I don't really get why this is a crime, they are both on the same side and it doesn't seem they did anything sketchy? just kinda looks bad

frogbs, Thursday, 15 February 2024 15:25 (two months ago) link

Meanwhile, the Stormy Daniels criminal trial is going to proceed on March 25

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Thursday, 15 February 2024 15:25 (two months ago) link

xp

yeah, it's not really clear, but I guess we'll see what happens in this hearing. I don't think disqualification is dependent on there being a crime though.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Thursday, 15 February 2024 15:26 (two months ago) link

If the GA case gets buried, that kinda becomes a pretty easy rallying point for '24 there, no?

Rich E. (Eric H.), Thursday, 15 February 2024 15:27 (two months ago) link

But anyway, sorry, even if the prosecutor is a reckless and/or bad person, you are still not supposed to do crimes. Usually you are still in trouble.

Would love to hear more about these crimes you think the prosecutor did

It's cool, waterfall, that was ambiguously worded. I just meant that Trump should still be held accountable even if Willis acted improperly. Which I don't think, but in any case, it's irrelevant to what Trump did/didn't do.

fleetwood macrame (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 15 February 2024 16:08 (two months ago) link

Noted somewhere else, but profoundly sad and ironic that Trump is literally a convicted sex offender and is not disqualified from running for president, but this DA had a consensual affair with a co-worker and suddenly her own qualifications are in question. (The money stuff is a different issue, I suppose.)

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 15 February 2024 16:16 (two months ago) link

Not a convicted sex offender (unfortunately). He was found liable in a civil trial (which was for defamation iirc).

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Thursday, 15 February 2024 16:19 (two months ago) link

he was found liable for the assault as well in the previous trial, but you're right that doesn't make him 'convicted' since not a criminal trial

CEO Greedwagon (Neanderthal), Thursday, 15 February 2024 16:19 (two months ago) link

here's what I've been able to get from the GA hearing so far:

A former friend of Fani Willis established at the beginning of the hearing that the relationship between Willis and Wade dated back to 2019, which is presumably earlier than was indicated in their statements. This lead to the denial of Nathan Wade's request to quash his subpoena, and he took the witness stand.

From what I can tell, Roman's lawyer has attempted to go after Wade in a couple of ways, neither of which seemed incredibly successful so far.

1. Perjury regarding his relationship with Willis. They appear to be trying to catch Wade in a lie regarding his statements about a relationship with Willis in his divorce proceedings and in his response to motion to disqualify. The problem they are running into with this is that Wade is making a somewhat fine grained distinction between whether he had an affair and whether he had a relationship. From his perspective, everything that happened with Willis is above board because his marriage was effectively over in 2015, which is when they agreed to get divorced, even though the actual divorce didn't happen until much later.

2. Paying for travel and gifts for Willis, potentially with tax payer dollars. This comes from the fact that Wade booked travel and charged other vacation expenses with Wade to his company credit card. However, as Wade explained, he always booked thing to his card because Willis did not like to book travel. She's a very public figure and did not want people following her around. What's not indicated in his credit card transactions is that she was also very meticulous about paying him back for everything in cash. She was very adamant about paying her own way to such a degree that it was apparently a point of contention between her and Wade.

Wade was mostly patient and tried to be helpful answering questions, though in a very lawyerly way. Willis, on the other hand, is clearly extremely pissed off and ready to tell Roman's attorney to her face that she's a liar.

Willis attacked defense attorney Ashleigh Merchant as she began to question Willis during the hearing, saying that questions she was asking were based on lies.

“It’s ridiculous that you lied on Monday and yet here we still are,” Willis said of a hearing earlier this week on efforts by Willis to stop Thursday’s hearing from occurring.

The security presence in Judge Scott McAfee’s courtroom increased significantly once Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis unexpectedly took the stand.

During the hours of previous witness testimony on Thursday, only two or three sheriffs deputy’s were present in the room.

At least eight now are visible during Willis’ ongoing testimony.

Fani Willis fans might reasonably be called...

I’m at about 70% that she’ll be removed from the case

Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Friday, 16 February 2024 00:45 (two months ago) link

I'm more like 50%. It doesn't seem like anything truly unethical happened, so it comes down to how annoyed the judge is at this whole spectacle. Does he think this has caused so much disruption to the case that it can't be fixed?

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Friday, 16 February 2024 01:05 (two months ago) link

thing is, a jury don't decide whether she's removed or not, it's the judge and his mood, so putting a number on it will be impossible, unless you have recent case history to draw on.

CEO Greedwagon (Neanderthal), Friday, 16 February 2024 01:08 (two months ago) link

They had a witness today who claimed that Willis was lying about when the relationship started, and Wade had to revise his previous statements.

I watched a bit of her testimony with closed caption on and did not think she did herself any favors.

Arguing with the questioner is not a great approach for a witness.

Depends on the context and the witness.

I don't think it was great that the judge had to reprimand her a couple times, but the whole scene got pretty messy for a while, and you can't really blame her for being so angry about it all.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Friday, 16 February 2024 03:28 (two months ago) link

but you can blame her for acting angry about it. operating at a v high level in a courtroom environment is like, actually her job. if that what she thinks will be most effective wrt to both exculpating herself and also staying on the matter, that's her judgment, i should hope-- not mere reaction. i think that's poor judgment, but not as poor judgment as what got us to this.
