so dreamy. "want you back" is like a melted fantasy of madonna.

flying squid attack (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 16 August 2009 04:53 (fourteen years ago) link

her weakest track...the ONLY weak track.

Spinspin Sugah, Sunday, 16 August 2009 05:18 (fourteen years ago) link

ha, no. the album does have some weakish tracks, but they don't bother me in the context of the album. but "want you back" is peak material. it's not afraid of itself.

flying squid attack (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 16 August 2009 05:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Can't stop listening to Want You Back

Trip Maker, Thursday, 27 August 2009 22:27 (fourteen years ago) link

that "artificial intelligence" song upthread is really nice. the synths are very nostalgic to me. they remind me of joe jackson or something. or like 80s yes.

Love this. Heard from folks who saw her in London that it was a bit dull live, but I guess I can see it might. Great stuff though.

jaxon, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 22:59 (fourteen years ago) link

Me and my dad love these two. This new wave of lo-fi/no-fi goodness keeps getting better and better. It's all very "cable access performance".

stop smoking that shit for once

quiet and secretively we will always be together (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 10 December 2009 07:02 (fourteen years ago) link

I had high hopes for this but my goodness, is this ever the wrong end of the 80s for me

I do like the hook on the chorus, though, when her voice comes in and it's all pretty

it just reminds me of the "nightclub" scene in so many cop operas on telly in the late 80s

Karen Tregaskin, Thursday, 10 December 2009 10:29 (fourteen years ago) link

also nite funk= whole album! (sorry if that's old news but i just assumed am i gonna make it was a 1 off)

no fear, Sunday, 25 April 2010 12:53 (thirteen years ago) link

I assumed Nite-Funk as a one-off as well, but this news of a whole album is the kind of shit that gets me excited.

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Sunday, 25 April 2010 13:22 (thirteen years ago) link

There is going to be a Nite Jewel thread on the roof of a building in my town in a couple of weeks and I'm pretty stoked.
I just hope it gets some promotional help, or that the right few people tell their friends about it. It's the kind of event that could easily fly under the radar.

Nite Jewel show.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 4 May 2010 16:26 (thirteen years ago) link

"Want You Back" is my favorite. I've only got a crummy rip of Good Evening, it'd be nice to hear that on vinyl.

new song "am i real?" w/ teen inc is really good:

speaking of teen inc, they rule. "fountains" is ridiculous:

what was that? new alb??

titchyschneiderhouserules (s1ocki), Thursday, 29 July 2010 19:13 (thirteen years ago) link

I figured it was maybe tour only. I got one from them on the road.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 29 July 2010 19:54 (thirteen years ago) link

that's how i bought teh first one

titchyschneiderhouserules (s1ocki), Thursday, 29 July 2010 19:56 (thirteen years ago) link

tour only, uh huh. some of it was on a japanese 7" too i think. i liked another horizon the most. think stones throw are rereleasing her LP, too.

Earning your Masters in Library and Information Science is beautiful (schlump), Thursday, 29 July 2010 20:49 (thirteen years ago) link

this teen inc stuff sounds like level 42. not a knock of course

Forget You and I is gorgeous.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 13:31 (thirteen years ago) link

Weak For Me is perfect. The rest of the songs tend to get a little too moody and lost.

coolsundays, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 19:41 (thirteen years ago) link

The newer stuff is much more consistent imo.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 19:42 (thirteen years ago) link

i hadn't been paying attention and missed this whole EP, but it's gorgeous.

i think i'm just waiting til the next LP to see if she's kinda jumped the shark in terms of ditching her woozy futuristic bedroom-synths thing, in favour of overtly celebratory eighties music. i like it all just as much, but it seems like a weird, deliberate step, that doesn't usually bode well for musicians.

the new one is pretty jiving anyhow

schlump, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 17:14 (thirteen years ago) link

How many copies of Good Evening were made on vinyl? I wanna bid on one but don't wanna over pay.

a bunch, i thought?, in case you're still thinking about it. it's getting re-pressed on stones throw sometime, anyway.

she's collaborating with julia holter at the minute, which sounds like a good combo

I’m guessing from the notes to this single that she and cole have split ?

First para of the press release

In 2018, Gonzalez’s twelve year marriage dissolved. This left her alone and displaced, drifting from friend’s couch to friend’s couch. At the same time, she began her PhD in Musicology at UCLA. Gonzalez’s research on women’s musical lament practices formed a historical backbone for what became No Sun. Dating back to ancient Greece, the lament has utilized female voices as a vehicle for expressing communal and personal grief. In her research, Gonzalez considers this tradition within the context of contemporary pop divas, asking the question “What does it mean to be a professional mourner?” or to be a woman hired as an emotional vessel for a historically male composer? Gonzalez’s research considers the creative power of such singers, arguing that while often seen as visceral performers alone, these women are agents in their own right.

I prefer happy jewel to recent reflective sad jewel

calstars, Thursday, 5 August 2021 15:31 (two years ago) link

i am deeply here for reflective sad nite jewel - super excited for her artistically at how she's taken her core sound and driven it somewhere you wouldn't have thought it could go? listening to that first single felt a bit like watching s3 of twin peaks - the familiar made somehow strange, the denial of expectations leading to something more deeply satisfying

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Friday, 27 August 2021 15:29 (two years ago) link

I listened, sounds pretty mopey and introspective if that's your thing. A lot of songs seem to start with "I..."

calstars, Friday, 27 August 2021 15:41 (two years ago) link

Actually I like the vibe of this. I wasn’t sold on the tracks that came out pre-release, but overall I think it’s really nice. A “mature” album I guess? Contemplative and all that. But still has some of her late-night grooves.

Title track is downright jazzy.

loving this so far
