Or perhaps you are following the pop retro-future 60s mandate.
What are you wearing and what do you hope to get this fall?
I bought a brown curduroy skirt from H&M and brown fall-y stripey socks from Flying A but I don't have a shirt to go with them.
I am also thinking of white pseudo retro button-up calf-high boots from Williamsburg.

I hope to get some decent chocolate~ colored separates, I am thinking a corduroy skirt and a nice merino sweater. I need work shirts, possibly striped.

I really want a pleated A line skirt and tall semi-dressy boots.
We (NA & I) went to the mall last night (a new outdoor one near us) and I touched everything in J Crew and Anne Taylor Loft as NA shook his finger and his head. I'm supposed to be saving for our move. Blah. (But Chicago is cold! I need more warm stuff, right?)

I've taken to dying my hair multi-tonal autumn colors!
xpost: boots are U&K as well but then again I say that every season. I am still wearing my lace up midcalf boots but I'd like to get some more pairs. I wish I could wear such awesome clothes to work, I'm wearing a boring beigh crepe suit with a black silk sweater and black strappy sandals :(

I've tried on two silver skirts so far this year. Both on them looked like mock leather that was spray-painted with silver. Do all silver skirts look this way? The first one was at that second-hand store in W'burg, it was like $10, over-the-kneee. I tried it on to try and cop Ally's style, it fit but the zipper part was extra-long, it was kinda weird. Then there was another one at H&M: this one was short!!! I wasn't in love with it either, so I am still silver-less.
I need more curdurouys too. I bought a brown pair at the pop shop in MCR but they don't fit so well I don't think, baggy. Well, maybe I'll try them out again today. And when I say brown I mean brown. Actually, the cords are more rust/sand/ight brown.
― Mary (Mary), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)
There's a lot of good courderoy at the GAP right now, cos it's kind of thinner weight courderoy--I hate regular stuff, it makes me look kind of "huge assed" so to speak? I dunno everyone else looks fine in it though.
I think I am going to attempt to single-handed revive the seamed-stockings look.
I need more silver, H&M I come!!! It's ok if you cop my style cos I copped your tennis skirt.

― felicity (felicity), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)
I think I'd like a leather trenchcoat this year but they are tres pricey. xpost, I really don't like those overlong, belted sweaters at all. They look good on some people but they are just not my style at all. Clingy things on my backside=BIG HUGE NO NO.

I like tweed and 3/4 sleeve/bracelet sleeve vintage jackets, personally... and really need a cool pair of long gloves (winter gloves, just to be practical about it) - haven't found these yet. I guess I could use another good pencil skirt or two (pinstripes would be TOP), I am tall so they suit me better than the a-line ones.
Most of all I want, besides the gloves, some icy pastel colored sweaters, very very light, to wear with a couple of absurdly bright knitted scarves I've picked up in the past year. I'm lucky there are absolutely SUPER thrift shops around here.

Other recent purchases: some salvatore ferragamo mules that I have yet to wear, tons of knee socks, and a pewter flask. I have also decided to save a little and invest in a really nice, stylish winter coat that will not be used for work but only for play.

I think the mod thing is good for people who have always done mod, like our Hiromix-ish Carey, but I wonder about for mysef. As Felicity says, I suppose in mod-eration it is okay.
Sarah, re chocolate brown: I got boots last winter/spring that I thought were brown, but when I brought them home I realized they were chocolate brown. I think this is such a different color than regular brown (which has a billion different shades btw), it is so much closer to black, so dark, oily, and horse-y.
Belted cardigans: are we talking about the same tired things that have making the rounds for the past 5 or so years? I say pass, unless you already have one, and can just wrap it around yourself when the weather gets nippy. Or has there been a new innovation?
How do we feel about shawls? I just passed a girl wearing a brown plaid one. I think the key is to wear them asymetrically, something I am not artsy enough to do.
Curduroy pants: There could be a whole thread on this, really. The gap ones don't fit me that well, they are always too baggy in weird places. I like these stretchy ones from JJ or something. It's a weird brand but they come in every color and fit pretty well, if very snug. I want a pair in blue next. They also make jeans but I've never trained them on.

I believe in the Mary Timony way of the trouser. She always rocks the brightly colors pants as her trademark. So, Mary, I would say get those cordoroys in EVERY color.
I was just thinking about the shawl too and was going to invest soon. The asymetric placement to me screams messenger bag, but perhaps that is comforting.

Last weekend I went winter clothes shopping & got one of the adorable JCrew bi-colored scarves & found a cute little tan velvety coat in a little store in Belltown, too., with sort of striped trim in the same fabric & three rows of buttons down the front.
Gap cords don't really fit me, either- they always just look kind of weird. I haven't looked for cords from anyone else yet, though- I was going to get almondish colored ones, but need reconsider in light of the tan color of my coat. Head-to-toe pale brown colors looks a little odd. ;)

Oh, and I was in the Gap last week trying to find a pair of cheap yet decent jeans & they ARE cut funny, every single pair has the same weird fit at the hips even though I tried four or five styles. J Crew has some very nice cords, perhaps I'll pick up a red pair next..
Chocolate brown, I generally don't go there, it is a whole strange world trying to match that with the usual palette of stuff I wear and eh, I had to wear it for years against my will in Catholic school, that must be the root of the problem. ;)

No, I agree that dress is on the good side. I just hate spending hundreds of dollars on clothes I won't be able to wear again unless someone asks me to the prom.

The JCP boots just look like regular skinny-shaft knee high 4-inch heel stilettos but they came in great colors and on sale for only like $40!!! But none left :(

I have a somewhat significant birthday/anniversary/x-mas coming up and am thinking I will ask for a respectable watch as a present. Not Rolex or Cartier or anything, but something stainless steel (or whatever is a silvery color) and very classic and classy looking. I have no idea what sorts of brands are well made and classy. Any suggestions? Something in the $500 US range? Seriously, Rolex is the only watchmaker name I can think of. And that Tag Heur or whatever kind.

A Tag Heuer is a nice stainless steel watch in the range you want. In fact, I'm wearing one right now.

Now to show my fashion ignorance... right here, I have this fabulous top labelled 'Western Connection' that is several years old. I think mom bought it. It's dark purple/maroon, close fitting and has a criss-cross effect, like lots of small windows or something. I loved the thing but it grew a couple of holes some time ago. Anyone seen these for sale anywhere?

