true but virtually every single decision he's made from the jump has been so obviously stupid that you can't even couch it in terms like "hey, running a website is hard!"

I wasn't excusing this clown! More pointing out that one needs to keep one's ego in check, which is clearly not possible for many people inc. him.

nah I get it I mean ol' Musky was in a no-win situation right from the start but yeah between this and the Trump administration we are seeing some very good examples of why the "I alone can fix it!" shit never works because these things are always way more complicated than the public knows. that said virtually every bad thing that's happened to Twitter was predicted the instant Elon took over
― frogbs, Thursday, 26 October 2023 15:08 (six months ago) link
Also just the hubris of having your ego stroked for so long that you genuinely believe that you are so smart that you don't need to listen to anyone else, especially not the folks who you can tell are genuinely smarter/more knowledgeable than you.

finally deleted my accounts today (all three of them). I'd only reinstated them initially because it was the only way to read the entirety of embedded twitter threads in here, and then I eventually began just using it to sports shitpost, but holy fuck has even that become toxic.
it's not inherent to Twitter but it kind of explodes there in a way that it wouldn't on FB due to difference in design.
basically a local thing happened last night - Orlando City SC is about to face Nashville SC in a best of 3 playoff series for soccer (ok FOOTBALL). yes, a best of 3 series is beyond stupid but STAY FOCUSED grr.
anyway so Nashville fans began this really aggressive, but initially purely soc...football discussion, and then one of them discovered an OCSC fan's wife had an OnlyFans and dropped that nugget at the right moment in the discussion, at which point several Nashville fans began harassing his wife, and calling him a 'cuck' on Twitter, and accusing him of making death threats, meanwhile the guy in question who started the whole OnlyFans-gate is apparently banned from several events due to making women feel uncomfortable.
like these toxic harassment campaigns just seem to be easier to pull off on Twitter with IRL consequences, and in this case it's just...over a game of footie? so I don't really wanna be part of that anymore.
(that and Elon's anti-semitism!)

my feeling is its just a cool letter particularly for a gen x brain, theres more in depth musing on it upthread or maybe in the musk thread, he bought the x.com domain for a million dollars way back in the paypal days and has been sitting on it since is part of it too, he wants to use the domain

dyou think he wanted to call the twitter files the x files and was dissuaded by lawyers… or just didn't remember he had the domain until it was months too late

Early in the creation of his second start-up, Musk had conviction about its name: X.com. This was, Musk believed, simply “the coolest URL on the internet.”

One reason sports Twitter has stayed active through the tumult of the Musk era is that the alternatives that have emerged are less appealing to sports fans. Meta’s rival app, Threads, surfaces posts to a user’s feed through an algorithm rather than in real time, making live events harder to follow. Bluesky, which was funded by a Twitter founder, Jack Dorsey, does show posts in reverse-chronological order, but the app remains invitation-only and is less active than Twitter

just from my personal observation twitter sports has declined, sometimes i search celtics the day after a game to see what articles thread with clips in them and so forth are in there and theres less than there used to be, tho some of that could be due to changes in the search algo
― lag∞n, Friday, 27 October 2023 15:04 (six months ago) link
it's still good for sports, though obv as people leave it gets worse and worse. for me MLB twitter is kinda dead, NFL twitter is on life support, but NBA twitter is still good. all depends who you follow I guess.
― frogbs, Friday, 27 October 2023 15:08 (six months ago) link
and yeah the algorithm kinda fucks with it now, especially the timeline being constantly broken, but last night it was fine

assuming that data is still stored somewhere behind the scenes regardless of it being 'deleted' (I work in software and we never actually 'delete' anything), maybe they're worried the FBI is going to be interested in that data and it'll make Elon's Nazi shit look bad

fyi for those interested and who isnt in epoch time often when you see a date displayed on a website/computer/whatever device its getting it by subscribing to a service that tells it how many milliseconds have elapsed since new years 1970 then the computer does a calculation to convert that into a human readable time format, so when you see that new years eve 1969 date it means the process is failing
