dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 30 April 2004 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

time for a new thread.

last night watched lydia lunch live, with sax/guitar/percussion accompainment, and laptop or 'tapes'. really enjoyed it, she has great at times sleazy, at others downright demonic, stage presence.

then went home put on 'ut' 24 nov 1981 bootleg off slsk, a scorching set from them and 'noise fest' cassette on ZG records, far better summation of no wave than 'no new york'. needs a reissue.

x-post: since the march/april thread dropped off the archives...knew someone would've quibbled with this. After all, ilx is full of smart boys and girls.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm making a terribly amateurish but hopefully crowdpleasing oldskool 'n 80s mix that i may or may not get to play in public, so: "rebel without a pause", "the cars that go boom", "straight outta compton", "mad world" (the original, natch), "bizarre love triangle", "my melody", "don't you forget about me", "once in a lifetime" etc etc... other than that - bits of the new sonic youth, journey's "don't stop believing" (again and again and again), cam'ron and lots of just blaze productions.

m. (mitchlnw), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

the 80's mix needs "walk like an eygptian" or "girls just wanna have fun"

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 1 May 2004 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

You're not talking to me specifically, are you? 'Cause I liked his voice a lot.

Have you heard the Bleckmann, Julio? I think you might like it. I just started a thread on ILM.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 1 May 2004 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I've just seen yr thread on ilm. I haven't heard anything from him so I've nothing to add. I will check it out at some point, so if necessary I'll revive that thread when i do.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 3 May 2004 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

And now Isis. Who I really, really like, kind of surprisingly. I think it might be because, as Frank Kogan pointed out, they are the first metal band to be fully aware that they make the musical equivalent of calendar art. Big riffs plus glacial prettiness = grebt. It's like Mogwai actually rocked, rather than just talking about it.

Oooh this sounds good. Ronan have you heard "Pressing On" by this guy? Classic Classic CLASSIC tune.

Yeah I'm becoming a sort of obsessed fan, "Open Season" is also "wise-cracking deep-house", he has an amazing singing voice and switches from song to rap and back again in the same verse. I think it's ace he can make Moonraker or Pressin On while having such an amazing singing voice. Few of his records will be on my mix cds at any barbecues or anything I have this summer.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 07:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

no-one told me there's a new TLS record out!

I'm in the middle of making a seamless mix in Acid. It's a bit hipsterer and more mid-paced than my usual mixes but this is it so far:

1. Selah Collins - Pick A Sound
2. Symarip - Skinhead Moonstomp
3. Killing Joke - Turn to Red (Dub)
4. !!! - Dear Can
5. Cornelius - (Track 7 (i think) off "Point" can't remember the name. It has a Disco-Punk feel to it)
6. Legowelt - Disco Rout
7. Imatran Voima - In/Out
8. Hashim - Al Naafiysh
9. Two Live Crew - Pop That Pussy
10. Mos Def - Jam On It

a bit too clever for it's own good? It works though. I need somewhere to stick my mixes up since I keep banging on about them.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

hugh metcalfe/bob cobbing 'aberration' LP, this is more straight to yr guts, the reason why I luv improvised music (and only a fiver!).

followed up with a play of my first dancehall 7', its mad cobra's 'dem fi go weh' (can't remember the riddim). Sounded so damn rough (not saying this in a good or bad way), the bass was quite something (maybe need to readjust from having to listen to either digitised CD or mp3s? as I've been doing) but on second listen its fine, my fave from him in terms of delivery. thanks to the ilxer for pulling that one out of the racks for me.

Jay Munly - Jimmy Carter Syndrome. Ned, kyle, I'm curious what you'd think of this? It sort of seems to me to preserve some of the better aspects of The Burning World but maybe to go further or to at least take them in a different, more exploratory direction. It's much less pop though. (I loved TBW in 97/98 but can't really listen to it, or any other Swans for that matter, now.)

I listened to Outkast before.

Tim, are you reading my mind a bit? (Downloaded some dancehall from El Diablo the other day, recently relistened to both PM and Jane for the first time in a while, and was thinking about Spring Heel Jack on the way home from work!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes Ned, I am in fact reading your mind.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

BTW a month or two ago I quickly dropped a few dancehall tracks in the sock drawer - did you find them?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

What does Spring Heel Jack sound like when they're not jamming with free jazzers and J Spaceman?

Well, the Munly is more overtly country/folk in parts, more overtly noise and drone in others. But he sings real deep, there's a doomy mood, and the violins pine over the jangles.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i am listening to cosmic love by ralph lundsten.
68 million shades era spring hell jack is pretty ecstatic drum & bass

Sundar: what Mullygrubber said re: Spring Heel Jack. Very good stuff.

today i listened to:

- my first "dancehall 2004" comp (mostly dreamweaver, tunda klap, mad instruments, chrome, and blackout riddims).