I shouldn't be buying anything since I just bought a pleated denim skirt and a Flashdance style blue off the shoulder sweatshirt today, plus replenished my supply of thigh highs finally (stockings not boots). Victoria's Secret is like the world's most heinous store, I think at least 4 different people (including a man!!) asked if I wanted a "free bra fitting". With navy blue.. can't you wear black? I think black is perfectly fine with navy blue. Sharp, even.
Barring that: bright fuschia! Seriously, you can wear lots of oddly colored accessories with navy blue which is awesome, so I say, fuschia (I have ballet flats in this color, it works, surprisingly).. Also, lemon yellow could be quite nice if yr wearing a white top.

I need to get a black dress for an event I'm going to be participating in in December, and I'm totally lost! I haven't worn a dress in about four years and I seriously need help here.
http://deanna.ladyinterference.com/ilx/melookingdown.jpg
The above is a good example of what my body type is like. (Is it any wonder that I've never even been inside a Victoria's Secret store? *laughs*) Anyway, I have to have a black dress, and I would really appreciate ideas on what you might think would look good. It has to have a slightly conservative sort of look to it because of where it's going to be held (inside a church), but I'd kinda like to make it have that certain something special to it.
Mary, why on Earth would you want a Target store in NYC? Targets are for people who don't have fashionable boutiques every half block or so, you know, like the people who reside in the middle of the country!

I know it's autumn when: I go to the nearest low-price utility clothes outlet (Suzy has weaned me off Primark and sent me packing off to Uniqlo) and purchase 3 new turtlenecks, in dark colours. (I prefer black or navy, but this year, I made the startling addition of sky blue!). I also got some utility non-jeans work-sort-of trousers in colours to match.
My major purchase this year was: A SUIT. It is black, with pinstripes.
HSA bought me a black leather suit-style jacket at a charity shop. It was £4. Can't fault that. Oh, and I also obtained some new boots, they're sort of very clunky Chelsea type boots, but a lot sturdier.
See! I can participate in this fashion thing! Hah!

I'm sorry, I'm not being rude, but WHY?!?!?
File under "things from the 80s that were REALLY UGLY the first time round, why would people want to wear them again?"
They are SO unflattering to the female leg - i.e. they hide the curves that make them look good, and render your lower leg a shapeless, fat and sausage-like tube.
The ONLY reason I could possibly see for wearing them is if you lived in a place with a draft, and yer ankles were unprotected. Apart from that - sheesh. I don't get it. Why not bring back spats?
Some fashions were abandonned as BAD IDEAS the first time round and should not be revived. Leg Warmers are one of them.
Sorry, Teeny, please don't take offense. I just really think they're a useless article of clothing.

Oh wait.
I never did legwarmers the first time around, and thought it would be fun. These are delicate little angora things though--not the chunky acrylic monstrosities of the 80s, but yeah, they're pretty useless. No offense taken!
― teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)
For example, if you had little tiny shoes (for wearing with stockings or pantyhose, rather than wearing with big thick chunky socks) then you could have the "look" of knee high socks without crushing your feet?
OK, I get it then. I'd wear them up, not scrunched.
I like knee socks, they keep yer legs warm when wearing shorts. Thigh socks (or proper stockings) are even better, but I can never get any long enough for my legs and fat enough for my thighs. :-(

But right now it is more urgent and key that I get a new cuddly stuffed animal which I can call WELLINGTON.

Hi, Kate!
Way upthread, Mary mentioned dark knee socks... Well, anyway, I bought a couple new pairs of new socks the other day and wore my dark brown ones with my dark brown skirt and they looked fabulous.
Today is very un-fall like as it's in the 70s outside, but it's freezing cold in the office, so whatever.

I have a pair of dark, dark purple legwarmers with a bit of silver sparkle; they are really tall.. they seem to work super w/these black pointy kitten heel shoes (pulled over the back of the shoe) and a short skirt, except I can't really wear such a thing to class and be taken at all seriously and the shoes are too posh to walk around all day in.. But actually the legwarmers are wonderful under jeans in New England winter weather, every extra layer helps.
I got a fashionable haircut today and I HATE it. Why do hair stylists always ignore what I ask for? I feel like a total jackass and have plans to get it toned down first thing tomorrow morning because if I have to spend the long weekend looking like I have a growing-out fashion mullet, it will be very unpleasant for all of my friends and anyone else who crosses my path, I think.

Beauty, Mott St. : Great spiked heels knee high white leather boots, but the price, $139, not so expenisve, but not super cheap either. Tops were like $49 for crappy little bits of polyester, nothing exciting. Coats were pretty good and fairly cheap.
My Collections, Bayard St: Worse than Beauty, but some nice cute shoes, especially if it was summer. Beauty also had some cute shoes with cut-out hearts. Otherwise, nothing...and not so cheap either...
Yan Yan Fashion, New Land Plaza (mall), Centre St.: On the second floor of this spiffy mall, really crowded, but good for a coat maybe, I saw a heavy Esprit duffel coat for like $50 so that was a little better. Hard to see the merch though.
New Bowery Merchants, Broadway: Jewellry store, cheap and fun just like Girl Props but without anyone suspecting you of shoplifting.
On East Broadway the fashion got more fashionable.
Xian Shi, E. Broadway: Cool stuff, weird designs, cut out Ts and asymetrical skirts. No prices though, so I fear the white girl mark-up.
Maple Tree Fashion, E. B'way: Even weirder stuff, but sized for stick people, not even Taiwanese people. Nice things though. Clubby.
Verdict: No way are you going to save money by shopping in these Chinatown stores. You might find something that not anyone has, but when its ugly, will you really be that pleased?
Pluses: Shoes, boots, sandals, coats.
Minuses: The rare cute/out-of-the-ordinary clothes were built for stick people.
I think I'll keep my eye on the second-story Beauty though, like I said, not cheap, but maybe eventually they'll get some nice merch in.
Others please weigh in with C-town experiences, share tips, trade secrets, etc.

The article was good because it gave me enough courage to go to this basement store further down on Mott that I've always wanted to go in but have been afraid to. They had cute-ish shoes too, but the woman followed me around the whole small store telling me how much everything was. Does this sales technique actually work?
I wonder if there are anything clothing boutiques in Koreatown...

On the recent Non-no cover the model is wearing the regulation Pringle argyle pink and balck print sweater as a dress along with black high heels and pulled up all the way black legwarmers. This refutes my earlier theory. But the back of the legwarmers are tucked into the heel of the shoe and the front come down over the middle front of the shoe. Maybe as the weather gets colder they are meant to be pulled all the way up.

Important: they also have boots--cheap boots--knee high plastic/vinyl shiny ones in white and black for $60 and thigh high leatherish ones in white and black for $70!!!
What's that little thing called that's fur/faux and you wear it around your shoulders? They have that too. Cute, with little strings with pom poms to tie.
When FR, my sister and I had brunch we saw a lovely lady with pink legwarmers over gray boots.
Do you agree with this maxim: If you were old enough to wear the trend the first time you shouldn't participate in the revival?

