Austin is a neat guy. I like him. I'm afraid he's going to have a massive bug out and get tossed one week, though, he seems awfully nervous & some of the other people are just cool professionals who may never do anything spectacular but they won't crash and burn either.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 2 December 2004 17:33 (nineteen years ago) link

austin seems like an isaac mizrahi type of person. and plus, i kind of went for the wilted corhusk thing. a real genius would have worked it.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 2 December 2004 17:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Milk and Coca-Cola mixed together. Perhaps the caffeine was making Austin nervous and the milk wasn't enough to take the edge off. I thought his dress and the one made from the blue lawn chair were the best.

I was really glad to see the "follow your bliss" guy eliminated, though I thought Starr's garish dress was worse. And I can barely understand anything Heidi Klum says.

Anyway, I'll be rooting for Austin, of course, due to my one degree of separation.

Nemo (JND), Thursday, 2 December 2004 17:41 (nineteen years ago) link

Starr's dress was just about as bad.. but somehow the arrogance of follow-yr-bliss guy was worse, plus the tacky aluminum foil edging on that paper jacket! arrrrgh!

Austin's dress was super. I was convinced he was going to whiff it completely when I saw him trying to weave that stuff together, and then poof! next scene he's got this amazing design. I liked the lawnchair thing too.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 2 December 2004 18:00 (nineteen years ago) link

didn't laverne of laverne and shirley drink milk and pepsi mixed? also, i have an irrational and quite visceral hatred of heidi klum.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 2 December 2004 18:01 (nineteen years ago) link

starr is going to be voted off soon, no doubt. especially if she keeps up this mousy flower no confidence schtick -- i mean, did you see her body language at the end of the show?

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 2 December 2004 18:17 (nineteen years ago) link

I know! I honestly thought she was going to start writhing around on the ground in front of the judges and crying, like she did backstage.

Nemo (JND), Thursday, 2 December 2004 19:11 (nineteen years ago) link

the crybaby schtick isnt going to work past round two. plus, looking at her work online, i dont think she's got the chops - everything on her portfolio looks like a sailor moon outfit.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 2 December 2004 19:57 (nineteen years ago) link

also, jay went to school in philly. lots of people have thrown him out of their parties.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 2 December 2004 19:58 (nineteen years ago) link

three weeks pass...
week three: starr is finally gone!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 23 December 2004 02:40 (nineteen years ago) link

repeat, boo

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 23 December 2004 03:04 (nineteen years ago) link

I KNOW.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 23 December 2004 03:04 (nineteen years ago) link

that girl is going to kill herself

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 23 December 2004 04:59 (nineteen years ago) link

yes, these people are all actors and fake and let's poke at them with forceps

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 23 December 2004 05:06 (nineteen years ago) link

i wish i could tell you starr was an actor but i ran into dozens of people just like her in art school -- meek little girls who liked to draw and thought that they could be an artist, until they had to deal with critiques, when they realized they lacked vision and a spine.

watching project runway reminds me of the crits i had when i was a graphic design program, except with scary ugly germans and no background music.

lastly: doesnt the closing music of the show sound like "stay dont go" by spoon? im totally convinced they sampled the beatboxing part of it.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 23 December 2004 13:17 (nineteen years ago) link

but she's not in art school; she's a corporate lawyer.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 23 December 2004 13:53 (nineteen years ago) link

what is up w/no new episodes until 1/5? is this because the ratings are horrendous?

poor Starr. I sympathize in a way w/what happens when you drop someone in a totally new environment w/entirely different rules & start ratcheting up the pressure. if she works really hard on the craft she may eventually produce some good designs.

as long as Austin, Kara, and Robert make the last rounds I am content. Jay is one of those people that looks out for lines you should never cross in social situations & soon enough he'll start barging right across them. Kevin is a rockist.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 23 December 2004 13:56 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm rooting for Austin, Wendy and the short-haired girl, though Austin is the only one I like. I hate Jay but I have to say I liked the art deco dress a lot.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 23 December 2004 14:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Nora, "the punk," maybe? She's funny. I noticed how she slyly implied how uncool the last project was by pointing out that all the people from her hometown in Connecticut wore Banana Republic. I don't like Wendy's stuff, it's kind of meh at best. Austin is fabulous indeed though I wonder what happens if he gets another challege where something super.. uh.. fantastical simply won't do? Robert's design for episode 2 was hilarious and he's great on TV, so they had better not get rid of him early.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 23 December 2004 14:38 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, Nora. I don't really like Wendy's stuff either. I think I like her hair. I've barely paid attention to Robert. The Brazilian girl or whatever is pretty good too.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 23 December 2004 14:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Alexandra.. well.. her stuff is pretty, you know, it's clothes for young professional women who drink cosmopolitans at lounges with one-word non sequitur names, etc. Robert is just the hotness. I would wear Nora's stuff, that's more my cup of tea - she has a funny t-shirt at the project runway store with fish hooks printed on it, which I would buy in a minute if it weren't yellow. Can't wear yellow.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 23 December 2004 15:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Poor Starr. Aren't corporate lawyers supposed to be ruthless and tough? Does she act like that in the courtroom?

