btw I buy half loaves of bread all the time

and anyway i’d like to know more about this “proportionally sized” sandwich “kit” - does it look anything like… a sandwich?

epistantophus, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 01:39 (one month ago) link

er, proportionally priced, that is

I left my Kraft Mayo out accidentally but hope that it is full of enough preservatives that I won't die when I eat it again.

Part of the problem for me is that I have frequent visitors who all have their own food needs. I end up with a refrigerator full of stuff that I wouldn't buy for myself.

I love leftovers, but making a typical recipe of a meal for six is burdensome. I don't want to eat the same thing for five more days, I just don't. And reducing the quantities in the recipe to one just makes it a slog

I make my own sourdough bread. It requires a dutch oven (like a Le Creuset). It is fantastic, as good as Tartine's. I slice it up, eat some, and put the remainder into the freezer for later. I can give you all the recipe if you want, but it is long.

Along with the bread I freeze bolognese sauce, rice, homemade chicken broth, soups etc. But there are a lot of recipes that require fresh ingredients that have to be bought in quantity and cannot be saved

In this guy's tiny mind it stands to reason that his imaginary "sandwich kit" would be significantly cheaper than buying a sandwich some other way, because he would be supplying all the labor of assembling the sandwich! ofc, this notion only reflects his profound ignorance, but he's too ignorant to know how ignorant he is.

Realizing that what this person really wants is the BLT equivalent of that “peanut butter and jelly swirled together in a jar” thing.

I would consider a spread made of blended bacon lettuce and tomato and a dab of mayo as a binder

dan s i think what a lot of people are reacting to is the idea that you have to keep eating the same dish for 5 days. you can make other things with the same ingredients. if you can’t think of anything else to do you could just make like a “salad”, an “omelette” a “soup” .. humanity has faced this issue before

they've cracked the code

really timely that this popped up right after my meal discussion with coworkers yesterday afternoon. there was much talk of freezing soups, stock, and sauces and how owning a chest freezer is great if you have the space

the coworker whose wife doesn't eat leftovers apparently has insisted that they'd end up with more freezer burned items, as they keep having that issue in their fridge, is WRONG imo. you get freezer burn by regularly opening and closing the freezer and having things that are open but not well-sealed. stuff in a chest freezer is much less likely to have that issue imo

George Costanza would solve this dilemma by keeping a platter of sandwiches at the ready by his bedside just in case an appropriately intimate moment should arise

timely post, was just thinking about getting a chest freeze vs upright freezer xp

, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 15:27 (one month ago) link

a chest freezer is an incredibly family friendly food extension device. ours deserves a memorial stone when finally it kicks, but at 21 y/o it hums along.

yeah those things seem to last forever, you could prob pick up a 20 y/o one for nothing and itd keep going another 20

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 17:13 (one month ago) link

bought a chest freezer like the one in the video, 90% of which are newly identical, in the first year of the pandemic and just restocked it with essentials and junk (cart full of Trader Joe’s frozen bags and boxes) every so often and it’s not near needing defrosting 3.5 years later

my Costco purchase of many tuna steaks was unnecessary but seems freezer-stable

Look at Snapchat trucking along there. Worth noting that it's recently been explicitly marketing itself as "not social media," and the ways in which it's not probably do have something to do with why it's not doing as terribly as the platforms that usually get more attention.

I know the place has been getting slowly worse since Elon bought it but it feels like it's reached an inflection point recently. I was on during last night Bucks/Lakers game and most of the Bucks guys I follow just weren't tweeting and the ones that did either wouldn't get put in my timeline, or they did but wound up out of order. When I first loaded up the site 3 of the first 5 tweets were the exact same one (letting me know there's a new Scooter album out, nice). Every time I clicked a tweet there were multiple replies by pornbots. Nearly all the ads are of this disgusting roided out shirtless man pounding raw eggs. A bunch of the discourse was about whether or not the Baltimore bridge incident was caused by DEI. I uhhh do not think this place is coming back.

yeah if you go on there to search a breaking news story all the result are accounts making "jokes" with gifs or memes or people doing very low quality conspiracy shit, there used to be people who knew what they were talking about giving you the straight dope

The limited scope of that community note is kind of funny. Like where to start with the rest of it, but at least we can say that the Vatican and Hawaii are pretty far apart.

Get this: the last time I was on Maui was for a Catholic wedding, and the last Catholic wedding* I attended was on Maui... #ppn

*should note that one of the bride's aunts was earmarked in the program to perform "Ave Maria" and I thought to myself "oh man, that's a lot of pressure" and sure enough she turned out to be ex-opera and casually belted out a remarkable rendition with a smile on her face while winking at folks.