I haf not mentioned my ORANGE AND BLACK striped jumper with a little dangly bit round the neck. I haf not described it very well but I might be able to show you a picture (in quite a while if this thread is still going then). It is slightly indulging in the 80s ting but IT IS STILL GRATE.
Currently I am annoyed at Dorothy Perkins. IT IS WINTER and yet STILL they are continuing with the skirts that no-one with an ARSE can wear without revealing uncomplimentary amounts of gusset. They'd be nice if they had a sodding extra INCH. Grah and haven't we learnt how to knit things in non-itchy gabric yet?

As it gets colder, it would seem counter-intuitive to warm one's legs, while leaving the little space of foot exposed by the shoe bare. What type of under-legwarmer garments are recommended? Are fishnets too distracting?

So I went shopping and then realized that my quest for dress pants is kind of dumb since I'm quitting my job and I NEVER wear dress pants outside work. So instead I bought some new jeans and a dusty pink paisley western-style shirt and a grey ribbed snap front cardigan and Christmassy lingerie, it was very exciting. I have a serious problem, I need to stop going out shopping.
What I wanted to buy though was this:

I never tuck stuff in either and used to not wear waist-length stuff 'cause it looked too short.. and then.. discovered why wearing belts actually helped.

With the beige cord skirt - I think some kind of 70's preppy shirt (US people, I mean a dress shirt I think), maybe with a woolen tank top with a v-neck over the top.

Tee hee I BOUGHT NEW SHOES last night. They are a little too big and caused my feet to hurt (I have wide feet, they are pointy) so I took them off and walked down Upper Street with a mere casing of HOSE to protect my feet from the gentrified pavements of Islington. They are MONOCHROME and have a WHITE POINT, a greyish stripe going round the shoe and a BLACK TOPPING. They are like the other shoes I have in that design except they are ORANGE PURPLE AND YELLOW!
Comment from resident foot fetishist: "they look very mod, I can imagine you dancing to the Jam yeah yeah *sings town called malice*".
I do not want slouch boots. However I do want boots that are furry on the inside! They may have a fur trim on the top but boots which are entirely furry on the outside just make me think too much Jordan.

This ensemble is kickin'. I'd like one like it when it becomes winter.

I have officially let fall fashion pass me by. What's a girl to do when the temperature is 75 one day, and 58 the next? I have hardly had the opportunity to wear my brown argyle knee socks. Should we start a Winter Wonderland Woman (and Men) thread soon, or would that be jumping the gun? Perhaps we should wait till after Halloween?

New H&M purchases: red mod miniskirt with white button, white mod miniskirt with orange buttons and zipper, black pac-manish button down shirt, faux fur scarf, bright orange wig.
I was at Kiwi this weekend in Park Slope and they had the greatest knit gloves. They were half glove, half mittenlet. A light colored glove covered by a black mittenlet on the outside. Double the warmth!

Honestly!
I decided that my new look was going to be "Physics Professors Of The Seventies" (I even found a lovely pair of BROWN CORDUROY TRAINERS in Covent Garden, but alas, the shop didn't do half sizes, major bummer) until Suzy burst my bubble by pointing out that people would think I was attempting to "do a Jarvis" - god forbid anyone should think that!
My new style icon is Carl Sagan, not some britpop fop. Ugh.
Anyway, the point being - go get thee to a brown polo neck, Pink!

What you should do is make sure that you get a stretchy and formfitting enough turtleneck - such as the Uniqlo cotton turtlenecks - which will fit your form well enough to make you look non-stumpy!
Heck, my mum has spent years telling me that I should not wear turtlenecks because I have "no neck" - but you know what? Screw her! I think a turtleneck with a pendant or necklace actually makes me look like I have a longer neck! So there!

ally-- i swear by club monaco for long trousers in normal people (read: bigger than size 2 in zara) sizes. i think they also do free hemming if you need it. if you happen to be in canada, the prices are the same in canadian dollars as american, so i always used to stock up when i visited toronto. or sometimes went on a special ambassador bridge trip to the mall in windsor to go to CM.
i can't believe i'm giving ANYONE fashion advice today. i'm such a stereotypical american slob today-- jeans and dark trainers, purple button down shirt and black cardigan from thrift store. my excuse is that i couldn't sleep last night, and i'm SO TIRED today.

* It looks as though the Pradaesque alien-nerd shoe craze is finally dying down a little. Maybe ppl just don't wear them as much in London. (You know, the ones with the big wedge in the back and a separate, slimmer wedge for the front part of the foot. Often the sole will do a curve-up thing in the front, almost over the top of the toe.)
* Another women's style I hate in London: furry-top calf-length boots, often with straps and buckles! Girls, if it's a Nordic look you're rocking, don't wear a short skirt with this as is your wont! It just makes your feet look clompy and your legs look wobbly. Wobbly caribou legs aren't sexy, okay?
* People, Starry Sarah has a t-shirt that looks exactly like Eddie Van Halen's GUITAR! Beat that!

I agree with Kate and the other defenders of black & brown. I don't believe in following rules so literally. While it is true that the brown + black recalls black & tan riding boots, black and tan foxhounds, and other emblems of country life, conveniently "Country Life" is a ~trend for fall. Perhaps now is a good time to mention tweed.

Speaking of brown boots, I think they are the way to go. Last Sat. night the East Village was filled with woman tottering around in black knee-high heeled boots with just over-the-knee skirts. At the risk of sounding like Traitor Hand, I would suggest, choose other colors! Or other outfits! Everyone looked like an '80s suburban housewife out for a night on the town aspiring to look like a '70s Jane Fonda. Does that make any sense? Or am I just jealous because I don't have black knee-high high boots? This descension into cattiness is officially over. Note: this has nothing to do with ILX woman who may wear black knee-high boots. I am sure that you would not wear them in this office-casual pedestrian style.

The Japanese girls in my magazine are wearing these tan/light brown calf-high or knee-high boots with a stacked heel. I like my choco-brown boots, but these girls seem so happy in their tan boots. It just brightens up their whole outfit, not like those funeral black boots:) I know I too could be happy if I could just get those light brown boots...They seem kinda loose, but maybe the girls legs are just swimming around in them....

i think your tights question is a good one for fall, it's apparently all about the colorful and patterned and textured tights, although it's really confusing what to wear with what.
what are you wearing as a top? plain or patterened? i'd probably go with the plain tights, but then again i'm not a huge fashion risk-taker these days. then again, mixing patterns *is* supposed to be big this fall...