Nemo (JND), Thursday, 23 December 2004 15:19 (nineteen years ago) link

but she's not in art school; she's a corporate lawyer.

-- gabbneb (gabbne...), December 23rd, 2004. (gabbneb) (link)

whoa, like i totally did not realize this fact! was it mentioned on the show?!

seriously though, thats what makes her compelling. i mean, she's a lawyer and she cant last through a critique, which is not unlike being on trial.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 23 December 2004 16:27 (nineteen years ago) link

alexandra's work is very nice and pretty, but its not challenging at all. everything has been constructed out of the same shape.

austin is way too costumey and wont compromise his ideals for specific projects [his dress for #3 was too springlike for a winter collection].

i tagged jay as crashing and burning early because he wouldnt be able to adapt to the challenges at hand, but this hasnt been the case. dont count him out just yet.

kara's work is very thought out and incredibly well executed -- i could see her being the winner.

i dont know what to make of kevin. his responses to everything has been really well done. definately will be there until the end, unless something disastrous happens.

i kind of find nora's work to be too hip at times. cutting down large segments of the population is not going to help her business down the line.

robert's work is awful, just as cliched and contrived as starr's stuff, but in a different way. no wonder he divorced his wife and came back to the states -- just by the kinds of things he's put women in, the guy has no understanding of the opposite sex. men's suits? fake fur? what the fuck? i dont think he'll last much longer. by the promos ive seen for the next episode, supposedly he cracks his head open on a sidewalk after showing off how macho he is. serves him right.

vanessa, hm, another one i cant quite pin down. solid work but seems like an incredibly shitty person other wise. im sure that will bite her in the ass.

wendy could win this -- she made her mistakes early and is now being very careful about what she does. but who knows?

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 23 December 2004 16:44 (nineteen years ago) link

I could see Kara winning indeed.. Kevin, no, he seems to be just going through the motions and never likely to hit on a really fresh idea, which means he'll prob last at least couple more rounds but won't be one of the top 3 or 4 at the end.

I like suits! If I were to seriously take the time to learn how to make anything, it'd be a really well tailored suit. Someday.. And yeah, Robert comes off as having plenty of cliched & ridiculous ideas about women. I figured there had to be a layer of irony to that, but maybe I'm just giving him wayyy too much benefit of the doubt b/c he is really good looking (and maybe that's yr layer of irony right there).

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 23 December 2004 17:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Also the suit from ep #2 looked strangely like something AUSTIN would wear! now that was weird. I am so entertained by these people.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 23 December 2004 17:21 (nineteen years ago) link

this is really the best show on tv.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 23 December 2004 17:26 (nineteen years ago) link

after watching three episodes in a row I got really tired of hearing Heidi say "fashion is all about whether your eeiiinn, or you are ouuuut". but i still love you heidi, it's okay.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 23 December 2004 17:30 (nineteen years ago) link

yes, it's totally the best thing on TV. now I am so afraid they'll kick off all the most interesting people in the next couple rounds and then I'll be all disappointed with the finals. but maybe they'll find a reason to bring back the people that got cut.

also, Tim rules it. I adore him. He should have his own show.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 23 December 2004 17:43 (nineteen years ago) link

I like Heidi's presence because it makes clear how unattractive she is. I like Tim too. I agree that Alexandra's work is totally unchallenging, but she also hasn't made any mistakes yet.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 23 December 2004 20:35 (nineteen years ago) link

also, i anticipate an amazing catfight between austin and jay.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 23 December 2004 20:53 (nineteen years ago) link

wow

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 23 December 2004 20:57 (nineteen years ago) link

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 6 January 2005 02:29 (nineteen years ago) link

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 6 January 2005 02:44 (nineteen years ago) link

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 6 January 2005 03:00 (nineteen years ago) link

whoa. i really thought nora was going to go this round, especially after she lost her shit.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 6 January 2005 03:01 (nineteen years ago) link

it's pretty clear that they picked a few people who didn't belong to sacrifice in the first few weeks while the show built its audience

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 6 January 2005 03:04 (nineteen years ago) link

wow, you really think so?! i never thought for a second that the programming might be rigged to maintain the audiences interest.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 6 January 2005 03:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Hah. There's a little blurb in the end credits about how the eliminations are made based on the judges' decision and input from producers etc.

