xp what a surprise

Gift link -- a solid enough summary of Trump's facing something he's never wanted to do: actually disclosing what he's worth.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 1 March 2024 17:35 (two months ago) link

Relatedly, this filing from E. Jean Carroll's lawyer Roberta Kaplan yesterday is worth a read for the first two paragraphs alone.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 1 March 2024 17:36 (two months ago) link

this is praxis

This is exactly what he should be doing:

I'm the only one who has ever beat him. And I'll beat him again.

And again. And again.

Sounds kinda kinky.

getting "loser" to stick seems possible (he won't be able to resist helping) and effective.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 5 March 2024 18:09 (one month ago) link

he starting to do the late-era Lenny Bruce thing

“Some people call it an experiment – I don’t call it an experiment,” Trump said of the United States. “I just say this is a magnificent place, a magnificent country, and it’s sad to see how far it’s come and gone … When you look at the depths where it’s gone, we can’t let that happen. We’re going to straighten it out. We’re going to close our borders. We’re going to drill baby drill.”

As the unhappy warrior spoke, 10 guests headed for the exit, apparently worn down by the misery of it all.

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 6 March 2024 18:04 (one month ago) link

lol “the unhappy warrior”

Biden should start calling him that

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 6 March 2024 18:11 (one month ago) link

A rare Al Smith reference, but wasted on 99% of the electorate.

"drill, baby, drill" I guess these bozos figured out it was time to coin a new 3 word slogan even more annoying and objectionable than "jobs, jobs, jobs,"

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Wednesday, 6 March 2024 18:25 (one month ago) link

"Drill, baby, drill" is a recycled Sarah Palin slogan from 2008.

talk about scraping the oil barrel

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Wednesday, 6 March 2024 18:30 (one month ago) link

he does that con man thing of talking about how great everything is going to be really well. i mean, he's good at it. he would have been good at selling insurance. everything is always in the future. everything now is horrible. and if it never happens it doesn't matter because he can just keep talking like that forever.

scott seward, Wednesday, 6 March 2024 18:33 (one month ago) link

"Drill, baby, drill" is a recycled Sarah Palin slogan from 2008.

And yet if you ask him he'll say he came up with it.

Turns out "American carnage" was not descriptive, but aspirational.

"drill baby drill" is particularly stupid because US oil production is at an all-time high and the US is now the world's largest oil producer

facts don't matter to MAGA

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 6 March 2024 19:13 (one month ago) link

I love how he thinks he's running against Barack Obama.

I think I mentioned this elsewhere but this is way more concerning to me than Biden's verbal slips, like it's one thing to mix up people who have similar positions or statuses but the current President, and guy you are running against in the election, should not be one of those things you mix up. in fact asking who the current President is is one of those things they ask you when you're suspected of having a concussion.

frogbs, Wednesday, 6 March 2024 19:16 (one month ago) link

Also Biden has been making verbal slips since 1980, that's just how he's wired

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 6 March 2024 19:20 (one month ago) link

I think there's a credible case to be made that Trump decided to run after Obama roasted him at the 2011 Correspondents' Dinner. Of course, Trump had already been riding the "birther" hobby horse--that was the basis for Obama's jokes--but there certainly was an obsessive quality to the way Trump tried to erase Obama's legacy. So, in some ways, I suppose he is still running against Obama.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 6 March 2024 19:26 (one month ago) link

There are Trumpers who think Obama is the real President and he tells Biden what to do. Or the real President who isn’t Donald Trump.

it's weird because it's not like fringe hateful conservative candidates, some with decent fame/money, hadn't run before, and usually did poorly (including he himself in his failed Reform Party bid in 2000). but gay people being treated better and a Black man in office for 8 years pissed everyone off so much that he became their hero.

it's weird how it's just accepted now considering how ridiculous it seemed at the time.

sigh

otm. I remember an Obama-era Village Voice article titled something like "White America Has Lost Its Mind," describing exactly this phenomenon.

this is my tombstone statement for the trumpocene: "we are trapped in fifth grade." trump is the kid who has nothing going for him except the one thing that matters in ayn-rand-land -- his parents are loaded -- and unfortunately way too many of our classmates are (conditioned to be?) lazy and don't want to 'listen to the teacher' / 'do their homework' preferring (conforming) instead to emulate the rich kid and his privileged dingbat clique (rather than risk getting ganged up on by them). not terribly original i acknowledge but somehow since at least dubya we can't seem to break this idiotic suck-up cycle

he also got real lucky by running against such a weak and diluted field - you had like 12 identical candidates who all sucked in the same ways, to the point where the presumptive nominee was Jeb Bush, simply because of his last name. that said I admit Trump played the game pretty well - he was loud and obnoxious enough to draw ratings and was legitimately whiny and pissed off in a way other rich businessman candidates couldn't pull off. I think Republican voters legitimately resent anyone who comes off as smarter than them so Trump is kind of their perfect candidate.

“agreeance” lol w these opinions, though my disturbing realization after 2004 prez election was “omfg it’s like we’re stuck in HS!” but my realization after 2016 was “omfg it’s like we’re stuck in 8th grade!”
