Parks and Rec was not a super-mainstream "four-quadrant" hit, but it had a devoted fan base, or else it wouldn't have lasted seven seasons on NBC.

jaymc, Monday, 4 March 2024 19:31 (one month ago) link

psychotic thinking that a national sitcom that lasted 7 seasons on a major network isn't popular

kurt schwitterz, Monday, 4 March 2024 19:34 (one month ago) link

Curious how many people SNL approaches to host who say no. Mark Ruffalo recently told Marc Maron that he'd been asked at some point but turned it down because he's dyslexic, so reading cue cards terrifies him, and he doesn't memorize lines quickly either.

So he's definitely a lurker.

some guys have all the luck, got a thousand starving actors out here and ruffalo gets all the parts and can’t even memorise lines fml

neither

I'm just checking whether it can be built up to, is all. Is this, just to check, you signing on to the line from unperson above that almost no-one is famous, or is it more "you lads are thrashing about in the side of the room that the elephant isn't in"?

Is Ken Early famous?

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 4 March 2024 20:29 (one month ago) link

Gary Oldman initially accepted a hosting opportunity in 1992. After speaking with Malcolm McDowell, who told him horror stories about his 1989 episode, he backed out just before his week commitment was set to begin. I don’t blame him at all

xxp I've always gotten the impression that it's a lot of work, if you do it right. I've a little more respect for the people who really dive into it when they do host, like Tom Hanks (a bit player from Family Ties)

After speaking with Malcolm McDowell, who told him horror stories about his 1989 episode

The McDowell episode was the second one from the notorious SNL '80 season, and is considered a contender for The Worst Episode Ever (https://www.onesnladay.com/2018/11/27/november-22-1980-malcolm-mcdowell-captain-beefheart-the-magic-band-s6-e2/), but it's also notable for Captain Beefheart being the musical guest, and for being Eddie Murphy's first episode (as an extra -- he appeared on Weekend Update in the next ep, and officially joined the cast the next week).

The Jenna Ortega/Aubrey Plaza joint appearance at the SAG awards remains funny to me

XP SNL '80 is perhaps the most fascinating chapter in the show's history:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmj1Q91tIUo

deems, your definition of fame is basically 'this person is so inextricably woven into the cultural fabric that you are probably subconsciously aware of their existence even if you have been comatose for the entirety of their career', correct my math if it's off

Great-Tasting Burger Perceptions (Old Lunch), Monday, 4 March 2024 20:51 (one month ago) link

SNL '80 is not great but it's not nearly as bad as everyone says. I'm particularly chagrined that Gail Matthius never got much of a break after that, she was v good.

Great-Tasting Burger Perceptions (Old Lunch), Monday, 4 March 2024 20:54 (one month ago) link

Correct, I made a typo. McDowell was promoting Caligula, and that episode infamously makes light of domestic American terrorism

that's fitting, considering all of the people who have shared horror stories about Gary Oldman as a human being

Oldman is a joy to work with on sets from what I’ve heard. I just saw Peter Medak two nights ago and he raved about working with him on Romeo is Bleeding

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 4 March 2024 21:06 (one month ago) link

xpost I'm referring more to his off-screen behavior. he's a "fuck political correctness" asshole and that Playboy interview controversy only went away because he cried on tv in his apology, which is the elixir which makes everything ok.

CEO Greedwagon (Neanderthal), Monday, 4 March 2024 21:10 (one month ago) link

OL i like that definition let's go with that yes

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Monday, 4 March 2024 21:11 (one month ago) link

anyway Sydney Sweeney is famous, though it's understandable that not everyone knows who she is because right now the entertainment world is oversaturated with so much damn content at the push of a button that it's harder to keep up with everybody.

the misogynistic responses surrounding her hosting that I seemed to run into all weekend against my will was to be expected because this country is a cesspool but was no less infuriating with that knowledge.

CEO Greedwagon (Neanderthal), Monday, 4 March 2024 21:12 (one month ago) link

Oh, I figured. I know Oldman is a Tory asshole. There were rumours about him being abusive while married to Uma Thurman as well

Wait just a gol-durned minute there young fella! Not all us ilxors who are out of touch with recent trends in popular culture are old people. Now take me for example. I'm out of touch AND I'm old, BUT I'm not all ilxors. Therefore not all ilxors are old and out of touch. QED

Anyone who can legally buy beer talking about Saturday Night Live sounds old as fuck, because Saturday Night Live's target audience is high school students who want to watch something they think is intended for people older than themselves.