Do you think that wearing pretty much all white is too "angelic"? And more importantly does a white with black plaid kilt and white turtleneck sweater and fishnets "go" with red stiletto knee high boots?

i need to impress a european girl by wearing a nice scarf.
it needs to go with a dark blue jacket and a brown cordouroy jacket.
i am in the world capitol of scarves, so any color or combination of colors will be easy to come by, i think.
so what colors? what sizes? what fabrics?
also, can someone point me to a easy-to-understand demonstration of how to best and most fashionably wear a scarf? so far i've been getting by with an indifferent wrap-around.
sincerely,
frost in translation

Felicity, I like those scarecrow models. No, my tippet is much longer than that, I fear it is not exactly a tippet. It is like a cape for your shoulders. I searched everywhere but cannot find an approximate picture. Perhaps I can show you at Hotel Venus.

I think you have to wrap it round your neck and tuck in to your jacket though. Paris is cold!

I still have my high-heeled black suede knee high boots from last year. I'd like some taller boots though. I really have a hard time buying anything other than black. Occasionally a red top or something. but that's it.
so therefore I am useless in this thread.
also, what is this "fall" you speak of?

Now that I have ladylike shoes, perhaps I need a ladylike purse? (Or at least one that doesn't have Hello Kitty on it.) We saw a great one on lower Lafayette that was bright red with 4 parallel silver strap buckles and fairly reasonable; I thought it was very s/m but F. didn't agree. I'm not sure if red is the color though for my first purse purchase -- I seem to be wearing a lot of pastels... What do you reckon, black noir?
― Mary (Mary), Monday, 27 October 2003 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)
Anyway, I think Anna has described the perfect ladylike handbag somewhere. My idea is that it is one-strapped but of course there are so many wonderful varietals.

Mary, I've been in love with black purses with silver buckles on them recently. I have a cute tiny nine west one that barely holds my ipod & phone, but it has nice fake buckles where the straps attach. I have a bigger one that's useful for when I have to cart my laptop around, but it's not as adorable, so I tend not to use it unless its needed.

And then I went on a massive binge at UNIQLO, which is the best clothing shop in the world, ever. You know that I utterly loathe all that is edgy and trendy and stylish and Japanese Design Student, etc. etc. but UNIQLO is great because you know that its clothes are not made by designers - they are ENGINEERED BY JAPANESE COMFORT TECHNICIANS!!! With lab coats and clip-boards.
I bought *two* pairs of brown corduroy trousers to match my new shoes. And a turquoise blue poloneck and a Carl Sagan style burgundy turtleneck. And a very cute little black corduroy skirt. I put on a little fashion show for HSA when I came home, and he went "Zoiks! to the Mystery Machine!" so I think I'm going in the right direction.
Are parkas played out? Because I think I want one, if I can get the stink of Camden out of it. (Though I am getting more and more tempted by an RAF bomber jacket. But that might be NS-inspired WWII Lunacy. What do you think?)

You know what I think is sexy? That small patch of skin "accidentally" displayed between a V-style coat and a thin scarf worn around the neck, when a high neck shirt is not being worn. Stiff wool lapels plus soft fleecy muffler against a bare block of collar bone = k-rown. Sexy is about subtle, not sticking your crothless panties in somebody's face.

― Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)
Gareth is categorically WRONG on everything (except brown, I've come around on the brown front) so I disregard his wincing at Parkas. I've wanted one for over ten years at this point, so I probably should get one. Well, it's that or the RAF bomber jacket, and I think the sexual frisson of that is a bit too worrying.
Isn't refusing to wear something just because it's fashionable just as silly as wearing something *just* because it's fashionable?
I second the V-neck love. I used to have the most perfect V-neck sweater in the world, it was inherited from my mum, it was a Marks & Sparks thing, and I've never found its like. The Dior black v-neck came close, as it was sofffft, but it's a bit too thick to wear under jackets. I'm really digging the UNIQLO angora turtlenecks, so I might go back and see if I can get a v-neck in the same material. Sigh.
I need to refresh my scarf collection, my current ones are getting very ragged. And my brother nicked my Brideshead Revisited scarf. :-(

ok, question about a fall fashion risk...i was in dorothy perkins on saturday and got a few things, including a silver miniskirt. it's kind of pleather, not shiny exactly, more of a pewter silver. (you wouldn't know it to see me on a normal day, but i'm a bit of a magpie, attracted to sparkly and shiny things.) anyway, is this just too much? it looks retro-future to me, which i like. i planned on wearing it with black tights and a ribbed black turtleneck and black ballet flats or if i'm feeling really shiny, my silver prada shoes that i still love. thoughts?

Cashmere Cardigans? Mary, I must investigate this! (Though if I bring one more cardigan into the house, I fear HSA will start burning them, because I have an awful habit of putting them on in the evening and then leaving them strewn around the house when I go to bed, then the next evening, I can't find the one I had before, so I select a new cardigan, until soon, the entire house is awash with strewn cardigans.)
(Awash with strewn cardigans, does that sound like a Smiths lyric or what?)

My sis told me that less endowed woman should not wear V-necks that point straight to their lack of extremeties. Her source? Trinnie and Susanna. Their quote: "No one wants to look at a bony chest."
― Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)
It is very difficult! Sometimes I make huge boatnecks out of my sweatshirts so that they have my shoulders mostly out but really to find a nice boatneck is a pain in the ass. I saw some at Urban Outfitters so I ran in only to discover they had shirring on the sleeves arrrrgh. I don't understand why this is so difficult. The last Victoria's Secret catalog had a lot of boatnecks and off-shoulders tops, IIRC.
Mary, Trinnie and Susanna are full of shit because part of my problem is entirely my bosoms in wearing a non-plunging v-necked shirt. It just looks totally off, I instantly gain like 10lbs. I think they look much nicer on girls who are less-than-average in the chest area.
I have just purchased BOOTS! They are knee-high tan suede with chunky wood heels and they are fur-lined and have fur trim! What will Mr. BlackwellTracer Hand say?!

