What if, randomly, one of the prospective jurors was a still-living OJ Simpson

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 15 April 2024 20:30 (two weeks ago) link

The defense needs to find some of the OJ jurors. They even speak like Trump:

"I've always been very comfortable with my decision and the decision of the 11 other jurors," she said during the interview. "The evidence that was shown that was given to us and we had to consider. And at that point, there was reasonable doubt and it was something that you cannot deny, and that's why the verdict came so quick."

Huh

Robert F Kennedy Jr claims Trump had asked him to be running mate

Robert F Kennedy Jr, the prominent conspiracy theorist and independent presidential candidate, claimed on Monday he had turned down an offer from Donald Trump to be his running mate for the White House.

The assertion followed the launch earlier in the day of a website attacking Kennedy, published by a pro-Trump political action committee called Make America Great Again Inc (Maga Inc).

Accusing Kennedy, 70, of being a “leftist radical”, the vitriolic website attempts to highlight what it says are his extremist liberal positions, including supporting a 70% rate of income tax and pledging he would sign an assault weapons ban.

NY judge Juan Merchan rejects Trump's request to skip attending trial next Thursday to attend Supreme Court hearing on his "presidential immunity" argument

Judge: "Your client is a criminal defendant in New York. He is required to be here. He is not required to be in the Supreme Court. I will see him here next week"

He could be lying, and he could be telling the truth. Either possibility is viable.

They can't, obviously, ask prospective jurors how they voted last election or what their political affiliation is. I was thinking of ways you could maybe get around that:

"When you hear someone use 'bigly' in a sentence, do you immediately assume that person's a moron?"

also I'm sure once he sees all the coverage and jokes about him falling asleep at the trial he won't shut the fuck up about it, because that's the sort of shit that really bothers him. like he brings up the two-hand water thing and walking down the ramp all the time. also the thing where he thought he was running against Obamna. just one more thing to be really really fucking annoying about

just taking a moment to fully appreciate how extremely weird this all is, like for the first time in history a former US president is sitting in a criminal trial (with several more criminal trials on the horizon), and it's for paying off a porn star and falsifying a bunch of records to cover it up. he posts these really erratic word salad screeds about it online but falls asleep at the actual trial. and the thing he's complaining so much about is not getting to see his son's high school graduation, a kid he's never actually acknowledged in the past (Barron didn't even live at the White House did he?), who by the way was the one his wife was pregnant with when he was cheating on her. idk the whole thing is just insane, it kinda reminds me of late-period Rome when emperors would name their horses as Senators or whatever

I wonder if Merchan has any leeway in the number of alternate jurors he can seat along with the main twelve. I think the stress of this trial is going to eat jurors alive.

the longer this goes the worse it's gonna be for him and it seems likely it might be a while because A) they're having a lot of problems finding jurors and B) he's almost certainly gonna violate his gag order

frogbs, Tuesday, 16 April 2024 16:29 (two weeks ago) link

So the US jury selection system is a mystery to me, in the UK you just get sent a letter then you have to sit on whatever case you're picked for. What happens if they genuinely can't find twelve good men and true who are able to convince anyone that they're never heard of the fella and will judge him impartially? Move the trial to Puerto Rico or something?

the scouse that roared (Matt #2), Tuesday, 16 April 2024 16:37 (two weeks ago) link

is it really true that they are having a hard time? there's a very large pool for this trial and it seems like they are just going through it as expected, lots of people will be excused but they just need to get it down to 12 and maybe backups

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Tuesday, 16 April 2024 16:39 (two weeks ago) link

I am not a lawyer, but I'm pretty sure eventually a judge can just decide to go with what they've got.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 16 April 2024 16:44 (two weeks ago) link

that is, jury selection can't be drawn out indefinitely.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 16 April 2024 16:44 (two weeks ago) link

Now: Trump's head slowly dropped, his eyes closed. It jerked back upward. He adjusts himself. Then, his head droops again. He straightens up, leaning back. His head doops for a third time, he shakes his shoulders. Eyes closed still. His head drops. Finally, he pops his eyes open.

mine was kind of like that, I was #47 of 50 and got asked much less questions than the first 30 or so did, eventually was placed on it mostly on the principle of "eh, he seems good enough"

not sure if that's gonna happen here though. I do think there are unbiased folks out there who really don't follow the news and just don't vote but they may be hard to find in New York. last I heard they hadn't picked a single juror yet.