Immersion – Low Impact (This album brings me such joy.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 6 May 2004 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like early Spring Heel Jack because it really captures and nails the good side of "intelligent" drum & bass - hyper-frisky syncopated breaks and gorgeous synth melodies *but* with big, physically noticeable dub basslines. I don't think any other *albums* come as close to nailing the style as There Are Strings and 68 Million Shades do, although obv a lot of producers were doing equally or more amazing stuff circa '93/'94.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 6 May 2004 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim OTM on the description how the dub bass really comes to the fore in that stuff -- it does not ignore where the music came from in the first place!

- bark psychosis - codename: dustsucker x 3

So did the damn thing leak a while back or is it finally out and who do I have to kill to get a copy?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 8 May 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

these are the cds i brought home this weekend:

palace 'viva last blues'
subarachnoid space 'these things take time'
unwound 'the future of what'
comets on fire 'field recordings from the sun'
drive like jehu 'yank crime'
the birthday party 'the future of what'

i may be a contender for ILX's biggest rockist. this weekend, though, i plan to purchase the "New England" boxed set on RRR (10 of New England's finest noise artists across 5 LPs) and some other local noisy noisy stuff, like White Mice (who will be famous soon enough) and Lazy Magnet (which is actually lofi home recorded singer/songwriter stuff from ex-USAISAMONSTER guy)

Jordan, you don't like the Live with Shipp and Parkers and Spaceman and Bennink? I love it.

The Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid, disc 2
Buck 65 – Talkin’ Honky Blues
Cex – Role Model
About half of DJ Spooky – Modern Mantra
Brett Larner/Joelle Leandre/Kazuhisa Uchihashi – No Day Rising
I heard them blasting Guns n Roses – “Sweet Child O’ Mine” from upstairs. I loved it.
Bill Frisell – The Intercontinentals
Caught the end of the MuchMusic countdown with my housemate. Afterwards it was much harder to work on my essay. I wonder if pop may be less conducive to certain types of brain work, like I’ve heard junk food is.
Toru Takemitsu – To the Edge of Dream (John Williams; Sebastian Bell; London Sinfonietta). This made it easier. "Toward the Sea" is lovely.

Now they're going to play "Good Night" by Gorecki. It sounds pretty good so far.

'ligeti CDR 1' are d/l's from slsk:

'artikulation' and 'glissandi' are his two electronic pieces, which I can take or leave, nothing that stands out.

then 'poeme symphonique' for 100 metronomes, 'chamber concerto' 'atmospheres' and 'continuum' all contain marvellous textures, which I could listen to all day.

but now I'm at work.

I'm currently getting my funk on to Womack, Womack, Ashford and Simpson, and wondering if I can get away with a mash-op of Bad and Ghostbusters.

I had to unplug my CD player thanks to moving related complications, so yesterday I was listening to tapes I hadn't listened to in a while.

Said Mekawwy. Great composer. Not much of a singer.

A Warda tape. Kind of dreary mood. Nice moments here and there (especially instrumental passages--a brief kanun solo here, some ney there). There's that rhythm again that sounds like a very slowed down dancehall/ragga rhythm. I guess it's a basic enough rhythm that it shouldn't be surprising that it turns up in Arabic music as well (usually with more irrergularities thrown in for instance than I think you normally would get in ragga, but I wouldn't know for sure).

Sabah Fakhry, who I don't usually like very much. The first tape I listened to him was pretty good. I think I prefer when he's keeping things toned down. Again, very nice work by some of the instrumental accompaniment.

Farid el Atrache: "Kelmet Itab" and a couple other songs. The one in the middle is pretty campy (electronic organ, a chorus that at times sounds like a Hollywood notion of what Arabic music should sound like), but the first and last songs are delivered straight, just Farid accompanying himself on oud--and very good stuff.

I want more Arabic music.

then another CDR with compositions by ligeti 'apparitions' from '59, 'lux aetherna' and 'cello concerto', then scelsi's 'kot-tha' (this is one of his very best) and 'uaxuctum II' (like his use of vocals here, more creeping up and ebbing away than anything I've heard from him).

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 29 May 2004 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

(jury's still out but I think I like it more than the first one. "Dry Your Eyes" > "It's Too Late," etc.)

I've renounced all music except dub and that created by Wu Tang Clan members.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 29 May 2004 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Ian Johnson is Ian Maxwell Johnson, son of William and Judi.

I don't think you are me, but it would be neat.

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 30 May 2004 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, sorry. It's the age of octeen that confused me.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Sunday, 30 May 2004 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i was listening to that for the first time in a while because my friend Nicole is going to see Braid tonight (is seeing them right now?) in Chicago, and we were talking about it. I always liked Age of Octeen way more than Frame & Canvas.

