The only good joke I recall from last night was Jost remarking that after the Supreme Court of Alabama ruled that frozen embryos were children they ruled that Black embryos could be tried as adults.

I personally found Gillis funny and he was really good in the sketches. the over the top reactions both pro and con on social media are illustrative of how fucking stupid social media is.

I love how people only realize now that this show is reactionary bullshit

Gillis is a puddle of unfunny

its sad that dummy had to follow someone as awesome as ayo on snl as host. she's a totally funny stand-up comedian! he's a mid dud. at least HE thinks he's hilarious though.

scott seward, Monday, 26 February 2024 03:55 (two months ago) link

or WAS a totally funny stand-up comedian. before she took over the world. my world...hey i'm only human...so cute. and so talented. sheesh.

scott seward, Monday, 26 February 2024 03:56 (two months ago) link

His stand up specials are hilarious. Gilly and Keeves and Tires are great showcases for his sketch talents.
SNL was predictably a misfire.
That said, I hope to never meet a fan of his in real life.
Is he considered dirtbag left?

ha ha no

a friend of mine wanted to watch a Shane Gillis standup special a few months ago with me so I did and yeah he's pretty funny, much much less like Jim Breuer than I was expecting him to be. doesn't really come off like a right-wing blowhard at all, a bunch of his material was about FOX News and imagining Trump getting assassinated

a lot of his fans seem like genuinely awful people though

frogbs, Monday, 26 February 2024 14:58 (two months ago) link

they like him because they think he was 'cancelled' hence he wound up guesting on Rogan. he doesn't strike me as remotely right-wing or even half as objectionable as Chapelle. There are people on instagram and twitter saying things like "poor bowen yang being forced to be in the same room as him" is if bowen yang is not an adult who is being paid to do a job (and also has enough clout and star power to decide not to do this week if he didn't want to)

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Monday, 26 February 2024 15:05 (two months ago) link

yeah, Yang and Gillis hugged and looked friendly during goodbyes, so there's probably not bad blood between them.

Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Monday, 26 February 2024 15:10 (two months ago) link

i could be wrong, but i don't think alt-rightish internet people that stir shit over Gillis' SNL appearance are even really fans, just a brigade of freaks that form an anti-woke mob over any incident of 'cancellation' until there is another one to congregate around

no you don't understand, Yang is a baby but also mother and also needs to be protected at all costs and we don't deserve Yang

The mother, the son, the unholy host

No way man--these folks love to kick back and watch a Shanne Gillis special while playing Roisin Murphy in the background.

Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Monday, 26 February 2024 15:41 (two months ago) link

Yang started out in his 1st season of SNL kinda one-note in sketches, but lately he's just gone from strength to strength and is the most consistently capable member of the cast.

He and Ego Nwodim are consistently my favorites, but I really like this cast almost across the board

Otm. The Trump assassination bit is pretty classic.

instagram social media response to last night's episode predictably unhinged. either a) sydney sweeney is exploiting her boobs to make up for lack of talent b) sydney sweeney is being exploited by the show because of her boobs c) sydney sweeney is a non-famous person who no one has ever heard of

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Sunday, 3 March 2024 23:31 (one month ago) link

i thought it was fine, as usually. kasey musgraves songs were great.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Sunday, 3 March 2024 23:33 (one month ago) link

Oh yes, a non-famous person who's starred in both this year's biggest sleeper hit and also this year's biggest bomb so far (the lead actress of which having hosted herself a month ago).

sweeney's delivery of her opening opening monologue was very bad, but her work in the skits was up to scratch. my wife walked into the room as she started her monologue and her immediate remark was "she has very nice breasts" in the same tone in which she might have said, "I like her dress."

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Monday, 4 March 2024 00:26 (one month ago) link

Surely everyone knows her from that Rolling Stones video

President Keyes, Monday, 4 March 2024 00:54 (one month ago) link

I bet the Stones don't even know her from that.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 4 March 2024 00:59 (one month ago) link

I dunno -- Mick's list of prospective Blonde Arm Candy runs pretty deep...

It could b yall old

What I knew about her going in is that she’s from Spokane and has famous boobs. That is what I still know. Dire episode.

She played a character based on the Red Scare podcasters in that HBO show about rich morons on vacation. An old person wouldn’t know that right?

President Keyes, Monday, 4 March 2024 11:46 (one month ago) link

But it wasn’t the HBO show about rich morons that actually featured one of the Red Scare podcasters

President Keyes, Monday, 4 March 2024 11:49 (one month ago) link

celebrity is weird now. sweeney starred in a wide release romantic comedy, is in the new marvel movie, was in two critically lauded hbo shows, and a screenshot of her smiling charmingly while being interviewed on “hot wings” recently went viral on twitter. but the modal reaction to her hosting snl is “who is this person?”

flopson, Monday, 4 March 2024 12:29 (one month ago) link

Yeah, I feel like most people didn’t know who Aubrey Plaza was until a year or so ago.

