It’s gonna be a long year

It feels to me like Trump has lost about a third of his mojo. There's a good chance he's fallen below a threshold to where his stumble bum campaign de-motivates the more marginally-committed GOP voters from voting and Republicans start losing down-ballot races along with the presidency. otoh, I expect this will be the year where very determined reproductive rights voters, who may be unenthusiastic or uniformed on other issues, cast ballots in decisive numbers. And they will shun Republicans like the plague.

the polling hasn't really reflected that yet, Trump is still tied nationally and leads in the swing states. of course polls probably aren't too reliable yet if some of them are still showing RFK getting 15% or whatever. fwiw I suspect Trump going crazy over RFK and challenging Biden to debate him on the spot means there's some bad internals happening right now

also feel like if he actually does get a felony conviction from this trial it will move the needle some. idk how many people are actually following it, which in light of OJ dying seems odd, because surely Donald Trump is the highest profile person to ever be tried criminally in the USA? if he's found guilty I think that actually would move some soft R support. especially knowing more criminal trials are coming. also I think it would means he would spend now until the election whining about how unfair everything is in lieu of talking about actual political issues. like his signature issue is going to be pardoning himself and I just don't think that plays well. meanwhile if he's acquitted it gives creedence to the "witch hunt" narrative and you can bet his entire campaign will be a victory lap. same as when his boy Bill Barr let him off the hook. so yeah even if there are no meaningful penalties for him in all this the conviction is really huge in my view

I saw a headline during jury selection that was like “could you be an unbiased juror in trump’s trial” and I realized I probably could because I haven’t a clue what he’s accused of

― papal hotwife (milo z), Saturday, 27 April 2024 05:01 (three weeks ago) link
There's a nonzero chance Trump will try to get himself on a jury for a Trump trial.
This VERY CORRUPT compromised "JUDGE" first makes me walk through a TINY DOOR, then won't let me be on a jury of my pee-ers for my OWN TRIAL. Very unfair and sad.

hard to tell in photos given his weird posture issues and decisions (and multiple other issues and decisions) but trump is 6'3" (or anyway was before havana syndrome shrunk him so)

He is not, dude wears lifts better than De Santis, which explains Trump’s much-pondered “front half of a centaur” posture.
No, he's legitimately pretty tall. I saw him in the lobby of a building I work in once, sometime around 2012 maybe?, and he was at least my height. To quote the drill sergeant in Full Metal Jacket, "I didn't know they stacked shit that high!", but he's not lying about his height.

xpost my high school one was certainly dull, but then the girl who got Senior Lunch revoked for returning from it drunk walked onto the stage and about 50 people shouted "drunk!" at her. (fucked up, but the first actual thing of note that happened during the entire ceremony, other than one of the kids smacking the male principal on his ass after he got his diploma)

one funny trial note is that apparently they called someone from C-SPAN as a witness, basically to testify that C-SPAN's footage is authentic, something which should not have to be done except for the fact that Trump's team is challenging everything. so it's kind of their own fault this is going to take so long.

― Big Bong Theory (stevie), Tuesday, 30 April 2024 17:07 (two weeks ago) link
for the lawyers who are charging by the hour for this yeah
― frogbs, Tuesday, 30 April 2024 17:10 (two weeks ago) link
the defense attorney for the trial I was on did this kind of shit constantly, meaning the federal prosecutors had to fly in all sorts of people from various states, all essentially to say stuff like "yes this security footage is from the hotel I worked at" and then detail everything they knew about how tapes were retained. its not like the defense was making an actual effort to claim the tapes weren't real, but it is within the bounds to challenge anything you want before it gets entered into evidence. I cannot imagine this attorney thought he had a chance at winning the case but obviously the longer he was in court the more he made, which is such a tremendous waste of resources, given how much taxpayer money it must cost to keep these trials going several days longer than they need to, not to mention flying these people in and giving them a place to stay
― frogbs, Tuesday, 30 April 2024 17:34 (two weeks ago) link
This is not just a defense counsel trying to get paid more. If the witness who needs to testify in order to introduce the document into evidence is not able to do so, because of some reason (illness, whatever), it could end up allowing the defense to preclude that evidence if there is not another witness in a timely manner.
