's for sure.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 19 October 2023 15:50 (six months ago) link

oh yes the J6 case, such a dizzying array of cases I'm still getting them crossed occasionally!

real warm grandpa (Neanderthal), Thursday, 19 October 2023 17:21 (six months ago) link

Biggest problem with making a plea deal in exchange for her testimony is that she's done so much flagrant lying in front of so many cameras that attacking her credibility will be child's play.

xxp

isn't it more important how it plays to the jury? after all Trump elevated this conspiracy theory minded Qanon extremist into a prominent position in his legal team, so doesn't it sort of enhance the narrative of crackerjack cranks attempting to illegally reverse election results? I don't know tbh. She was present and actively involved in pivotal moments of the conspiracy and oddly I think she could end up being quite a credible witness. Fani Willis seems formidable.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Friday, 20 October 2023 04:46 (six months ago) link

Does this have to be written in the form of an actual letter, like starting with "Dearest Georgians" and ending with "warmest regards" or "yours in service"?

Dearest Georgians,

I apologize that you could not see the things that I saw. I assumed that when I shared the completely obvious evidence of malfeasance with you, that you would react in kind and take back your country. In retrospect, I probably should have expected less from you. After all, you voted for Joe Biden. Or so they tell you.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/judge-threats-imprison-trump-biolat-rcna121403

The judge presiding over Donald Trump’s $250 million civil fraud trial in New York raised the possibility on Friday of putting the former president in prison after Trump failed to comply with a partial gag order requiring him to remove a post trashing the judge's law clerk on social media.

Judge Arthur Engoron said in court on Friday morning that Trump had posted on his social media account "an untrue and disparaging post about my clerk" and that he spoke to the former president about the matter.

"I ordered him to remove the post immediately and he said he did take it down," Engoron said.

It's predictable that he was going push it with the gag order, but attacking the judge's staff again is really pushing it. I suspect he might want do some performative prison time, it will be a great boost for his fundraising.