RudenessThe large proportion of reader comments are helpful, coherent, and civil. For a sampling of such comments, go to the reader comments page. HBC has, however received some quite amazing comments from readers. One classic example was this one.
"I was searching for boys Victorian hats so i went on your website! I scrolled down to the hats and caps section and thought how crap! you didn't have any selection of hats or even any hats with had when they were made, where it is from or what the hat (s) were used for! So now i dont have any boys hats for my homework so please think about what i have wrote and in the future can you change your site and even maybe put woman's and men's hats! witch are Victorian!"
We will ignore the misspelled words and the poor grammar as we make enough of those mistakes ourselves. We are apauled, however, with the crudness of the message and the fact that the reader would complain about the lack of information on our site. She blames HBC because she was unable to complete her school assignment! Actually there is a great deal of information about both caps and hats, if thge reader had sent a civil request, we would have helped her find it. The rudeness in complaining that our site does nor satisfy all her needs is startling. Our resonse is simply to ignore such messages as the person who sent is no doubt has no idea of how rude she was and probably could care less.

I haven't done it personally, but yes I approve, especially if the pants are a little baggy, and if the boots are loose and calf-high.
Some boot history here (I think Carey's already been to this site!) and yes, the pairing of the white boots with aqua is marv.

I know, isn't it odd how the label gremlins get in there and make the size labels all wrong? I refuse to give in to their mischief.
Ally, I think you should wear your furry Caribou boots over leggings and under a cowlneck sweater for a crazed jamais-ski look.

I am really drawn to the red boots at Hotel Venus (they added red to the black and white that I told you about earlier, but I am having enough problems dressing around my white boots that I don't think now is the time to add red into the equation. However, I could look like this.

I have very thick ankle socks which are about an inch to two inch longer than the boots, which perfectly cover that area of the leg skin which gets cold if your trousers ride up. Though my favourite look is thick black tights and Chelsea boots - in which case you have to have little tiny socklets which just cover the foot so the boots don't tear up your tights!

Ok ok my take on the outfit is "ballet audience member from the 50s got lost". It is a black sparkly top complete with MAHOUSIVE swishy black satin skirt with pale pink edging and a pink BOW round the waist topped off with a rather smashing pale pink cardigan with silver sparkly bits on the top! If I had had enough time to find pale pink shoes I would have worn them as well but in the end I went for my comfy but boring black shoes. The skirt spins out rather impressively whenever one turns and when made to SPIN! round on the dancefloor flares out so much than I am aph34r3d people could see me PANTS. Isabel's skirt was a lot better but then again that is to be expected, hurrah for big skirts!

The only ones that don't have this are Aldo because Aldo is scientifically proven to be made for people who have apparently suffered foot binding torture their entire lives to prevent normal width growth (in most brands normal width is actually slightly wide on me; Aldos OTOH have caused me blisters that resemble gangrenous sores that take weeks to heal).
haha xpost I will gladly come over! My problem is I have so much clothes that I just automatically hate everything I wear, nothing seems special at all. It's overwhelming--maybe I should just start offering up items on ILX?? Instead of selling them at a store?

― teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)
But your problem is a bit different teeny in that you are actually quite thin (I'm not and I think the fact that I have a difficult time finding knee-high boots--don't have this issue with midcalf or overtheknee boots--that fit is evidence of that whole "bigging up of the sizes" phenom that is going on in the clothing industry as well). So yeah, you can take them to a place and they will take in your shoes--taking in is a lot more reliable and easy than the stretching out so it should be ok! You could ask the people at the store for recommendations.

Marks and Spencer do both half sizes and leather zip-up boots which fit me, thank goodness. Magic and Sparkle indeed.
Now, what really gets on my nerves is paying £9.50 to get my boots resoled and heeled after I've only worn them seven times (and the only walking I do is to and from the bus stop). They cost £55 so after 40.5 wearings I've paid as much for repairs as I paid for the boots. Grrr.
― Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)
If we're going to be doing this, perhaps they could start making negative sizes? Otherwise I have to get a lot of skirts & pants taken in so that they don't threaten to slide off my hips- DKNY is the worst, I love their skirts, but they only make a "2" for the smallest size, which hasn't a hope of really fitting me. If I flip through my closet, my high school skirts -when I weighed less than I do know- are 6s. And now I'm heavier & into 2s and 0s. Argh.
This evening, however, I'm off to Old Navy to restock up on Tshirts- I love white ones, but I always spill coffee on them, and then forget to wash them right away when I get home. I wish there was some service I could sign up for, have 4 white tshirts delivered here every 3 or 4 months.

So I got this shirt in the mail and it was everything I wanted it to be. The material is very soft and thin (very sexy with nothing underneath). The color is a bit striking but will be a good splash of color in my winter wardrobe. I'll likely be wearing it under band girly tees. The cut and sizing is perfect, in fact maybe a bit too slim since it exaggerates my skinny arms. And the arms are gloriously long!

Question: what do I do with all of these reasonably nice, very conservative (read: Brooks Brothers) button-down oxfords now that I have decided that I henceforth refuse to tuck anything in? Can I wear them with the tail out under a sweater, paired with my usual wool slacks? This is for work, mind you. I just hate to not make use of decent clothing I already own. Other ideas on how to wear oxfords in a non-tucked-in fashion welcomed.

Re: the oxford shirts: if you're long-waisted, they can look okay with a really thin black (or other colour, of course) belt. (If you're short-waisted, however, (like me), this just makes you look weird.) I think those shirts are just meant for tucking, especially if they have proper tails rather than the cropped straight across and tailored-at-the-waist look of shirts that are often meant not to be tucked anyway.
I have no money, but I still like to talk about fashion even though it pains me a bit, especially the shoe stuff. But whatevah, go on please.

My next question: will I be sorry if I spend a bunch of money on a red coat? I currently have only a boring black wool pea coat and a lovely vintage black lambswool coat (the curly sheepy kind) with a white curly sheepy collar, which I'm pretty sure I'm not cool enough to pull off. But I like the idea of a red coat.
Perhaps I should have posted to the "I need a coat" thread!

I say, spend the $$ on a red coat. I went and dropped like $180 on a coral orange-pink pea coat last fall, after my favorite black one got stolen. It stressed me at first because I thought, what in the world matches coral? But then I realized all the bright colors I wore that didn't match were sweaters and tops, while I usually wore black/denim/grey trousers or patterned skirts in muted colors, so everything that showed with the coat on, matched.
I love J Crew, I admit it.. Hopefully I don't look too prep school in the stuff 'cause I match it up with weird things I thrifted. But the sweaters are super good quality. I just got a new catalog and I can't really afford much of anything but I might buy a cardigan or two anyhow. I want more cobalt blue stuff now.

