A band of utter indifference to me, as are Son Volt and Uncle Tupelo and etc. The Walkabouts, now *there's* a band. Wilco in comparison are totally bland.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 18 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Very competent. When they play with Bragg they make Bragg sound like someone who can't really play or sing - and I say that as someone who loves Bragg. Maybe I ought to like Wilco a lot, they're that rootsy and good at what they do. I wish I could get more excited about them.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 18 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

no. dreadful. the sort of thing people who listen to classic rawk listen to when they are in between lobotomies.

keith, Wednesday, 18 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Anyone into 'Summerteeth', and stuff like the Eels, Crazy Horse, etc should waste no time in seeking out an album from last year called 'Nothing Stops Moving' by LA band Gingersol. A home-produced effort, it's happily now easier to find (unlike bad or even indifferent reviews of it) - a roots-pop cracker, if you like that sort of thing...

steve mcentee, Wednesday, 18 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yes. I suspect that in many parts (perhaps as evidenced by some earlier posts) they partly get a bad rap not solely for the style of music they play, but because of all of the critical bullshit heaped on them by the sort of critic who misses guitars and "songwriting" and all that on their contemporary CDs. Don't listen to those critics, they're misguided. It's OK to just listen to Wilco and like it and not worry about whether or not it's because they're more "authentic" or something.

Aside from that: I suspect that a little editing on their last two albums wouldn't hurt, but then I just never get around to listening to disc 2 of their second album, so maybe I just don't know how good it really is.

Josh, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I really liked Uncle Tupelo. Right after the split, I thought Son Volt was much stronger than Wilco, now it seems to be turning the other way. SV has sort of ridden the same songs into the ground while Wilco is expanding their scope.

I kinda liked AM when it came out but moreso now. BEING THERE is a bit too long and unfocused but there are some bright lights in there. I was a little weary when SUMMERTEETH came out with all the praise that it was getting. I figured it was just runoff from the MERMAID AVENUE hype, but then when I finally got the record (months after it came out and the hype had died some) I thought it was OK, then it started growning on me song by song. Now I think its great. Really fantastic. They're a really good band and depending on what their next album is, they could become a *classic* band.

Tim Baier, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I have "Being There" and "Summerteeth" and you know, they're OK, just OK. I just can't GET Summerteeth though - I've tried and tried and I can't see what's so great about it. It seems like a jigsaw of influences which just don't gel - and I don't like his voice.

Dr. C, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Sometimes I think to "get" an album, you should pick your favorite song and then listen to it several times over. Then when you're at fever pitch for that song, listen to your second favorite. And so on. With SUMMERTEETH, my original favorite song was the hidden track "Candy Floss", so go figure. But then again, if you don't like his voice, there ain't much point in tryin' is there?

Tim Baier, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

cf. my americana article. Yes, I like wilco very much. Summerteeth is brilliant. Being There was a revelation when I purchased it. Wasn't a fan of the Bragg collab (as far as I'm concerned he should have stopped after his early solo stuff with that marvelous sharp electric buzzsaw tone) -- uh, actually even classic. Like I've said before, Being There is as close as we've come to Big Star in some time.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Leaning dud - no single song has floored me. Played BEING THERE a few times, went right past me, so sold it. Ditto their pinecone rock cousins Son Volt - "Live Free Or Die" and "Drown" (titles right?) were okay, but ultimately, nup. I think Green On Red did it better, with more spunk and better chops, and I've had my fill of them, too. (HERE COME THE SNAKES still a classic, but.)

AP, Saturday, 21 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I should like them more but I don't. They almost seem cocky (not their personas but their songs, if that makes much sense) and a little too critically acclaimed for their own good.

Loved Uncle Tupelo, and Wilco just doesn't have the urgency they did live.

Dan Rivkin, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

They're a dynamite backing band on the Mermaid Avenue albums, but I'm lukewarm about their own records. Pleasant but just sort of eh...

So critically overrated in the US that I might *almost* not get mad if Tom were to describe them as irrelevant rockist crap.

Patrick, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Well obviously they're irrelevant and rockist....but I quite like Summerteeth: they're not crap ;)

Tom, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The whole point about Wilco (as Summerteeth proves beyond all doubt) is that they're not rockist, as opposed to Son Volt. Being There is not rockist, but rather operates to question the foundations of rock myth.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

So it's possible to play guitar-rock and NOT be rockist ? I'm still grappling with that rockism concept here.

Patrick, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

two weeks pass...
Heard the first LP with Bragg again today. Not bad. 'One By One' and 'Eisler on the Go' are great; and on the 2nd LP, 'Secret of the Sea' is smashing.

I'm glad that none of these people going on about 'rockism' mean it seriously.

the pinefox, Sunday, 13 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Some might, Reynard.

But, hey, it's all in good spirit.

(and I say that as someone who's indifferent to Bragg musically, and left the Tolpuddle rally early last year because his performance was resembling a self-parody and I couldn't take it so close up, but I'm glad he's around.)

