In 1990, at the age of 38, Kramer co-founded Total Multimedia Inc. with Randy Jackson (brother of Michael Jackson) to develop data compression techniques for CD-ROMs.[5][6] The firm claims it developed the first video compression capable of producing full motion video from a single speed CD-ROM in 1992. In 1994 the company was reorganized under bankruptcy and hired new leadership. Kramer continued working there until his disappearance, though he was profoundly affected by the bankruptcy and reorganization.[4][6] Kramer co-developed SoftVideo based on fractal compression and he also claimed to work on a transmission project that would result in faster-than-light speed communications. The latter related to his father Ray's long-running family effort to discredit Albert Einstein's theories.[6]

In July 2021, Habba represented Siggy Flicker, a former member of The Real Housewives of New Jersey who alleged that Facebook had disabled her account for wishing Melania Trump a happy birthday.[18][22][23] Habba wrote a letter to Facebook, which Facebook appeared to ignore.[24]

Baseball bats are often used as weapons by civilians,[29] criminals, protesters,[30] and mobsters.[31] Factors that made the baseball bat a popular weapon include:

  • -* Price; Baseball bats are cheaper to buy and easier to maintain than firearms or bladed weapons.
  • -* Legality; Unlike firearms, bladed weapons, pepper spray, or stun guns, baseball bats are not considered a weapon by many jurisdictions due to being sporting equipment. However, some jurisdictions may ban carrying sporting equipment in public without good reason.[32]
  • -* Ease of access; Baseball bats are freely available in stores such as sporting goods stores. They don't require a background check, license, or permit.[33]
  • -* Ease of use; Baseball bats (like many other bludgeon weapons) only require the user to swing at the target in order for it to be effective.
  • -* Diversity; Baseball bats come in various sizes from T-ball bats to full size bats. They can cater to the users strength, size, and available storage places.

ok this is clearly not written from a NPOV. you can't fuckin' _conceal_ a baseball bat. what, they think i can just walk around the streets carrying around a big fuckin' bat like i'm fuckin' harley quinn or something? what am i supposed to do, strap one to my leg and just accuse them of being transphobic if they make a big deal out of it? (note to cis people - do not try to make that joke yourself.)

How on earth did that family not get mauled to death?

Zelda Zonk, Friday, 23 February 2024 06:22 (two months ago) link

There were 48 cast and crew injured in the first two years of production, with another 20-50 (estimates vary) in subsequent years.

Of the family members, per wikip,

Noel Marshall was bitten through the hand when he interacted with male lions during a fight scene; doctors initially feared that he might lose his arm… By the time he suffered eight puncture wounds on his leg caused by a lion which was curious about his anti-reflection makeup, Marshall had already been bitten around eleven times. He was hospitalized when his face and chest were injured and was diagnosed with blood poisoning. Marshall was also diagnosed with gangrene after being attacked many times. It took several years to fully recover from his injuries.

During a promo shoot in 1973, Hedren was bitten in the head by a lion, Cherries, whose teeth scraped against her skull. She was taken to Sherman Oaks Hospital, where her wounds were treated and she was given a tetanus shot. She was admitted to Antelope Valley Hospital after Tembo, the five-ton elephant, picked her up with his trunk by the ankle, fracturing it before bucking her off his back… She was left with phlebitis and gangrene, in addition to a fractured hand and abrasions on her leg. …Hedren was also scratched on the arm by a leopard and bitten on the chest by a cougar.

Griffith received 50 sutures after being attacked by a lioness. It was feared that she would lose an eye, but she eventually recovered without being disfigured, although she did require some facial reconstruction.

A lion jumped on John Marshall and bit the back of his head, inflicting a wound that required 56 sutures.

Jerry Marshall was bitten in the thigh by a lion while he was in a cage on set, and he was in hospital alongside Hedren for a month

The story about Roar is just one of the craziest things. I think about it quite often tbh.

Baseball bats are often used as weapons by civilians,[29] criminals, protesters,[30] and mobsters.[31]

My soon to be 80 year old dad keeps a bat in the trunk of his car but as far as I know has never actually used it as a weapon.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 23 February 2024 12:40 (two months ago) link

The production notes on the Roar Wikipedia page are an eye opener. The 70s was a foreign country, they did things differently there.

Zelda Zonk, Friday, 23 February 2024 13:04 (two months ago) link

Mentioned this before, but both Tippi Hedren and Jayne Mansfield had kids who were mauled by lions

Josefa, Friday, 23 February 2024 13:30 (two months ago) link

Roar is a fascinating watch but very uncomfortable, really more for the unconsidered treatment of the animals than of the people (tho both are alarming). Jan de Bont also among the near-mortally wounded iirc.

Thank you ILX for the Roar pointer…underrated part imo:

The script developed with frequent changes but always allowing for inclusion of spontaneous actions by the animals, such as playing with the family's boat or riding a skateboard. This led some of the lions to be credited as writers.[3][32]

While performing a conjuring trick for the amusement of his children in 1843 Brunel accidentally inhaled a half-sovereign coin, which became lodged in his windpipe. A special pair of forceps failed to remove it, as did a machine devised by Brunel to shake it loose. At the suggestion of his father, Brunel was strapped to a board and turned upside-down, and the coin was jerked free.

In 1816, a tooth said to have belonged to Newton was sold for £730[164] in London to an aristocrat who had it set in a ring.[165] Guinness World Records 2002 classified it as the most valuable tooth in the world, which would value approximately £25,000 (US$35,700) in late 2001.[165] Who bought it and who currently has it has not been disclosed.

Somehow I never heard this bit of trivia (from the Bearsville Studios wiki entry)

In 1988, The Replacements had a 10-day recording session at Bearsville during which they trashed the recording studio and living quarters and played a game they called "dodge knife" that was like dodgeball but using knives.

In August 1969, a collection of poems penned by the seven members of the Association was released as the book Crank Your Spreaders.

i didn't know much about them, honestly - just like a couple of their songs. i knew tandyn almer and curt boettcher were involved, i knew about "along comes mary" and "cherish" and "never my love" and "requiem for the masses". but i didn't know about terry kirkman at all. like, he met frank zappa when he was going to community college in cucamonga and they played coffeehouses together between '59 and '61. the whole la music scene is just wild that way.