I wonder if the ratings are any better for this episode. I was like jumping up and down, I was so excited that it was back on the air.

I still am not fond of Kevin but he behaved better this week. That singer! Ouch! Can we not have any more goth-lolita-gone-bad business ever again? Jay's outfit was the best by a mile, minus that awful skirt thing.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 6 January 2005 03:34 (nineteen years ago) link

hey, I don't usually watch this sort of thing

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 6 January 2005 03:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Wow, I am reading "Tim's take" on the Bravo site. 100% classic. I love Tim. So glad he's on the show more than HK.

http://www.bravotv.com/Project_Runway/Episode_4/Tims_Take_1.shtml

The three in turn selected their team members in a classic, wincingly painful process that all of us who were the last to be selected for softball remember all too well. (I certainly do!)

when I saw that pile of shredded fabric that would become the removable skirt, it looked like puke from Pee Wee's Playhouse and I thought, "uh-oh…", but they transformed it into something truly fabulous.

Believe me when I say that this industry responds to more garbage and bull*#!@, simply because the individual pitching the work is so passionate and artful in how the bull*#!@ is presented.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 6 January 2005 03:54 (nineteen years ago) link

i thought jay's outfit was fabulous. so far he's one of the few people who openly admit certain things are not his style but finds a way to work within the given parameters.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 6 January 2005 17:09 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, Jay's was smashing.. I noticed the best part was the leather corset made by Kara Saun. It was super similar to his envy outfit. But it worked for the challenge & the styling was perfect, too. I can't figure out why that singer wanted Kevin's monstrosity instead..

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 6 January 2005 21:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Is anyone else watching this? There must be more to gossip about! I read TV without Pity's Project Runway board and they've all picked up this insufferably smug writing style..

I wanna be a fashion designer. Except.. like Vanessa, I can't sew.

daria g (daria g), Friday, 7 January 2005 04:38 (nineteen years ago) link

my girlfriend is studying fashion and is simultaneously enamored and repulsed by this show... though she watches the repeats over and over again. at first i found it loathsome (and i still cannot stand jay, even though his clothing is getting much better-- adapting, i guess?), but now i'm pretty much addicted.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 7 January 2005 05:00 (nineteen years ago) link

and austing will NOT win, even though he's probably the most talanted couturier (is that the word?)... he's just not skilled at responding to the projects, and i think the judges are beginning to realize it...

also, the first time i've ever wanted to watch multiple episodes of any reality show.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 7 January 2005 05:02 (nineteen years ago) link

I have watched the first three episodes several times already! I watched the debut twice the day it aired & was totally hooked.

Austin is costumey and doesn't listen. I didn't think he had such a limited range but that was probably because the first dress was cornhusks. He's kind of doing the same thing every week and getting away with it (usually) because it is beautiful, and others have really fucked up.

I still don't know if Rob is super talented or what his style is. I think he's one of the few contestants who might be a real surprise, while with most, you kind of know what they'll do..

daria g (daria g), Friday, 7 January 2005 09:58 (nineteen years ago) link

aaaaahhh! I kind of knew what would happen but plz kick off Austin next episode ok thx.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 13 January 2005 03:02 (nineteen years ago) link

the "Hungry 4 Success" messaging and cutlery print (!) was probably the fastest I have ever been drained of goodwill to a reality show contestant ever, what a truly awful direction to go in

boxedjoy, Sunday, 26 April 2020 14:25 (three years ago) link

Sander showing versatility, high-fashion looks, commercial appeal, a USP to his pop-up and a willingness to adapt over the season, all made me think this was a set-up. I've seen clothes that were like Johnny's but nicer in the Zara sale.

boxedjoy, Sunday, 26 April 2020 14:27 (three years ago) link

I did laugh when the woman from Amazon turned up in that bright floral print though - Esther had no chance!

boxedjoy, Sunday, 26 April 2020 14:28 (three years ago) link

i'm interested in how egregious this was compared to, say, Gretchen beating Mondo on PR, then a few years later turning out to be grifting a living as a life-coach charging $800/h

also we're watching the first Siriano series from last year no spoilers plsss it's good tho

imago, Sunday, 26 April 2020 14:36 (three years ago) link

"i'm interested in how egregious this was compared to, say, Gretchen beating Mondo on PR, then a few years later turning out to be grifting a living as a life-coach charging $800/h" I didn't know about that!