President Keyes, Monday, 4 March 2024 12:37 (one month ago) link

Celebrity is super weird

(All I know about her is that she’s apparently done some things of note and is becoming famous)

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 4 March 2024 12:39 (one month ago) link

People probably don’t want to admit that they mostly know of her from Euphoria clips on porn sites

President Keyes, Monday, 4 March 2024 12:43 (one month ago) link

Part of the problem with celebrity now is that there are too many things to be famous for, and part of it is that, particularly if you’re over a certain age, it’s hard to understand why someone is famous

I’m 47 and can totally understand why, say, Timmy C and Zendaya are celebrities - they’ve been around at a high level for a while and have starred in big mainstream things I’ve seen (even if I haven’t seen all the big things yet)

Which isn’t to say that Sweeney doesn’t deserve to be a star - she’s just… new

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 4 March 2024 12:44 (one month ago) link

If you posted a photo of Sweeney on FB right now with no caption I’m not sure I’d realize who it was

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 4 March 2024 12:45 (one month ago) link

Part of the problem with celebrity now is that there are too many things to be famous for, and part of it is that, particularly if you’re over a certain age, it’s hard to understand why someone is famous

but what i was trying to get at is that she’s famous through very conventional channels (popular big budget wide-release movies and prestige tv series). what’s weird about celebrity now is that neither of those things make you a known quantity to the median snl watcher anymore

flopson, Monday, 4 March 2024 12:56 (one month ago) link

This is nit picking for sure but she is a part of the ensemble on those prestige shows, not the main face like Zendaya. Also isn’t Madame Web the only big budget movie she’s been in? Again, not the star, and it tanked. I guess she was in a 25 million dollar romantic comedy that became a hit, but I’d never heard of it until today.

Her celebrity feels a bit like early Lindsey Lohan’s sans Mean Girls.

President Keyes, Monday, 4 March 2024 13:03 (one month ago) link

I always get her confused with Shawnee Smith.

Sydney Sweeney, I never saw season 1 of "White Lotus" and don't really know wtf "Euphoria" is/was (though the kids loved it, iirc, as peak transgressive teen fare), but those were her two big credits, right? She was a big-enough name, at least at the time, to go viral for ... having a birthday party with Trumpy relatives or something? And she was in that rom-com that people mocked this past ... I don't even know when it was out. Days ago? Weeks ago? Months ago? I'll be honest, her co-star in that (who I guess kept popping up on SNL), I don't know where the fuck he came from, either. He was barely clothed for most of the trailer for that movie and he looked like he was grown in a lab. Now he seems to be everywhere, too, but I looked at his credits and aside from being in "Top Gun 2" (I assume often shirtless there, too) I don't know anything else he's done, either.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 4 March 2024 13:10 (one month ago) link

President Keyes, I assume you are joking about Aubrey Plaza, right?

alpaca lips now (Ye Mad Puffin), Monday, 4 March 2024 13:11 (one month ago) link

No. She was known to Parks and Rec viewers and comedy people but she didn’t get to do things like host SNL until after White Lotus.

President Keyes, Monday, 4 March 2024 13:18 (one month ago) link

It's kind of amazing Aubrey Plaza wasn't on SNL until last year. I just looked and Nick Offerman has never done SNL. Neither has Chris Pratt. Aziz did it back in 2017, apparently. I almost googled to see if Amy Poehler ever hosted.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 4 March 2024 13:29 (one month ago) link

I never watched Parks & Rec, but the internet apparently thinks I need to see a thousand clips of her being weird on Conan O'Brien's show. She is delightfully weird. I don't know if she is a good actor or whatever, but when she given the opportunity to just be bonkers, it is quite something

alpaca lips now (Ye Mad Puffin), Monday, 4 March 2024 13:39 (one month ago) link

She's pretty good in White Lotus 2, in a more serious role. She was also one of the better/funnier Hot Ones guests, iirc.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 4 March 2024 13:42 (one month ago) link

Aubrey Plaza didn't become a really big star until these last few years, but those of us who were onboard with Parks & Rec. from day 1 were all like "finally..."

In some ways she was like '90s Parker Posey, like "Indie Famous" or something...

It's like the discussion about Jean Smart over on the streaming thread: She was always awesome, but it took a long time for a lot of people to realize it.

I wonder what the Venn diagram on people who didn't know who Sweeney was prior to Saturday, but did know who the ding dong from the prior week was. I had to Google him after the announcement to figure out why it was controversial, and afterwards "Oh yeah, that idiot..."

They had another Euphoria actor host earlier this season. One even more obscure than Sweeney imo.
