no judgement intended, just people are endlessly fascinating and did not realise this was such a widespread thing, I cannot imagine caring about it personally but sure there are many things I do which would be equally strange or stranger

When I had the TV on all day in my former apartment, 10 seemed like the most comfortable volume level. Not 10 out of 10 like a guitar amp, to be clear — 10 out of probably 60 or more; I never got the TV up to full volume.

given things like volume/microwave times/etc. i will absolutely go very slightly out of my way to make them odd-numbered

because odd numbers are better. particularly fond of 17 x 3 = 51

I'm with lagoon. I wouldn't have a clue what actual number the TV/music volume is set to, it'll just be at whatever volume is appropriate for the circumstances

Absolutely shook tonight when sitting down to watch a show with my daughter, she asked me to turn the volume up and then said "You can't leave it on 17 dad, can you change it to 16 or 18"

I am normally ignorant of the numbers, but I claim a parental exception, where I put a limit on volume for my kids Bluetoothed bullshit on my cars stereo, and i say you may not go above 12 or suffer death or other worst consequences

even volume numbers really cancel out that odd harmonic distortion of the audio, really gives it the breath of life

I just have a little bar that shows up on my tv and most things these days. I try to make sure it’s not too full because that means it could hurt my ears

sigh. as a malaysian, americans can have ian miles cheong as far as I care. i swear y'all are obsessed with him. like I got on bluesky and 99% of malaysia content on there was about this fucking guy and none by Malaysians

there's something vaguely condescending about the wave of americans posting about him doing crimes in Malaysia, as if those tweets were enough to get him arrested/investigated. malaysians are online. malaysian police are VERY online. maybe the vast majority of malaysians didn't know who he was before this week, but i can guarantee he was already on cops' radar long before that. 

idk man, when I read one of those tweets, my reaction is less lol and more like "oh ok, so you guys think we're all so backwards and dumb that we'll arrest him just because YOU said he's a drug dealer"

yeah, the jokes are a little obsessive. I get the impression that it’s turned from “imply he did illegal stuff to genuinely get him in trouble” to jokes about that impulse to do that, though? twitter’s full of self-styled comedians who all think they get a crack at every opportunity

he truly is an extremely visible presence for reasons no one can really explain other than he’s extremely online. I would expect no one in malaysia knows him since he doesn’t go outside!

yeah until this week he had little to no presence on Malaysian social media. like my sister works in tech and she'd never heard of him.

the jokes about him potentially getting arrested were funny at first but got old really quickly, esp because I know that if/when it actually happens, there's gonna be a lot of sanctimonious bs along the lines of "even though we don't like him, we shouldn't be celebrating people being arrested for sedition, malaysian laws are draconian blah blah". stfu we know

there would def be some annoying scolding but i dont it wouldnt be from the people joking about him getting arrested now

btw one thing i noticed re the decline in twitters infrastructure is before musk took over the trending topics turned over pretty quick they tried to keep them fresh things would only trend for a few hours, but he was trending for 2+ days

you can principally be against sedition laws prohibiting political speech and also think it's funny if ian miles cheong got in trouble because of them. if it were up to me laws like that wouldn't exist but it's not hypocritical to feel schadenfreude that he got fined or whatever
