Yeah, that literally made me gasp

the new drip king (DJP), Wednesday, 25 October 2023 23:46 (six months ago) link

looked at the wife's twitter and I can't figure out what is going on with those people at all, thankfully I don't have an account any longer and will not be tempted to dig any further.

Am I meant to know or care who that guy is?

BTW - that tweet, here on this thread, is a perfect example of what someone was pointing out on the anti-semitic thread (Felicity I think?) re, lacking context. Its something I've always hated about ILX, but this is the actual Twitter thread so I guess I cant kvetch here.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 26 October 2023 00:44 (six months ago) link

The context is "holy fuck, look at this fucking mutant." It's an example of the kind of brain poisoning that simply didn't exist pre-Twitter: like, aside from your family and maybe your neighbors, who needs to know that you cheated on your wife and are now getting divorced? But apparently he thinks the whole world needs to know, and he thought including both his soon-to-be-ex-wife and his new girlfriend in the tweet was the correct move, from a performance standpoint. It's stunning in its insanity.

And in answer to your question, no, you're not meant to know or care who he is. I certainly had no idea who he was when I saw that tweet and laughed out loud at the sheer "look-at-me"-ism of it.

Yeah fair enough :)

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 26 October 2023 01:01 (six months ago) link

Sorry I realise now it sounded like I was aiming that at you, which I wasnt.

hey congrats to snapchat

lagāˆžn, Thursday, 26 October 2023 02:33 (six months ago) link

Weird, I didnā€™t even know Snapchat was a thing, I thought it was functionally replaced by TikTok.

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 26 October 2023 02:45 (six months ago) link

snapchat is more of a messaging thing it does have social features but i think people use it a lot just between friends, where tikitok is more about watching lil movies strangers put up

lagāˆžn, Thursday, 26 October 2023 02:50 (six months ago) link

weirdest thing to me about that chart of daily users caek linked was that facebook stayed perfectly flat the whole time. not so much as a wiggle, wobble, or hiccup.

I think tweets without context or having to click through to read a thread kind of suck

but that particular one, itā€™s someone summarizing the situation referenced in the screenshot and basically explaining why itā€™s funny? crypto man publicly admitting his affair and divorce

É„ÉÆ ļøµ (Ā°ā–”Ā°) (mh), Thursday, 26 October 2023 12:53 (six months ago) link

Genuinely surprised at TikTok doing so erratically.

deep wubs and tribral rhythms (Boring, Maryland), Thursday, 26 October 2023 12:57 (six months ago) link

^^Bad press and different states banning/limiting use by employees probably contributed, along with other users trying it out and not really succeeding with views and/or getting the hang of posting, so they drop out.

And in answer to your question, no, you're not meant to know or care who he is.

well I wound up looking this guy up and lots of idiots do know who he is, he's some bitcoin/youtuber grifter who had his channel taken away by his business partners. these kinds of businesses are all BS to me but they do have a following amongst choads.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Thursday, 26 October 2023 14:10 (six months ago) link

the problem with Twitter embeds now is that if you are not logged into Twitter and click on it, either you won't see other tweets in the thread or replies, or it will just take you to their main profile page that only loads tweets from like 5 years ago.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 26 October 2023 14:14 (six months ago) link

yea pretty amazing how all these changes have effectively broken the way Twitter displays on outside sites, for example making the default link "x.com" now when most sites just look for the Twitter URL, it's just remarkable how little he thinks about anything

frogbs, Thursday, 26 October 2023 14:19 (six months ago) link

i can understand people thinking hes tanking the site or purpose, i dont think that, but i can understand it

Seeing someone do something badly makes you realise how difficult it is to do something well

I must be the unluckiest man alive (Matt #2), Thursday, 26 October 2023 14:37 (six months ago) link

true but virtually every single decision he's made from the jump has been so obviously stupid that you can't even couch it in terms like "hey, running a website is hard!"

frogbs, Thursday, 26 October 2023 14:58 (six months ago) link

I wasn't excusing this clown! More pointing out that one needs to keep one's ego in check, which is clearly not possible for many people inc. him.

