anthony easton (anthony), Friday, 9 May 2003 17:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

How come your list only goes up to 40, Jess?

o. nate (onate), Friday, 9 May 2003 18:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

"but no Kurosawa"

there is:
"64. Ran,Kourosawa,Japan,1985"

"Rope is my fave Hitchcock too -- thought I was alone."

Mine too. My second favorite is either the Trouble with Harry or Rear Window

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 9 May 2003 18:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

i liked Hard Boiled better than the Killer.

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 9 May 2003 18:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

because anthony asked...Movies I Flat Out Don't Like On This List, That I've Seen:

Barry Lyndon
Safe (I only liked the second half)
Rosemary's Baby
Blow Up
Crash (pyewww, what the?!)
Sweet Sweetback's Badassss Song (the horror...)
Bamboozled (someone found this film remotely believable?)
The Night Porter
Gummo

And to be fair, Movies On The List I've Seen That Would Probably Make Mine:
Sunset Blvd.
Cabaret (possibly at the same place, too)
McCabe & Mrs. Miller (much lower on it, though)
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
Maltese Falcon
Intolerance (though I'm probably gonna skip silent films entirely if I ever make one)
Duck Soup
M
Your Friends And Neighbours
Manchurian Candidate
Jules Et Jim
Carrie

Honorary Mentions to Starship Troopers and Cleopatra, two films I really enjoyed but probably wouldn't make my list.

Raging Bull

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 9 May 2003 20:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

weird. That Raging bull at the bottom of my post should have been in the Don't Like group.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 9 May 2003 20:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

yay anthony!

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 9 May 2003 20:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

oh i crapped out in the end. those 40 should keep anyone happy for ages, tho. just watch them twice, and the top 10 three times.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 9 May 2003 21:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

the point of bamboozled was not the versmillitude, and thats what was signifigant about it, its darkness and over the top anger made it a genuine and frightening satire.

also, eddie murphy, eddie griffin, orlando jones, martin lawerence, queen latifa in bringing down the house-the minestrel show is alive and well.

anthony easton (anthony), Saturday, 10 May 2003 01:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

but see, my problem with Bamboozled is that the moments of good satire were actually the Tommy Hilnigger and malt liquor ads (also, Mos Def's militant rap group). The actual minstrel show didn't actually work satirically. That show-within-the-movie was so boring that I couldn't imagine anybody actually enjoying it. Lee thinks people would eat it up. Satire would be mocking something that actually exists (which he does in the great ad parodies), not creating a nightmare world with little relation to our own.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 10 May 2003 19:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

plus the characters were annoying, lots of pointless speechifying, usual Lee bullshit, movie won't end, etc. etc.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 10 May 2003 19:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

what Lee misses is that most of the successful blackface jokes, acts were remained successful when the blackface was removed (lots of comedy numbers and cartoons were re-done note-for-note minus blackface and are still enjoyed today). Part of what's offensive about blackface is how superfluous it was to the actual comedian's work. If he wanted Bamboozled to be stinging, he should have made the minstrel show actually sorta funny, which would have made the audience conflicted.

Hi,

Where is Roger Corman (Intruders, Little Shop of Horrors, ...), where is Jacques Tati (Jours de Fetes)?