I finally watched this. I see why they didn't go with Esther but I disagree with it. It was purely a commercial choice. They were worried she wouldn't want to dilute her aesthetic for mass production.

akm, Sunday, 26 April 2020 14:41 (three years ago) link

anyway, in general I still liked this more than recent PR but they have got to turn to the fucking music down next time.

akm, Sunday, 26 April 2020 14:42 (three years ago) link

xpost looking online the PR episodes from season 8 onward are a little over 60 minutes as opposed to ~40 minutes. That is way too much filler.

Yerac, Sunday, 26 April 2020 15:27 (three years ago) link

grr last year's PR (only halfway through!) is starting to severely overrate the one designer I'm kind of aesthetically opposed to. they did a video game character challenge and just handed her the win even though the other two at the top were entirely and demonstrably better. why did they have to keep Nina around lol

imago, Monday, 27 April 2020 09:30 (three years ago) link

oh yeah Hester's thing was super tiresome.

Yerac, Monday, 27 April 2020 13:33 (three years ago) link

thank GOD she did not win (although her final runway contained arguably her best work of the series), still would have preferred to see Bishme's runway

anyway

the winner was ordained from the second episode of the series onward. tt and i looked at each other. he was the one

imago, Wednesday, 29 April 2020 00:41 (three years ago) link

onto the 2019/2020 season next I guess! no spoilers pretty please. keep spoilering how ghastly Making The Cut was though, I'm enjoying it

imago, Wednesday, 29 April 2020 00:42 (three years ago) link

omfg both the winner and the elimination in Episode 2 of the latest PR season are so awful I'd almost call it a shark-jump. yeah they can redeem themselves when Devlin hopefully wins the series but Marquise was I so not kid probably my least favourite look and he took the damn thing, and Veronica is a better designer than at least half the room. absolutely insane taste-level fail from the entire judging panel

again, please no spoilers, but omg

imago, Wednesday, 29 April 2020 18:43 (three years ago) link

delvin and brittany sitting there 'safe' open-mouthed while the horrifyingly-restored marquise is, somehow, one of the TOP looks is kind of iconic tbf but really, what absolute trash

this series is solid-gold cast-iron bullshit

imago, Saturday, 2 May 2020 15:13 (three years ago) link

yeah, i wasn't a fan. and aren't the episodes entirely too long?

Yerac, Saturday, 2 May 2020 16:30 (three years ago) link

they are but the main problem is that they keep liking stuff by absolutely shitty designers, they brought back Marquise and his TERRIBLE boring aesthetic because Dayoung dropped out and now he has OUTLASTED Delvin I am fucking outraged also Sergio is the biggest cunt they've ever had on the show and Nancy is starting to irritate me and I have some time for Victoria but she should have gone instead of Delvin and basically Delvin is the best and if the winner isn't one of Geoffrey or Brittany then frankly I am dead

imago, Saturday, 2 May 2020 16:34 (three years ago) link

it is *outrageous* that on this season of extremely mediocre designers, Delvin has finished 7th

imago, Saturday, 2 May 2020 16:35 (three years ago) link

No Naomi Campbell though - she's not willing to gamble catching covid-19 and risk losing her career. And we're getting Jeremy Scott and Winnie Harlow who I think will make up for it. I didn't finish her season of ANTM but I remember Harlow being fantastically rich in personality on ANTM.

Season 2 of Making The Cut has started, first two episodes available. The pandemic is real and apparent - there's no travelling to amazing locations, but the "ranch" they're filming in looks incredible and expensive. It's a very well-cast line-up. There's a mix of exciting clothes and talent, and personalities you want to see win or really hate, which sounds really obvious for this kind of show but it's actually hard to do well. There's been some great looks already, especially Andrea's bridal trousers, and I don't disagree with any of the eliminations yet.