I must be the unluckiest man alive (Matt #2), Thursday, 26 October 2023 15:04 (six months ago) link

nah I get it I mean ol' Musky was in a no-win situation right from the start but yeah between this and the Trump administration we are seeing some very good examples of why the "I alone can fix it!" shit never works because these things are always way more complicated than the public knows. that said virtually every bad thing that's happened to Twitter was predicted the instant Elon took over

frogbs, Thursday, 26 October 2023 15:08 (six months ago) link

Also just the hubris of having your ego stroked for so long that you genuinely believe that you are so smart that you don't need to listen to anyone else, especially not the folks who you can tell are genuinely smarter/more knowledgeable than you.

finally deleted my accounts today (all three of them). I'd only reinstated them initially because it was the only way to read the entirety of embedded twitter threads in here, and then I eventually began just using it to sports shitpost, but holy fuck has even that become toxic.

it's not inherent to Twitter but it kind of explodes there in a way that it wouldn't on FB due to difference in design.

basically a local thing happened last night - Orlando City SC is about to face Nashville SC in a best of 3 playoff series for soccer (ok FOOTBALL). yes, a best of 3 series is beyond stupid but STAY FOCUSED grr.

anyway so Nashville fans began this really aggressive, but initially purely soc...football discussion, and then one of them discovered an OCSC fan's wife had an OnlyFans and dropped that nugget at the right moment in the discussion, at which point several Nashville fans began harassing his wife, and calling him a 'cuck' on Twitter, and accusing him of making death threats, meanwhile the guy in question who started the whole OnlyFans-gate is apparently banned from several events due to making women feel uncomfortable.

like these toxic harassment campaigns just seem to be easier to pull off on Twitter with IRL consequences, and in this case it's just...over a game of footie? so I don't really wanna be part of that anymore.

(that and Elon's anti-semitism!)

Like is there some lame 4chan/Reddit meme behind it?

my feeling is its just a cool letter particularly for a gen x brain, theres more in depth musing on it upthread or maybe in the musk thread, he bought the x.com domain for a million dollars way back in the paypal days and has been sitting on it since is part of it too, he wants to use the domain

lagāˆžn, Thursday, 26 October 2023 17:56 (six months ago) link

dyou think he wanted to call the twitter files the x files and was dissuaded by lawyersā€¦ or just didn't remember he had the domain until it was months too late

*mulder throws me a file*: ever heard of the never-knowingly-funny alien?

Early in the creation of his second start-up, Musk had conviction about its name: X.com. This was, Musk believed, simply ā€œthe coolest URL on the internet.ā€

ā€œHe was really passionately inspired by that letter,ā€ an X.com colleague recalled.

One reason sports Twitter has stayed active through the tumult of the Musk era is that the alternatives that have emerged are less appealing to sports fans. Metaā€™s rival app, Threads, surfaces posts to a userā€™s feed through an algorithm rather than in real time, making live events harder to follow. Bluesky, which was funded by a Twitter founder, Jack Dorsey, does show posts in reverse-chronological order, but the app remains invitation-only and is less active than Twitter

From New York Times article

curmudgeon, Friday, 27 October 2023 14:18 (six months ago) link

the reason bsky doesn't work for sports is it doesn't do video

lagāˆžn, Friday, 27 October 2023 15:02 (six months ago) link

just from my personal observation twitter sports has declined, sometimes i search celtics the day after a game to see what articles thread with clips in them and so forth are in there and theres less than there used to be, tho some of that could be due to changes in the search algo

lagāˆžn, Friday, 27 October 2023 15:04 (six months ago) link

it's still good for sports, though obv as people leave it gets worse and worse. for me MLB twitter is kinda dead, NFL twitter is on life support, but NBA twitter is still good. all depends who you follow I guess.

frogbs, Friday, 27 October 2023 15:08 (six months ago) link

and yeah the algorithm kinda fucks with it now, especially the timeline being constantly broken, but last night it was fine
