while ago i was curious what the fake egirl followers were about so id add them to a list when they followed me and occasionally check in but they never did anything, they were all the same theyd post a few photos follow a bunch of people then go dormant and eventually get banned, idk what the deal was possible whoever was doing it was aging the accounts cause maybe the platform considers them more legit if theyre on there for longer and i just didnt follow them for long enough but they mostly seemed get banned in big purges so its a mystery, guess they couldve been dming the the people who followed them back trying to scam them

I can't with all these libs mourning the Lost Golden Age of Twitter gtfo it was always a shithole

As someone who has a broad experience with literal shitholes located beneath genuine shithouses I can attest that some shitholes are far more disgusting than others. just sayin'

I don't really use Twitter much anymore but when I do hop on I always see something like this:
Cannabis is a silent epidemic wreaking havoc on the American family.A friend brought some of these over and I drank two around 8pm.My body completely shut down and I slept from 9pm until 10am. I slept through Sunday Mass. How is this legal, with such innocent packaging? pic.twitter.com/8ziBXSmfYt— Justin Murphy (cath/acc) (@jmrphy) February 4, 2024
look, ten years ago I would've instantly diagnosed this as a troll, but nowadays it's kind of hard to tell because right wing influencers really are that clueless sometimes. of course it absolutely is, because this drink has no THC in it, plus that "I missed Sunday Mass" bit is a bit too on the nose. but it makes me wonder why things are this way now - are the Charlie Kirks, Candice Owens, Jordan Petersons, Ben Shapiros, etc etc really that stupid, or do they pretend to be? does it really matter? the point is that we're past the point of outrage bait now and now firmly in an era where you drive engagement simply by posting the dumbest, most braindead shit possible. and this has seeped into every faction of Twitter too, like NBA Twitter is full of fake quotes and idiotic comparisons, where you're not actually trying to say anything but rather get people responding to your posts so it reaches as many people as possible. I guess all forms of social media have this problem, but Twitter now is actively incentivizing this, which is why things got notably worse the instant Elon started offering to pay people who got a lot of engagement. and now everyone's a Krassenstein brother. even the people I follow who I still *like* - the ones I'll actually open Twitter for - cannot help but respond to this shit.

What people see on Twitter is still made up of what people say on Twitter.
Which raises the question: if a tweet drops in the forest of promoted blue checks and ad inserts so that no one sees it, does it still make a sound?
― more difficult than I look (Aimless), Tuesday, 6 February 2024 19:57 (three months ago) link
I am generally sympathetic to his political views, but I think he is largely motivated by a belief that posting is Important because it shapes the discourse ("proud member of Do Something Twitter"), which can lead him to act hysterical at times because he's convinced himself that what he's doing is very high stakes. I think I followed him for a time but stopped because I just found him kind of annoying -- and he would end up in my feed pretty regularly anyway.
― jaymc, Tuesday, 6 February 2024 19:59 (three months ago) link
problem with Stancil's argument is the higher the ratio of Nazis/bots/crypto scammers Twitter has the less culturally relevant it'll be

its sad they missed the blogging to legitimacy pipeline, now whats left some sort of smoldering wasteland, a single voice crying over the horizon "chappo trap house needs to vote"
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 February 2024 20:13 (three months ago) link
I'm not really on Twitter much anymore, so maybe he's changed, but I don't really consider Stancil a centrist. I think of him as a standard liberal wonk who's frequently frustrated with the Democratic Party -- but not because it's too far left but because it's sclerotic and out of touch with the modern information environment. (Brian Beutler is another guy in that lane.)

WS is apparently relatively effective in his day job but is channeling hard GWB-era blogger vibes in a space that is 1. not a blog 2. exists in 2024, not 2004
it was kind of funny when people from his state were asking him wtf he was doing and he was replying with "I don't know who you are" to people who were like "we have talked in person and we have been to the same events"

suspect that even most of the highly engaged in the is voting important argument people from the its not that important leftist side are in fact voters, and theyre mostly just reacting to very annoying dense people like will stancil

I wanted to make a comment about how performative and ineffective it is to just keep re-posting stuff over and over but I wisely stayed out of it

the non voting conversation is entirely a will stancil et al project, socialists arent going around telling each other not to vote, but they might say something like that to will stancil because hes annoying and has made them the object of his weird ineffectual obsession

idk the only socialists I've heard/seen telling people that they're not voting in the US presidential election (which is still a long ways off and who knows what they'll think by then) are people in states that would have solid democratic leads anyway
there have been some well-meaning if kind of token vote municipal/state socialist candidates where I think it's an interesting exercise to push the discourse if you're able to bring issues to debates and coverage of the race, but I don't know if that's been that effective, either. the local mayoral election (nonpartisan position, someone who is ostensibly a democrat will will) ended up having a socialist-type candidate who, if anything, was a spoiler for the more left-leaning of big two candidates
there was also some guy who wanted to be the less-interesting Vermin Supreme-type guy of the midwest who somehow got some votes but we don't need to care much about that
