So, Dan is the only one in for Old Timers tomorrow?

I'll be sitting there all alone watching the businessmen gawking at boobs.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, speaking of pianos!

Kr won a $50 gift certificate to the Redhead Piano Bar downtown. I'm pretty stoked -- has anyone been there? (The only person who I can imagine having gone would be Eazy.) I want to get dressed up and drink cocktails.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:21 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm up for whatever.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Gangbang?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:23 (seventeen years ago) link

i want to get undressed and drink cocktails but that's kind of sad when you're by yourself.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:23 (seventeen years ago) link

I had several homemade gin and tonics in my boxers last night.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:24 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm in for Old Timer's. And Kevin, I will buy you an entire pitcher of PBR.

xp - I have been to the Redhead Piano Bar. It's loud, but kind of fun.

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:24 (seventeen years ago) link

I've been there, John! It's a lot of fun. You'll love it.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:25 (seventeen years ago) link

What happens in Korea... etc.

i'm not going to lie, and this is in no way a reflection on how i feel about any of you, but i'd rather see what's happening with the other thing. but maybe i will be there and no one has to buy me a pitcher of anything.

I think I can make it to OT's for a drink or two. I might get there early, since I leave work at 4. Anyone else there early?

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:54 (seventeen years ago) link

I would practically orgasm at the opportunity to put an en dash where it belonged.

Orgasms are overrated.

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:55 (seventeen years ago) link

There's food at Old Timers. Burgers, grilled cheese, onion rings, salad, shit like that.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:55 (seventeen years ago) link

The bar and its clientele (an odd mix of white- and blue-collar types) also harken back to days gone by, when it was more acceptable to chug down some alcohol during lunch.

Yeah, I hear about how people used to drink at lunch, but I don't think I've ever seen it. Wouldn't that seriously blow the rest of the afternoon? Unless your lunch drinks are "maintenance drinks," in which case you're just a drunk. Either way, not cool.

I haven't been to the Redhead but would like to go. Le Tigre in Madison sounds a lot like the Zebra Lounge on Division north of State - another good place for a future TTs.

Going to the Goodman with some folks, but may stop by after dinner on the way over.

I'm amazed that executive offices used to have sidebars.

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:58 (seventeen years ago) link

I have been known to have a beer at lunch and I just don't see how it's a big deal at all. Perhaps this is because of my restaurant background, but I'm sometimes surprised when I go out to lunch with people who enjoy drinking and they don't order a beer or wine with their meal.

At Catch I would say that around 1/4 of the corporate crowd had booze with lunch. Mostly wine, but there were regulars who would get the hard stuff.

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:59 (seventeen years ago) link

are you going for a practice run or whatever those are called, ez?

i'd be curious about your impressions of the poor tom character, if you have any.

Juulia (julesbdules), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 16:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, I think smoking in the office is kind of romantic and retro. As I've said before, I've seen it more than a couple times down here. Just yesterday I visited a priest who had a full ashtray in his office in the rectory.

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 16:02 (seventeen years ago) link

I used to work for the Canadians. If going out to eat for lunch, drinking was mandatory. Some of the big ups even had mini fridges in their offices, which led to the random beer being placed upon my desk at 10:30am.

God bless Canada.

molly d (mollyd), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 16:03 (seventeen years ago) link

More than one drink at lunch makes me sleepy.

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 16:04 (seventeen years ago) link

You always see it in old movies. Some guy walks into another guy's office in the middle of the day, and the guy says, "You want a drink?" and turns around to his fully stocked office bar and serves up some whiskey neat. Man, those were different times.

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 16:05 (seventeen years ago) link

If it's a lady, she gets sherry.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 16:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, alcohol before 6 pm still feels pretty transgressive to me.

Also, I think smoking in the office is kind of romantic and retro.

No, I had a boss at my old job who smoked in her office, and it was gross. Usually this sort of thing would be frowned upon, but the president of the company was a chain-smoker, so he couldn't exactly say no to others doing it, too.

Plus, the degree to which I romanticize smoking has a lot to do with smoking as a small pleasure that you make time for, rather than something you do unthinkingly while futzing around in Excel.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 16:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Ahhhh, smoking. It hasn't been as enjoyable this week, I think over-doing it on Friday combined with over-exerting my out-of-shape self on the weekends is killing the fun.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 16:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Orgasms are overrated.

But en dashes are underrated. It all works out.

I really think my Wittgenstein class last semester would have gone much better with martinis.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 16:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Man, those were different times.

my old boss in massachusetts had a mini bar in his office and we all kept bottles in our desks. plus there was a full bar in the break/storage room but that was because we used to host events and parties for vendors and clients every couple of months for a while.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 16:08 (seventeen years ago) link

I was at the gym at Tulane where I heard two men in their 50's talking about their kids. One man said that he went on a trip to Europe where he took his 15 year old daughter. When he asked her where she wanted to go in Paris, she immediately said "I want to see the suits." He explained that she meant that she wanted to go to the financial district and see the traders and brokers, etc. The father glowed, saying, "She didn't want to see any Bohemians; just the suits, 'show me the suits, Daddy.'"

Next they went to London and again she made it clear that all she really cared about was seeing "the suits."

The other man in the conversation remarked, "Wow. Good for her!"

Both men were impressed with

Also, Jay, I'm with you re smoking being a ritual that I enjoy because it's MINE, ALL MINE. Smoking at work, on the fly, would totes negate that.

Jesse, stop breaking up like that. It makes me think the aliens have landed in yr living room.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 16:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Where the hell did that fragment come from???

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 16:11 (seventeen years ago) link

I'd prefer if you walked into the boss's office and he said, "Wanna hit?" and pulled out a three foot glass bong, and then you sat around and did a few massive bong hits and got all chinese-eyed.