No, I bought a red pea coat two winters ago and I love it dearly. As mentioned upthread most things you wear on your lower half are fairly neutral. Anyway, if you have another coat you can alternate.
(Lauren, if you see any boots in a UK size 4 for under, say, [has exchange rate breakdown] $40 (?) let me know and I will give you the money and then cocktails as a carrier's charge. - I'm kind of joking, I think I just mean if you run into them or they fall from the sky with 'Anna will love us' pinned to them or something.)

probably not, especially taking into account the fact that you have several black coats. go for it. i almost bought an amazing red wool coat (lined with heavy pale pink silk) last autumn when i just got a big freelance check, but i talked myself out of it because of practicality issues. it may have been the right thing to save the $$, but i still regret not having that coat.

Pink, now about a jacket and a skirt? Or a trouser suit? At least with seperates you can wear them later. The last wedding I went to I wore a vintage beaded cocktail dress I bought in a moment of dress-lust madness at Camden market and hadn't really had the chance to wear. The previous one I bought a cream tailored jacket and a pink chiffon skirt and took a gold bag and sandals I already owned. I still wear the jacket with jeans and I wear the skirt as a top. (It's floppy enough to pull up and had an elasticated waist.)

Maybe try Oasis? Their suiting stuff is always well cut for the price and they have that new section where they've taken vintage patterns and re-worked them for more modern bodies (lower waists, more room around the ribs, no need for mad pointy bras etc).
x-post with Liz, that sounds lovely. Yes, I forget Pink, both you and Liz are more well-endowed in the bossom area than me. Go v-neck.

Went shopping for the first time in ages with a budget of £40 and between Uniqlo (3/4 length pearl-grey shirt and anti-fishnet tights) and H&M (skirt with patterns like Clarice Cliff homeware, black and red tops) managed to have change left over. And in other good news, my grandmother's black shirtwaist dress with the cute panels and 3/4 sleeves (c. 1959) looks great with the yellow kitten-heeled stripper's shoes. It would look fantastic with a tulle slip or something.
Yesterday at work I tweaked a press release for someone and "won" a cashmere sweater when the samples come in. Boss keeping me very sweet indeed.

Everything upstairs at Topshop now is BRILLIANT by the way and I want it all. Lovely greens and burgundies that remind me that I haven't been HUNTING GAME for a while.
Man why don't *I* know anyone who is getting married? Not that I have anything to wear. Ugh I am so going to give away half my clothes at some point I am so fed up with everything I own apart from my green jumper which am ace and er, my brown short sleeved jumper which also am ace and er, oh, sorry, I just got distracted by a potted plant.
I also need plain black TROUSIS for werk but with my lardy BELLY but my short STATURE this is difficult innit. Perhaps MARKS AND SPENCER will save me.

I may be wanting some emerald green shoes (possibly some form of Mary Jane or a correct deadstock '50s stiletto or a rounded toe). If you want to know why you're getting these colour choices right now, check out the cinematography of Far From Heaven.
Hahaha if you want to know what colour of aged lace/chiffon nightie-top to wear, look down your shirt and I guarantee the best colour will match your uhh complexion (but it is true). This type of top looks great with 'aged black'/sepia skirt in most fabrics you'd choose to go with that.

I thought it would be all cold and autumnal on my walk from Waterloo station to wardour Street, but by the time I got to Charing X station I had to take my jacket off and made the rest of the journey in my t-shirt. I just bought a vintage 50's periwinkle cardigan with 3/4 sleeves & a tapestry-fabric vintage fitted coat. Also thrifted this ridiculous silk cobalt blue cropped blouse with a faint snakeskin print - 80's Ungaro. It's quite silly, I am debating if I'll ever wear it.
I don't care if tweed is verging on played out, I love the stuff.. plus there seem to be massive & excellent vintage tweed stockpiles in every thrift, it being New England. Am just waiting for chilly weather so I can bust out this brilliant houndstooth 50's fitted jacket in cream/maroon/dark green/navy.

so, saks cle is "re-stocking" their pdc jeans right now. iirc the nyc saks sells them for around $150-80, which is cheaper than i've seen them in london, and if you hit a clearance you can get them for around $100. speaking of clearance.. i got myself a pleated silk tahari skirt on deep discount. the pattern is sick: hot pink, black, white, gray; peter max meets liberty. also, a black fitted lily pulizter polo shirt for $30.

How long have I got to mull over the PDCs? If they do them at Koh S then I can get them for £110 or thereabouts - they were $140 last year at Heartbreaker in Mpls (added bonus no sales tax of any kind on clothes there). Also don't you hate terms like re-stocking, just makes me wanna go THEN WHERE ARE THEY? Boss yesterday said the Americans invented the word 'apparel' to avoid having to talk about clothes in even the most tenuously sexual way, hates dealing with them presswise.

It's true, 3 pairs of John Varvatos Converse trainers had been in and out when I was home in July as sold by stylists, which the nice lady assisant in a wacky blue/white/purple patterned chiffon dress and black leggings informed me. Almost picked up the last pair (essentially slip-on Vans in black leather), but sadly gave them up after finding they were a size too large (12). I preferred the tweed material version anyway, though I never saw it outside of Arena mag.
It's funny that I mention this while wearing the Sharpeye trousers I bought on that trip to work today. Love MVE.

(There is a girl on the bus every morning (sometimes with a violin case!) and a sparkly record bag. She has hennaed hair and always wears this lovely embroidered goldish brown silk jacket. She looks fantastic - very original as well as stylish.
I would like to ask her to play violin in my band but that would be weird and stalkerish. Is it possible to have a non-sexual crush on a stranger?
― Luminiferous Aether (kate), Friday, 9 September 2005 07:01 (twenty years ago)
Ed, grey cardies are a Helmut Lang/Martin Margiela staple and there is a LOT of grey about because Fashion dictates we are all supposed to be about the black beatnik clothes this year and grey mixes well. Oh and all the Hedi Slimane for Dior ("informed" by Pete Doherty) probably has a lot of this too.
Mary, The (original) Parent Trap was on here over the last week or so...or is the look you're after a bit more Tiger Bay?

Belgium has been a centre for minimalist/deconstructionist/grey/black fashion since at least the mid '80s. However if you really want to go to town shopping in Belgium your town is ANTWERP.