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 30 May 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

It was always my favorite! There is never love for the age of octeen. "My Baby Smokes" is a great song.

Good other picks too, though.

Mainly Alice Cooper this weekend.

At present: Love it to Death

I must get some of his eraly '80's albums. "From the Inside" is one of the best albums I've bought this year.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 30 May 2004 08:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i will be boringly exhaustive

- lots of acid house, especially lil louis, kc flightt, phuture, mr fingers, 808 state and laurent x

- the white label house mixes of prince's "uptown", snoop's "beautiful" and hall & oates "say no go"

- a japanese roy ayers compilation (mellow jazzy stuff, not so much disco)

- "sign of the times" (thanks to matos)

- ghostface's pretty toney album and the young gunz album (still!)

- various bill withers tracks and james brown's "the payback". a bit of marvin gaye.

- all sorts of those hella jazzy zero 7 and blackbeard and yam who? remixes of people like pharrell and common and lambchop and so on

although in a few weeks when summer begins my resolution is to only listen to theo parrish, moodymann, jimmy smith, sun ra, the blue note show on the jazz radio station and my big neglected collection of nonesuch world explorer and sublime frequencies cds. i will be one chilled beatnik by mid-august.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 30 May 2004 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, and all those old jazz fusion lite drum and bass tracks by ltj bukem and pfm and jmj & richie and flytronix and alex reece and wax doctor and dj pulse sitting in my soulseek folder. that will chill me out for sure. it will be just like summer of 1996, except less dope and more worry lines.

I was doing this thing today before work with Kish Kash where I'd play "Plug It In" (till the part where I get bored) and "Kish Kash" (till the part where I get bored, if I do) and "Right Here's The Spot" (always in its entirety) over and over in varying order with "Lucky Star" played between each track. I probably did that for 45 minutes to an hour.

Cee-Lo Green is the Soul Machine

I like it, but it's not enough to win me over to paying more attention to new hip-hop pop etc. blah lbah blah

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Sunday, 30 May 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Boy this "All Day Love Affair" shamelessly plays to thirty-something 70's soul nostalgia, and I am going for it.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Sunday, 30 May 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Before that System of a Down. I kind of like the sound of the band, but I can't stand that kind of singing at all.

Before that: Alice Coltrane's Transfiguration. Kind of boring to me.

It's going to be time for some Kawkabani Brothers soon, I think, though I'm still working my way through these Cee-Lo songs.

Right now I'm listening to a CD-R of mp3s I downloaded recently, including Natutical Alamanc, Mortiis, Gang Gang Dance, Icewater Scandal, and Duran Duran Duran.

Earlier today, I went to the Movement Festival in Detroit and saw Joris Voorn (Dutch techno guy who's live PA was a mix of slammin', Detroit, and Chain Reaction stylee), DJ Language (my new second favorite DJ, next to Theo Parrish), Ron Trent, and CDataKill (breakcore!!!). Last night, Peanut Butter Wolf rocked my world, and BMG from Ectomorph and Sal from Liquid Liquid did a fun collabo.

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Monday, 31 May 2004 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Posting while drinking will make you misspell words like "Nautical", "Almanac" and "whose".

Really getting into that new PJ Harvey record, funnily enough - also drove me back to Is This Desire?, which is a sorely underrated record. I think I prefer Our Polly when she's not overtly trying to be commercial (even if being anti-commercial is, in the usual ironic way, quite commercial in itself).

Also enjoying the new Eno remasters - Warm Jets, Tiger Mountain, Green World and B&A Science. The new clarity of sound works best on Green World, but I think I might have preferred Warm Jets when it was all fuzzed up.

Nina Simone & Piano - especially "The Desperate Ones," the best Brel interpretation ever (some Scott notwithstanding)? Fabulous record; more people should know it.

The first Roches album - lovely summer listening.

This Nation's Saving Grace (before I saw the ILM thread!), especially "Paint-Work."

Lots of things I've had to review for Uncut, including Adam & the Ants remasters (Dirk, Kings, Prince) for which I had to interview Marco Pirroni - what a lovely man he is, really nice to talk to. Particularly surprised at how well Dirk Wears White Sox stands up; Franz Ferdinand started here! Plus a couple more Neubauten reissues - Kalte Sterne (Early Works 1980-82) and Tabula Rasa (2CD redux).

I've also just received the new Hidden Cameras album, which is scrumptiously good, and the Nouvelle Vague album (haven't made my mind up about that one yet).