Robin Carmody, Sunday, 13 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I only have Being There but they seem to be kind of like neither classic nor dud, just pleasant but some of their songs on the album seem to stick out, then a bland one comes along and so on and so forth. So in conclusion, I don't really know, sorry :(

achilles_last_stand, Sunday, 13 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

They just kind of...exist. From what I've heard of theirs, I have no desire to search out their music any more. They just kind of bored me.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot vs. Sgt Peppers. FITE!!!!

powertonevolume, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is going to do fantastically well in polls this year on underdog-principle. Ha ha the majors didnt want to release it because it is TOO GOOD for them. I'm not convinced - "Heavy Metal Drummer" is a lovely indie-disco single of the kind I didn't think American bands made these days, but the rest of it is flat and unengaging to me, sounding like a band whose vein is tapped.

Tom, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Actually, after they got dropped by Warner, there were about a billion majors vying for them--and they eventually signed with a major, Nonesuch. So much for conventional wisdom.

Mickey Black Eyes, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

No. I haven't listened to them though. I heard an Uncle Tupelo song called "Hungover Together" on a local college radio show five years ago and that was all I needed to hear. It was a bit earnest for my taste. The dj thought it was the most brilliant song ever and pronounced the name Too-PEE-low. I like Souled American a whole bunch though. And Califone, Giant Sand, PM Dawn, and Joan Jett.

dan, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Really like the first disc of Being There. The most unAmericana opening, the Sloanish love of pop through out of it. I like Summerteeth even mroe for a seperate set of reasons. Mostly based on the wierd sounds running through it and how long it took me to notice them. The synths, the listed version of Shot In The Arm versus the more rockist unlisted version seems to highlight why I like the band as opposed to why the critics cream their jeans. To a lesser extent its shows on the two leadoff tracks on Being There, Sunken Treasure the countrish version people seem to expect version versus Misunderstood.

And if there is an album with a meaning concerning 9/11 it is YHF.
Neil Young: Sorry I love you but more pre 9/11.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 2 March 2008 05:31 (sixteen years ago) link

ok for 2nd song "Walken" was AWESOME choice although I wasn't as blown away by the performance. uh, performance-wise.

the "Hate it Here" was totally inspiring , best-band-in-the-uni type stuff. The "Walken" was sort of "eh". which is kinda doubly weird becuz "walken" is the Little Feat-aping track that lends itself to such band solidarity. kinda seemed like the boys did not really grab that one like they could've. oh well. they sounded great.

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 19:39 (sixteen years ago) link

has there been a backlash to the backlash on Sky Blue Sky?

I think so. The disc got lukewarm reviews when it was released (overall not bad, tho; I think the disc has a 79 METASCORE), but then it turned up on lots of critic's Top 10 lists last year. And it deserved to be on those year-end lists, I think. Great, underrated album.

I hope Nels Cline stays with the band. Such a good, innovative guitarist.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 4 March 2008 19:47 (sixteen years ago) link

I have to say I resisted them for a long time- living in Chicago, it's sort of like too much to also listen to Wilco. Its like reading "Devil in the White City" on the CTA. And the boring people and middlebrow radio dj's of Chicago are just nuts for Wilco. But that's a stupid reason to avoid them, plus I ran out of music, and I gave in. So now I think they're great. Especially, She's a Jar, Jesus etc, and Handshake Drugs.

jsimp, Thursday, 6 March 2008 03:09 (sixteen years ago) link

I used to have a similar opinion to jsimp. Fuckin hated these guys. and yeah, largely due to the lunkhead north-side beer garden lunkhead idiocy of the whole think. But quite frankly I never even liked Uncle Tupelo back in the day. And then I remember when 'A.M.' came out and "Xrt" used to cane that ridic "Passenger Side" track, where Tweedy's all oh yeah dude I am totally ROLLING ANOTHER NUMBER. just sounded so fucking weak. ain't no Neil Young.

but then a couple things happened. Friend had a free extra ticket to one of the Vic shows that ended up on that 'Television' live CD or whatever its called. so I went. and I enjoyed myself. Seeing Nils Cline live was a revelation ( his first stint with the group .. he of course not on 'Ghost is Born' which those shows were supporting.) Also closing that show with the great Charles Wright cover did buy my respect

then 'Sky Blue Sky' came out and random samples trickled over to me .. random tracks where I heard some Cline guitar that appealed and perked my ears up .. then finally stumbling upon them guesting on 'Prairie Home Companion' (i am a fan) where they fucking ripped and i heard the ghost of my guy Cipollina in Cline's liquid flow.

Stumbled into a store a couple weeks later, noticed the 2lp of SBS on the wall, and bought it, fuck it. Really kinda fell in love with it. Still hate Tweedy's voice a lot of the time but the band is swell. Like Tweedy when he does Lennon on 'Hate It Here' and Lowell on 'Walken'. I dig the band.

but yeah, fuck the north side.

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 6 March 2008 04:50 (sixteen years ago) link

You guys are right. The worst thing about Wilco is their hardcore fans.

I have been known to troll around their discussion group boards and it is striking at the hate the addition of Nels Cline has inspired in many of them. It's almost as if they are saying "How dare they stop being so alt-country."

If you ask me, they didn't get good until they got weird(er).

Remove neil young-y and this is why I don't like them. Country rock in general is dull as dishwater (and Neil rarely is). When I first heard Summerteeth and Being There I was comparing them to the first few Old 97's albums + Uncle Tupelo/Son Volt (obv) + I dunno, the Jayhawks or something. And all those were exciting and passionate and interesting, where Wilco sounded like Muzak.

The stuff from their later period was eye-opening for me. There's a track that sounds like a Fall outtake!
