No way man--these folks love to kick back and watch a Shanne Gillis special while playing Roisin Murphy in the background.

Yang started out in his 1st season of SNL kinda one-note in sketches, but lately he's just gone from strength to strength and is the most consistently capable member of the cast.

He and Ego Nwodim are consistently my favorites, but I really like this cast almost across the board

doesn't really come off like a right-wing blowhard at all, a bunch of his material was about FOX News and imagining Trump getting assassinated

a lot of his fans seem like genuinely awful people though

Oh yes, a non-famous person who's starred in both this year's biggest sleeper hit and also this year's biggest bomb so far (the lead actress of which having hosted herself a month ago).

sweeney's delivery of her opening opening monologue was very bad, but her work in the skits was up to scratch. my wife walked into the room as she started her monologue and her immediate remark was "she has very nice breasts" in the same tone in which she might have said, "I like her dress."

What I knew about her going in is that she’s from Spokane and has famous boobs. That is what I still know. Dire episode.

celebrity is weird now. sweeney starred in a wide release romantic comedy, is in the new marvel movie, was in two critically lauded hbo shows, and a screenshot of her smiling charmingly while being interviewed on “hot wings” recently went viral on twitter. but the modal reaction to her hosting snl is “who is this person?”

Yeah, I feel like most people didn’t know who Aubrey Plaza was until a year or so ago.

Part of the problem with celebrity now is that there are too many things to be famous for, and part of it is that, particularly if you’re over a certain age, it’s hard to understand why someone is famous

I’m 47 and can totally understand why, say, Timmy C and Zendaya are celebrities - they’ve been around at a high level for a while and have starred in big mainstream things I’ve seen (even if I haven’t seen all the big things yet)

Which isn’t to say that Sweeney doesn’t deserve to be a star - she’s just… new

but what i was trying to get at is that she’s famous through very conventional channels (popular big budget wide-release movies and prestige tv series). what’s weird about celebrity now is that neither of those things make you a known quantity to the median snl watcher anymore

This is nit picking for sure but she is a part of the ensemble on those prestige shows, not the main face like Zendaya. Also isn’t Madame Web the only big budget movie she’s been in? Again, not the star, and it tanked. I guess she was in a 25 million dollar romantic comedy that became a hit, but I’d never heard of it until today.

Her celebrity feels a bit like early Lindsey Lohan’s sans Mean Girls.

I always get her confused with Shawnee Smith.

Sydney Sweeney, I never saw season 1 of "White Lotus" and don't really know wtf "Euphoria" is/was (though the kids loved it, iirc, as peak transgressive teen fare), but those were her two big credits, right? She was a big-enough name, at least at the time, to go viral for ... having a birthday party with Trumpy relatives or something? And she was in that rom-com that people mocked this past ... I don't even know when it was out. Days ago? Weeks ago? Months ago? I'll be honest, her co-star in that (who I guess kept popping up on SNL), I don't know where the fuck he came from, either. He was barely clothed for most of the trailer for that movie and he looked like he was grown in a lab. Now he seems to be everywhere, too, but I looked at his credits and aside from being in "Top Gun 2" (I assume often shirtless there, too) I don't know anything else he's done, either.

No. She was known to Parks and Rec viewers and comedy people but she didn’t get to do things like host SNL until after White Lotus.

It's kind of amazing Aubrey Plaza wasn't on SNL until last year. I just looked and Nick Offerman has never done SNL. Neither has Chris Pratt. Aziz did it back in 2017, apparently. I almost googled to see if Amy Poehler ever hosted.

I never watched Parks & Rec, but the internet apparently thinks I need to see a thousand clips of her being weird on Conan O'Brien's show. She is delightfully weird. I don't know if she is a good actor or whatever, but when she given the opportunity to just be bonkers, it is quite something

She's pretty good in White Lotus 2, in a more serious role. She was also one of the better/funnier Hot Ones guests, iirc.

Aubrey Plaza didn't become a really big star until these last few years, but those of us who were onboard with Parks & Rec. from day 1 were all like "finally..."

In some ways she was like '90s Parker Posey, like "Indie Famous" or something...

I'm visiting my 74-year-old mom right now, and yesterday there was a segment about Sydney Sweeney on CBS Sunday Morning, which she watches religiously. My mom said she knew her from The White Lotus, and then remembered she'd also seen her in Reality (the Reality Winner movie on HBO). (She has not seen Euphoria.) Just now, I asked her if she would've recognized the name Sydney Sweeney without seeing her, and she said yes. But she admitted that she is more up on TV/movie celebrities than many people her age. She then told me about how she was in Europe a few years ago and saw Zendaya's face everywhere in some advertising campaign, and she recognized her despite not having seen anything she'd been in.

i've always liked her but i do think she's better now and finally getting really choice roles that she didn't get years ago.

also: snl has always had non-famous hosts? like their host from a week ago. who if you didn't follow standup you would never know. or even beloved ayo. if they didn't watch The Bear most people would never know who she was.

they have always had zeitgeist-y stars of one movie or show as host. for the corporate synergy. and lorne pockets the check from a studio and buys another island.

Shane Gillis is a pretty famous standup, he's coming to Green Bay and the people I know who are going paid an unreal amount for tickets

A funny thing about the Sweeney thing is that when Dakota Johnson hosted in January, she brought up the impending release of Madame Web in her monologue by describing it as "a Marvel movie with me and Sidney Sweeney: it's like A.I. made your boyfriend's favorite film!"

I've always liked the fact that SNL has zeigeisty stars-of-one-movie-or-show as hosts. Even if its just for corporate synergy, its a more interesting way to run a variety show than just having the hosts always be the 12 Officially Most Famous people that year. Watching old epsiodes, I'm always way more interested when the host is some dimly-remembered face of the moment rather than an A-lister.

I remember first seeing her in Everything Sucks, that sort of Freaks and Geeks update set in the '90s that only lasted one season on Netflix, then she popped later that year on Handmaid's Tale. Didn't really notice here again until White Lotus, but I guess Euphoria really blew her up. Looking at her wiki page now, she's been in a ton of movies!

She's plenty famous enough for SNL and an obvious up and coming starlet.
