i need to dig this out, it's been a while. kneejerk is "send his love," but i'm not actually sure why.

MOAN

Yeah probably "Long Snake Moan" but I want to listen to this again before choosing something.

Tim F, Sunday, 16 August 2009 09:41 (fourteen years ago) link

2nd fav pj album, this. "c'mon billy" still floors me though; so much packed into 3 mins, not a second wasted.

lex pretend, Sunday, 16 August 2009 09:44 (fourteen years ago) link

Where I sadly realized she wasn't going to be one of my all-time favorites. After the originality of the first two, she backed into some mid-90s alt-rock cliches here, though there's still plenty of good.

bendy, Sunday, 16 August 2009 12:41 (fourteen years ago) link

Long Snake Moan is probably my favourite. I have a soft spot for Teclo, though -- lovely moments where she references Beefheart (with whom she corresponds).

Duke, Sunday, 16 August 2009 19:42 (fourteen years ago) link

either "C'mon Billy" or the title track. Still think that's one of the best openers ever.

"Meet Ze Monsta"

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 16 August 2009 23:12 (fourteen years ago) link

I saw her like 3 weeks earlier at the hfstival and it's in my top 10 favorite shows! She had more charisma than anyone I'd seen in my life up until then. Going with the title track here because it's great, it's big, it's spare, and it has sand blowing through it. Also of note is the transition into the bridge at about 2:24.

"The Dancer" is my favorite thing she's ever done. I especially love the way she wails 'heart' at the end of the song.

yessssssss

I like everything here but I've got to go with 'C'mon Billy'. Maybe not my favourite song of hers (though top five, easy) but my favourite vocal.

Gavin in Leeds, Monday, 17 August 2009 21:21 (fourteen years ago) link

The title track is my favorite song of hers aside from possibly "Hardly Wait".

nate dogg is a feeling (HI DERE), Monday, 17 August 2009 21:23 (fourteen years ago) link

Although really I don't think there's a single song here that isn't fantastic.

for me tough pick between the two evil quiet ones, teclo and i think i'm a mother.

or the title track.

or shit, the dancer!

andrew m., Monday, 17 August 2009 21:29 (fourteen years ago) link

"The Dancer" -- just -- over the title track. Lovely album.

Lostandfound, Monday, 17 August 2009 22:50 (fourteen years ago) link

Sudden surge of love for "The Dancer"! ^__^

Leee, Monday, 17 August 2009 23:18 (fourteen years ago) link

Voted "Meet Ze Monsta", but comments above saying any of these could have taken it...OTM.

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 15:23 (fourteen years ago) link

clip at the top of thread is awwwwwesome.

tylerw, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 16:05 (fourteen years ago) link

I think the impact of the record may currently be understated by some recent 90's revisionism.. For years I assumed this record was considered her masterwork, but for the past few years it seems Rid Of Me and Dry receive more attention.

working for the man is real good, but i had to go with monsta.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 23:01 (fourteen years ago) link

title track just beats out Working For The Man.

god I love the bass sound on this album. so distorted and overdriven, it sounds loud no matter what volume you play it at.

sleeve, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 23:38 (fourteen years ago) link

sigh
at this point, I'm predicting wrong (meaning non-C'mon Billy or The Dancer) results. :(

Turangalila, Thursday, 20 August 2009 00:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Turangalila, don't despair, remember the "sudden surge of love" upthread!

:D

Turangalila, Thursday, 20 August 2009 04:47 (fourteen years ago) link

oh shit i have to hurry up. to bring you my love is so great. but working for the man is just killer. that bass is IT.

alex in mainhattan, Thursday, 20 August 2009 18:24 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't understand the appeal of meet ze monsta at all. by far the weakest track on the record. pj harvey on autopilot. the dancer on the other hand is my romantic choice. i saw her live about ten years ago. we went the 400 kilometers to munich to see giant sand. howe gelb started at 8pm sharp. we were 5 minutes late. she was the main act. and god did she blow away howe. what a stage presence, what an energy. unbelievable. she's just blood and bones but man does she kick ass.

I forgot to vote. T_T

Leee, Thursday, 20 August 2009 23:46 (fourteen years ago) link

only two votes for working for the man? without mine it would have finished last. i am surprised.

god that song is so annoying

Yeah, well, jazz isn't exactly in love with Johnny either. (bug), Friday, 21 August 2009 06:00 (fourteen years ago) link

i like how all the songs on the album can be paired off sonically

to bring you my love/teclo
meet ze monsta/long snake moan
working for the man/i think i'm a mother
c'mon billy/send his love to me
down by the water/the dancer

lex pretend, Friday, 21 August 2009 09:50 (fourteen years ago) link

This album is so sick.

billstevejim, Monday, 24 August 2009 14:24 (fourteen years ago) link

seven years pass...

bass tone on working for the man is fucking monstrously great

seven months pass...

Been playing this album a lot over the last two weeks. Love her vocalisation on/of the title track, what an opener. Tough to OPO, it's between the top three of this poll. I think.

willem, Friday, 9 February 2018 10:23 (six years ago) link

Would love to see her live again. Only saw her once, in 1992. Not as extravagant a stage presence as I've seen of later 90s dates but still, so impressive. By far the best of the line up of the festival imo, and yes, that includes Pearl Jam's epic performance (setlist: O Stella, Dress, Highway 61 Revisited, Hair, Victory, Sheela-Na-Gig, Water - https://youtu.be/hNmLwW1RaXM?t=1h33m13s)