(Also I only assume it was a violin - could have been anything, really, as it was one of those new square cases. It is the cheesiest thing on earth to ask "what's in the case, hur hur hur" as it happens often enough to me to be annoying. It is my tool of the trade, not an accessory or conversation piece)

Where can I find some nice tops to wear under my collection of vintage suit jackets? I can't ever find much of anything, they either look cheap, bad cut, ugly patterns or colors, or look too much like camisoles (can't wear that to work). Something in clear green or a nice silver grey would be top.
Also, is it worth having a Lanvin blouse repaired so I can wear it? It is only a department store blouse, but I like the color and the little pattern. Then I started to worry, is it a bad idea to wear this because it's just a cheap thing with a logo, even if I like it.
― dar1a g (daria g), Saturday, 10 September 2005 05:59 (twenty years ago)
I take it you need to have SLEEVES at work, with the tops in question?
― suzy (suzy), Saturday, 10 September 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

― dar1a g (daria g), Saturday, 10 September 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)
Can't stand lace either! AT LAST, UNEQUIVOCAL PROOF that I am not, never was GOTH. The whole tops scene seems to be moving away from those daggy, sparkly tops worn with (expensive) jeans and (more expensive) stilettoes and into something more minimalist and/or preppy (or those blouses). Take your cues from the vintage pieces you've got and also the references posed by the A/W collections. My workplace feels that Tippi Hedren is the inspiration for a lot of it.

xpost.. Ann Taylor, oh how I hate. I think they issue you an Ann Taylor uniform if you move to Arlington. Yes please let's have all the 25 year olds dressing like they are 55! With the square toe fake Prada shoes that were vaguely fashionable during the Clinton administration! I have one blouse from AT but it is black with a tie neck and I thrifted it, anyway. (Just got the fall wardrobe ready, the local dry cleaners have made so much $$$ off my vintage/thrift habits.)
I do have a number of bow/ruffley blouses and things in black, that's the main thing I look for in thrifts & snap them up whenever I find a good one. It's still a pain - I am tall but wear a small size, so either the sleeves are too short or the blouse is wayyy too big. Probably going to just have some of them hemmed to elbow-length. I tried removing the sleeves from this soft red ruffle collar blouse, and I think I've pretty much wrecked it, unfortunately.

I need a good suit. I'm having a wardrobe issue because I have a job interview later this week but my closet has every color so long as it's black, and I have trouble putting together something that won't look too morbid.
So I am following the lots-of-black mandate and the tall boots, but I always wear that kind of stuff.. And still wearing the menswear tweeds and checks, but again, that's just my cup of tea anyway. I have some full knee length skirts (camel, black, paisley on black). I need to pick up a bright pair of shoes, maybe red, or green. The chunky jewelry is neat, there's an antique mall in my hometown with tons of big ornate chunky chain link bracelets for $20 and less (because nobody here buys them) so I'll probably get one.
I also really want a big old gothic cross necklace, you know, the square ones? I was searching for that this spring on the eBay but never managed to find one that suited me.

AAAAARGH please lets all never mention Arlington again. I have the misfortune of living in Rosslyn, which is like some frightening yuppie/corporate version of Stepford. I am actively creeped out by this area, and you're right about the complete lack of fashion sense. It seems to be true for most of DC to be honest, there's the daytime outfit (badly fitted suit or khakis and a polo for men/shapeless Ann Taylor gear for women WHO ALL WEAR BEAT UP FLIP FLOPS TO WORK RECENTLY WTF?) and the nighttime outfit (khakis or jeans with a striped shirt purchased at Express for Men for dudes/imitation of Jersey Trash outfit for ladies). It makes me want to start slapping people.
Maybe I should just start a separate thread for DC shopping because I think part of the problem is that there is a really pathetic selection of shopping options around here unless you're really dedicated to searching (I haven't been).
I need new shoes. I do NOT wear flats. Period. I cannot walk in them. People on the board who have met me might have noticed this already. A lot of stores seem to be carrying a lot of flats. Make me recommendations! Boots and non-sandals would be appreciated since I've done got about 50 pairs of sandals.
― Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)
DC shopping is bad. I like thrifting in Old Town Alexandria, but that probably only worked out well for me the year I worked there, because I could go check the shops every couple days on lunch break. Also the secret thrift downstairs next door to the National Cathedral, only open limited hours. Otherwise it's H&M, Zara, etc. in Georgetown. I'm broke anyway. There's a Filene's basement downtown on Connecticut where occasionally you find something interesting but most of the stuff is awful. Way up Wisconsin Ave by the AU metro is a posh department store (the Saks is further up near Bethesda but I've never been) and some other big chain stores, nothing spectacular.
― dar1a g (daria g), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)
Hahaha I need to stop, this is derail.
I haven't gone down to Old Town besides to go to the Trader Joe's actually, I've been meaning to go down there to go shopping but, uh, yeah no $$$$$. I basically just do the H&M, Club Monaco and REALLY OCCASIONALLY stop by Hecht's, because it is right next to where I work. Sometimes they have some usable things, I just bought a chocolate suede assymetric skirt there and a camel colored beaded cardigan and a Michael Kors gray and blue argyle sweater on sale. Usually they're kind of crap. Why not just call them all Macy's or Lord & Taylor, I mean they make you think you might get different options because they have different names but they're identical twins.
I am intrigued by the secret thrift.
I scored big time in Chapel Hill (haha I had to go to another state to get big time shopping scores), two Lilly Pulitzer dresses at like 70% off and my wedding dress, a Nicole Miller at 75% off.
What I actually need to do is go through my closet thoroughly again.

You're thinking of Neiman Marcus at Mazza Galerie, right at the Friendship Heights Metro. Saks 5th Avenue and some posh expensive speciality stores are a few blocks up from Mazza. (There's also a Hecht's there, but I'll be glad to see that become a Macy's.)
Bethesda has a number of consignment shops in which I've seen some fancy stuff (never in my size, but then I'm not easy to fit). Would there be any interest in a DC chick-ILXorz tour of these stores?
Some other DC consignment stores that might be worth a trip:Secondhand Rose (Georgetown, on Wisconsin Avenue a few blocks north of M Street)A place in Cleveland Park (can't remember its name, but it's on Connecticut Avenue near Ireland's Four Provinces)The Dupont Circle place (can't remember its name) at Connecticut Ave. and R StreetAnother place near the Cathedral; I can't remember its name but it's upstairs from the Two Amys pizza place (which in itself is worth a trip).

As for the khakis + buttondown outfit, you forgot the accessory: one cell phone on a belt clip. They get a pass if they're IT guys for at least making an effort, though! In any workplace I'd prefer by far to hang out with the IT department, maybe it's the deadpan sense of humor.
I discovered maybe I don't want a big old cross necklace. I ran across a cheap vintage one today, 70's in gold with a heavy chain, and I just couldn't see myself wearing it. Superstition. Maybe I'll have someone put my antique St Christopher medal on a chain instead.
Flat boots.. What price range?

