In college, my roommate's ferret once took a pancake sized crap in my closet. Thus, all ferrets should die.

the dogs that NEVER made a move on me at all were the German Shepards and the Rotts

i love rottweilers. they have a lot of the same baggage as pit bulls, but the ones i've known have been amazingly kind, affectionate, and obedient.

(xpost)

hahahaha. yay ally.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 26 January 2004 19:48 (twenty years ago) link

Asian women like to bite, but they're okay once you train them.

oops (Oops), Monday, 26 January 2004 19:48 (twenty years ago) link

The most vicious, mean-minded dog I've ever known was a Dalmatian - savage to dogs and people alike, managed to maul a full-grown (more than full-grown: huge, bulky) labrador so bad she needed nine stitches.

The pitbulls, and bull terriers, I've known have never been anything but well-behaved and friendly. Plus bull terriers are supercute, with their little albino faces, awwwwww.

here is one of my friends' pit bulls, saved from a shelter. he has the ears cropped since he was originally bred a fighter(before he was rescued):

here he is savagely attacking some other friends whilst i was interviewing them:

CHOW CHOW ATTACK!

Seriously, people: you've got several pit bull owners on this thread explaining themselves, posting links, etc. The response they are getting is, in short, "You are an unfit human being and you disgust me". This is the most asinine bullshit I've ever read.

bnw was OTM waaaaay upthread vis a vis overblown reporting.

dyson, I'm sorry you got bit by a fucking pit bull but get over it, I've been bit by a whole helluva lot of dogs and I'm not going to blame the entire breeds, or species for that matter, for this. Hell, half of it I'd blame myself.

xpost properly bred and treated rotts and german shepards and the absolute nicest, sweetest animals I've ever encountered in my entire life. They are like enormous puppy dogs. I standfast by my assertion that smaller dogs are actually more likely to be vicious--short man syndrome, if you will. In my EXTREMELY LARGE experience with dogs, this has been the case.

Work would be so much better if I had a French bulldog companion. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 26 January 2004 19:53 (twenty years ago) link

Any brave souls want to take on Race and Class in relation to Pit-Bulls?

also, I'm giggling at this thought: Vicious St Bernard Attack!

Clearly we should put little booze casks around the necks of Pit-Bulls! Hell we should do that with our children!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 26 January 2004 19:53 (twenty years ago) link

(my point was just that they're bigger and stronger... )

luna (luna.c), Monday, 26 January 2004 19:54 (twenty years ago) link

Also, death to Pommeranians!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 26 January 2004 19:55 (twenty years ago) link

...and they're little dogs too!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 26 January 2004 19:56 (twenty years ago) link

and Alex's point was that if they DO attack, the damage will be greater than if most other breeds attack, so why would you want to take the risk? esp with a dog in which he sees no good qualities to compensate for that risk fair question.

oops (Oops), Monday, 26 January 2004 19:57 (twenty years ago) link

JD Salmon, does Dara still have her pitbulls?

And hey! Dalmations have an awful rep, though it is somewhat deserved. They are incredibly loyal animals, but very protective. ('ve had several and never had a problem myself, but they have gone for and tried to attack strangers and even friends - anyone that they thought was harming me (including a couple of unlucky boyfriends).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 26 January 2004 20:44 (twenty years ago) link

So Alex what are you trying to prove? That pits can bite people and when they do it can be very damaging? Nobody is arguing against that.

oops (Oops), Monday, 26 January 2004 20:44 (twenty years ago) link

Hey, slow down, dog-loving lynch mob. I'm just being the devil's advocate here. The question I asked at the top of thread was genuine -- I sincerely don't understand the appeal of these dogs, especially in light of the damage they can do and their notorious track record (and for the record, I don't believe that it's simply media hype ala "Summer of the Shark" etc.)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 26 January 2004 20:46 (twenty years ago) link

Maybe part of their appeal IS their ability to fuck-shit-up. A well-trained fuck-shit-up dog might seem very appealing in terms of personal protection and whatnot. I guess what I'm saying is, considering a well-trained pit is more likely to fuck up some would-be attacker's shit than their owners, well...where's the non-appeal in that?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 26 January 2004 20:49 (twenty years ago) link

Sick balls Chopper etc...

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 26 January 2004 20:50 (twenty years ago) link

Sharks can and do bite humans, but it's a pretty rare thing. Same with pitbulls. Overestimating the dangers of both is largely do to an availability heuristic.

There have been several owners here who explained why they love their pitbulls. What more do you want? What would make you understand?

oops (Oops), Monday, 26 January 2004 20:51 (twenty years ago) link

Why not simply invest in a pair of brass knuckles and a can of mace then? Cheaper, and you don't have to walk them.
