I'd never heard of this before today, but these are horrible and very, very funny. Thanks for the original post Tuomas!

This is also the first time I have ever seen this, and it has totally made my post-long-weekend day worthwhile! (Not to get all "happy fantasy world" about shit)

Two new PBF strips, oh my.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:55 (eighteen years ago) link

I like that one Nine Inch Nails song about PBF, the one where he goes "WEE-A-BOO! TEH HAGN! THA FEEJOO! WEE-A-BOO! DANG ONG! YA NEEZ!"

I don't get last week's strip, someone please explain!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 5 June 2006 14:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Wacky/insane old guy who thinks he is a train engineer and has outfitted his van accordingly, featuring his dear little dolls as passengers having tea, decides to merrily end it all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 5 June 2006 14:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, I figured as much, but I don't really see the joke. Is it that the first panel makes us think he's a real train driver, and then the second and third one reveal the truth? If so, it's a pretty weak gag.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 5 June 2006 15:11 (seventeen years ago) link

The latest strip implies Gurewitch's well of humour is beginning to run dry.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 5 June 2006 15:13 (seventeen years ago) link

The new one (Woolves) is great.

xpost

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 5 June 2006 15:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Isn't referring to a plunge through the guardrail to certain death as a "shortcut" the joke?

nickn (nickn), Monday, 5 June 2006 23:53 (seventeen years ago) link

TRAINS CAN'T TAKE SHORTCUTS

gbx (skowly), Monday, 5 June 2006 23:58 (seventeen years ago) link

The slyest thing in the train comic is, upon reflection, the way the panels are framed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 00:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Hahah that black and white one is brilliant. Its kind of weird how Ned described him as Goreyesque - maybe he gets that a bit and was being cheeky about it?

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 00:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Does anyone get this one?

ihttp://70.86.201.113/imageserv2/stilltemporary/archive.html

(how do you locate the citypaper.com archives? Ive had to use the PBF temp server link which might not work)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 00:29 (seventeen years ago) link

oops wrong link:

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 00:31 (seventeen years ago) link

His jokes really aren't nearly as good as they used to be, but his draughtsmanship remains absolutely impeccable. I hope he finds his funny muse again soon.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 00:31 (seventeen years ago) link

xpost to Trayce - the cheeky villagers put the sleeping dragon's hand in water, and the valley floods with dragon piss.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 00:34 (seventeen years ago) link

OH! Now it totally makes sense. I thought they were shoving the whole dragon in a pot! *dur*

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 00:34 (seventeen years ago) link

I think it may also be a reference to the Yellow River.

chrisco (chrisco), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 00:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Some of the earlier ones are wonderfully bizarre, such as this:

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 00:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, I essentially meant what Ned and Tuomas had said above, and that the contrast between the child-like imagery and the dark subject matter is what constitutes the joke, but pbf does that so often it's kind of assumed, so this one seemed jokeless to Tuomas initially. I re-scanned it myself to see if I was missing something, but I think he just cranked this one out to meet a deadline, or something.

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 00:58 (seventeen years ago) link

I kind of adore the monkey-banana one.

The joke itself might not be that good, but the way "Bip" looks...

OK, something else entirely, but I don't get the final panel, I think. Or maybe there isn't supposed to be something funny at the end?