This is OTM OTM OTM. The difference between an Ann Taylor suit and an H&M suit is very subtle indeed (besides the fact that the H&M suit jackets and blazers invariably have better tayloring and come in trendier styles, which, IMO, makes them BETTER). I mean you can take the $300 and go on Bluefly and buy some really nice higher end sweaters and shirts and pair them with a $39.99 H&M skirt and look about 70x times better than if you took that $300 and spent it all on an Ann Taylor suit :(
I don't understand people at all and their corporate wardrobes. It's like accessories and tailoring and all that are beyond them. I see some women trying, is the thing with DC, but like crazy-style, like they went to Ann Taylor and bought a striped shirt and a pinstriped skirt that don't match each other in any way and wear them together. WTF? I mean I guess I'm glad they're being a little more adventurous but seriously just shop at a store besides Ann Taylor. Buy some cheap trendy accessories. I dunno. Something.
Oh and I do ok with chain store button ups. They're usually a little too small on the top but not terribly so I just go with it. I can't afford to get better ones at this point in time!
And I'd be down for some kind of shopping excursion, like maybe after work? Worried that weekends are too crazy...

Will try Uniqlo for rough wool/tweed - also saw nice brightly coloured v-necked jumpers which would go well with Liberty print shirts. I tried on a tweed skirt in New Look, but it was all wrong.

(Though my mum says she will disinherit me (hah) if I waste that much money on a Barbour hacking jacket.)
x-post riding boots are actually very comfortable, they are designed for physical activity, so they're a lot *better* for tramping around than fashiony sorts of boots. N.B. I have not worn any since I was a teenager.

What do I wear it with so that it doesn't look too.. formal or old? What color? Ixnay on the foofy white Victorian blouses, I guess that would be kinda Chloe from a year or two ago, but they just don't suit me.
― dar1a g (daria g), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)
I am all for mixing only different shades of brown this fall, because mixing brown with turquoise or any of the other usual suspects now feels too early summer boho for me. I've also gone jewelery minimalist, which is unlike me! Just one striking huge piece and nothing else. I burnt out on it all!
Victorian detailed blouses are cute in colors besides white, I'm not quite feeling them in white.

I prefer the foo-foo blouses in black or chocolate though! Not the white ones.
― Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)
I have a brown tweed almost-swirly skirt that hits just at the bottom of my knee which I usually wear it with my raspberry colored Nine West maryjane heels and a white vneck tshirt, or a ballet wrap sweater. I really don't like all the crazy Victorian blouses- not my style at all, especially the ones with high necks or bows at the neck.
I wore the new agnes b. skirt to work today!! (with my black sandals & a lilac tshirt)

I've been to le H&M approximately six times in the past month and bought things, returned them, bought other things, returned, mostly. Most of the stuff seems unwearable. I kept a pair of plain black cropped pants and a couple of slim layered tops but nothing flashy. I do plan to get a hoodie in that odd vintagey shade of salmon pink, though. And they have a kickass military blazer with hook-and-eye closures in soft grey or black but I shouldn't spend the money on yet another suit jacket, I already have a ton. Maybe I will though. I'll try it on and see how severe it is.
ZARA seems much much better, there are lots of random and cool things for $35 and less, and neat military jackets too.

now what has happened to wedding gowns? searched two full magazines and couldn't even see any possibilities. i guess the strapless A-line look has gone mostly out of fashion? and can't see any high necked sleeveless at all. hopefully can find some older stock somewhere.

Though I hear you on the boob thing - I'm two completely different sizes in H&M. Sure, this happens in most shops to some extent, but I'm a US 12 on the bottom and a US 16 on the top!
Also, I cannot follow the Riding Boots mandate because I actually have *calves* - it's absurd to make boots in large sizes, but not also enlarge the ankle/leg part of the boot accordingly. There's an advert in last week's Country Life whereby you can get custom fitted riding boots and next month I might order a pair of those.

M&S have also come up trumps for me. I got an amazing pair of Autograph black pointy kitten heel boots half price last summer which not only zip up without wrestling, but are almost long enough to touch my kneecap. Unfortunately I was an idiot and treated them very badly and they're beyond rescue :(
― Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 29 September 2005 08:05 (twenty years ago)
M&S helped me out on the preppy sweater front and the thick black tights front. Also I got my requistite Liberty shirts and some pencil skirts from Uniqlo. They make my ass look extraordinary, not sure if that's good or bad.

They can take in boots as well? I didn't know that. Good to know, I have a great pair of flat boots that need it a little or they get too slouchy and look, uh, not how they are supposed to look. Is it expensive?
I was flipping through Bazaar the other day and found an ad with a lady wearing a knee-length full skirt in camel... and the ad was for (@*#KING ANN TAYLOR!!! CURSES!!!111oneoneone
I'll have to not wear it with an off-white cowl neck sweater topped with a belt, then.

I just got another awesome thrift score for fall, the coolest sweater ever, ever, ever, a wool sweater coat in marled black and white that buttons up and has a matching belt and a massively fat fox fur collar. It completely rules and makes me feel like I could put it on and immediately BS my way into a job in a super posh fashiony type of place.. hooray.

My aunt, who is over 6'0", said she orders her pants online from some store that offers completely unhemmed pants, and then gets them hemmed herself, but I have forgotten the name of this store. Though for some reason I'm thinking it's a division of Nordstrom's website???? Which means they are way too expensive for me (though I expected that to be the case with the sorts of things my aunt is willing to spend $$$$$$$$$ on anyway).

Another "classic" is when your previously perfectly well behaved skirt when you wore it bare-legged takes a disliking to tights and starts bunching up every step you take.

I am also in need of trousers for work. Navy pinstripe, grey pinstripe, or some tweed or subtle plaid maybe. I am being all stubborn because I am between sizes and don't want to spend the $$ buying the larger size and having it tailored, also major vanity issue in play here. arrgh.

I am having another problem, that occurs with the wearing of knee socks + calf-high boots. One sock invariably drifts below the height of the boot, while the other stays up. It wouldn't be so bad if both socks disappeared, but I feel freakish with one high sock, one disappeared sock, and a roving skirt.

y, haha
I went to Lord and Taylors last night to try and find the boy blazer, but they didn't have anything, just some lame stuff from Ralph Lauren that didn't even have gold buttons. I saw on their website they have their own lable boy blazers, but not at the Landmark store at least.
Then I went out through Hecht's and they have the boy blazers by Van Heusen. However, the 16 is to big and the 12 fits but the sleeves are a bit short, and they 14 was only available in husky, lol pwned.
They did have a really nice selection (at l and t) of half-price cashmere sweaters, in all shapes and sizes. I got a blue and green argyle cardigan, as you can just never have enough argyle. I tried on a beige leopard print cashmere cardigan with diamante buttons, but alas, the sizing was a bit off.

for spring I would like a nice white jacket. Fitted, 3/4 sleeve.