Couldn't find that Cozy Cole Rhino reissue (thanks for emailing me Steve - I'll try and get it via Amazon) but I did buy the Teen Beat comp that Daddino recommended 'cos it has "Topsy Part II" on it and also Jimmy Dorsey's "So Rare" which is FANTASTIC - swing era veteran tries to do Earl Bostic and weirdly succeeds! Number 2 in the States, did nothing in Britain, but I love it. And the original version of Link Wray's "Rumble" as appropriated by Our Marco for the Ants' "Killer In The Home."

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 07:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Bark Psychosis - Codename: Dustsucker (I think I'm impressed with this. It's currently on 'Shapeshifting' which is a blast)
Junior Boys - Last Exit
Two Culture Clash - How Do You Love?

Cylob - new EP, part 1 of 2

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

funny I also bought a nina simone LP on fontana last week.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

More Nazem AlGhazali. I ordered the other two CDs of his that are widely available. (Alas, vol. 2 has that ubiquitous Cairo string section sound which I was glad to get away from. Not that the music isn't still good. I have to just roll with it.)

but I think I might have preferred Warm Jets when it was all fuzzed up

This makes sense.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

(Very weird AlGhazali track with what sounds like some kind of mega-ethnic percussion and drone that is unfamiliar to me. Sounds like something from a soundtrack.)

yoko ono 'plastic ono band' (slsk again!), she chooses a very limited range as far as the vocals go so you'll either love it or hate it but she pulls it off, the concrete and ayler bits work very well and the grooves/repetition are classic all the way.

The extra tracks are triffic too!

Ian, I don't know enough either but I like Evan Ziporyn's Gamelan Galak Tika and the Evergreen Club I've heard (North of Java is one - it has some pretty 80s-ish synths and shit though, which turns a lot of people off).

William Hooker – Shamballa (the Elliot Sharp stuff)
Lal – Warm Belly High Power
Shawn Bell – “Currents II”
A Foot In Coldwater – “(Make Me Do) Anything You Want”
About half of Björk – Post
Godspeed You Black Emperor! – Lift Yr Skinny Fists (thr first track)
Blackalicious – Blazing Arrow
About half of William Beauvais – Traces
Allman Brothers Band – Dreams, disc 1

Today everything kind of seemed wanting except for Bell, Blackalicious, Beauvais, and Allmans. Maybe AFIC too.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 3 June 2004 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard them but I'm sure I'd like them. They're in the same vein as GG I think. If you wanna hear some non-wanky prog then Gentle Giant is the way to go unless you want to listen to Kraut-prog, although GG takes some getting used to (the multipart recorder interludes can be a bit much for a new listener to take!).

Last night: part of a soul compilation plus a Diana Ross & the Supremes collection. Frankly, a little bored by both. There are songs I love on both CDs, but hearing so much of this stuff all at once is overload for me. Despite that, my appreciation for "Love Won't Let Me Wait" has only deepened.

'julio, i think you'd like the Can live album [they're much more improv (the liebezeit/schmidt interplay is otm more than once) than on record], you might want to check it out on one of your many slsk-searches...'

On first listen (and things are always hazy on fist listen) there were some good moments, the synth crossfire on 'jynx', the guitar soloing towards the end of 'vernal equinox' and how coherent their 'instant compositions' end up being- I guess they played together for so long they developed the chops to do that- its all a good set of jam(s) on grooves, but they didn't sound that addicitive to me so my attention span was wondering quite a bit on the longest of tracks, so the interplay kind of got lost on me.

Whereas improv doesn't do groove or repetition but its all interplay.

needs a few listens really.

But thanks for the recommendation, I don't have lots of krautrock but love most of what I have and I need to check some more of their stuff.

Nina simone 'tell me more' LP on fontana, the first tarck has a wonderful skeletal drum sound, the only accompainment to the vocals; she's on piano on other tracks, showing her light touch but being mean when she has to be.

I was organizing my CDs today, and on a whim I threw on Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - that much reviled Pazz & Jop poll winner of a couple years back - more than anything I was surprised at how *depressed* it sounds. For some reason, I really noticed it more hearing it again probably a year since the last time I played it. I kind of liked it, but it's almost painful to sit through, because Tweedy just sounds so depressed.

Weird. I was thinking obsessively about that song today on the way to work. For years I used to think they were singing "Venture a highway," as if "venture" was a verb. (I think my family has lived on the east coast since the 1700s.)

i checked this out. it's a great track! easily the best he's done in years, i especially enjoyed the "who's cooler than really cool?/bryan ferry!" lyric :)

Filfel Gourgy: The World Is Happy. I just called him an Iraqi Jewish oldie on ILM, but after reading the liner notes I realize it's actually more complicated than that since this might have all been recorded after he moved to Israel. His career as a singer in Iraq was quickly cut short in 1950. I think the claims that under different political conditions he would have become a major Iraqi singer are accurate.
