old re-conditioned 3 speed roadster from the common wheel; would maybe like something lighter and faster but have to log some more miles on this before I can justify the outlay :)

first 4.5 mi average 25.5 mph
mile 6-7 was me meandering through a neighborhood trying to find the landmark that was in fact located between mile 8-9, so this brought my avg down :(
ultimately 50 min for the whole loop, for an avg of 18mph. but fun as hell!

...well at least until when i got to the cool-down, not shown, where i blew out my rear tire. at least i was only a block from my house, but still :(
there's a skid patch worn clear through in one place, it's weird. i didn't think freewheel bikes could ~get skid patches

Didn't know this thread existed! I've been commuting back and forth to bike by work basically all summer, except for one week of really bad weather and another when I had my bike in the shop for a new handlebar stem. It's about 8 miles each way, but the trip home involves climbing a hellacious 1/2 mi. hill that rises about 107 feet from bottom to top. Anyway, by the end of this week I'll have logged my 500th commuting mile of the summer.
This morning, not one, but two people made right turns through my bike lane without yielding to me.

er, "by bike to work"
2/3 great ride today, 1/3 utterly horrible, depressing and demoralising. 31 miles out in the hills (followed by 3 miles ride home after I jumped a train at balloch in disgust). the wind on that last 10 miles was so demoralising at one point I got off my bike and had a wee bout of feeling sorry for myself. undulating roads w/no respite on the downhills cos everytime I tried to free wheel the wind stood me at a standstill. still, thanks to the in our time podcasts I got to listen to I now know a shitload about the sunni-shia split, the life of st. thomas aquinas and the history of jacobean tragedies.http://img.skitch.com/20090924-rgbxthxfef371d3ew2ejawd4fe.jpg

Did the Essex Roads 'Autumn Leaves' Sportive today. I did 94 miles which is the longest ride I've ever done (and slightly longer than it should have been due to a missing sign at one point - fortunately we came across some riders who'd made the same mistake and were retracing their route). My riding time was 5 hours 9 minutes - average speed of 18.2mph, which just goes to show the effect of riding with other people - not just drafting, but also the psychological impact of trying to keep up with people / trying to lead a group at a decent pace. My actual time (including stoppages) was just under six hours, but this includes at least 25 minutes waiting for a clubmate and helping him deal with a puncture. The weather today was absolutely fantastic - cloud-free sunny sky, but not scorching hot (probably low 20s).http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3219787 - this is more or less the route, but the start and finish is not quite in the right place

Sounds fantastic! I ended up spending this weekend riding in Hampshire and the New Forest with a friend. I was pretty glad she was slower than me as it meant we had a gorgeous, relaxing couple of days (average speed around 15mph). Got 88 miles done over the two days, and saw ponies, deer and a wild pig (!). What a perfect riding weekend.

Riding the new forest is so nice. One of my all time favourite rides is Salisbury to Lymington, which cuts right through the middle and has a lovely roll through the forest, takes in Beaulieu and Bucklers hard.
(Not having a train service out to the countryside is such a bind, I really miss how easy it is to construct rides like that with a cheap day return and an OS map)

Gbx, this is a question for you:
So I'm now going back and forth to chicago on a regular basis and want to get cheap bike for me and E to have there. Any advice other than craigslist and Yojimbo's?

Working Bikes rebuilds used bikes and sells 'em to fund their charitable work, which is sending bikes to Ghana and other developing countries
if yr looking for something new, then i can only recommend shops i happen to like: boulevard bikes (commuter-oriented, owner is the nicest), smart bike parts (25m from my old house, i'm friends with the staff, owner lent me a brand-new bike for one day so i could get around while visiting).
sometimes deals crop up on the chicago bike forum i still lurk, but it's likely to be flash track parts and not what you're looking for

so yesterday i stop for an iced coffee midride and who would be standing in front of me, the only other person in the shop dressed up in bike gear...?
noneother than Mr. Bobke Roll
tbh i didn't recognize him at first it wasn't until we were outside and i heard him talk i was like zomg! we ended up chatting about levi leipheimer who is hosting the ride we're both doing tomorrow. he was super bro-ish, no ego at all. gave me a fist bump as we rode off LMAO.

so about 45 miles into my 103 mile technically non-competitive ride but dudes are ROLLLLLING today, front tire puncture. upon inspection, tire is just shite... pock-marked and sliced TWICE through to the tread weaving. I think to myself "i know this tire was on its last legs, why didn't i swap it out before this ride" hindsight 20/20 &c.
LUCKILY, i was able to grab a spare tire from one of the guys on my team and throw it on in a decent amount of time (~6mins, the beading was tight like young man's anoos).
moral of the story: throw on some new tires if you're gonna try and kill it, alt.: ED OTM.
