you're not a jerk; this is annoying and even though art is work, imo any real artist would be a bit embarrassed to have their life/work/art talked about like this on a poster that seems to speak for all artists. work is work and sometimes it's passionate and sometimes it's art.

i feel like such a crank cuz people share that all over the place on facebook and the responses to it are always OH GOD YES A THOUSAND TIMES I CAN'T LIKE THIS ENOUGH POWER TO THE PEOPLE and i'm always tempted to post something really mean but i don't cuz i'm not THAT big of a jerk.

it's REALLY narcissistic and kinda weird to think that people buy art in order to suck up the "passion" of the artist like a vampire. people like art so they can form their own meanings/interpretations/relationships to it.

also this boils down to: gimme money so i can continue to be all about my passions and inner life.

feel like there is something deeply insidious about 'inspirational' cultural artifacts

I got a lotta FEELINGS about this tbh because I used to work with people who now post a lot of inspirational stuff to their Facebook. They're still at the job I left 9 years ago. I know what that job pays, and I know there hasn't been a raise since I left unless it's a state-mandated cost of living raise. So while the aesthete/would-be intellectual in me objects strenuously to some of this shit and thinks, y'know, there's SO MUCH MORE to be gained by really getting your hands dirty thinking about the stuff that you're sort of settling for the skimmings of here, I think people sharing & posting these has multiple faces, and one of them is like the 5 O'Clock Funnies, which was something on KLOS in Los Angeles way back when. I'd finish up my workday, which sucked & which I sucked at, and get in the car. The traffic would suck. And KLOS would play 5 minutes of some dumb ass comedy routine, and it would really improve my mood, because there was lots to dislike about my life at the time. I know everybody's got crushing jobs but the tiresome Bible camp counselor in me wants to say "these people could be posting this stuff to say 'here's an oar I grabbed ahold of instead of just reaching for the vodka.'"

It's a totally invented quote but even taken at face value would have a much darker interpretation if put in proper context. When he was 5 years old he was probably going through the most harrowing year of his whole life. He was removed from his mother's care by Social Services, forced to choose between his dad (who tried and failed to abduct him) and his mum (whose boyfriend, a violent drunk, wanted rid of him) then ended up with neither.

I mean, I think that "people with mental health issues" is a pretty serious area where people are trying to address prejudice right now. From my experience, there's still a lot of general prejudice against people with mental health problems. I've only personally experienced comparatively small mental health problems myself, but know and love people with serious problems. I know that most people on ilx are progressive enough to not be all like "depressed people are just weak", but I still try to take it seriously.

Okay, that went completely over my head. Apologies for not realising it was a reference. I've just heard *that* sentiment a hell of a lot more in real life than the ham-fisted but at least supportive jpg it was mocking.

I forgot about yr dad, FFM. I also have mentally-ill, potentially suicidal relatives. But I think it's important for normal people to be able somehow to relate to crazy people. I have mental health issues, but I consider myself relatively normal, but I have to deal with so many crazy people in my day-to-day. And it's tough. But I do the best I can. And part of what makes it so tough for me is the other normal people who have very intense reactions to the ones who are fucked up.

HL: I do speak very cautiously around those I know with these issues..I tend to treat ILX as a bit of a place to unwind and as such it sometimes gets the worst of me. :) I'm much nicer & quieter irl. E, it was a shitty throwaway allusion and perfectly understandble that people would miss it, but I felt the word amazing was ott enough that my embellishment would shine through. Anyway. fair enough, ffm. I just have to deal with some depressives and some bipolars and some autism spectrum people and some people who are undiagnosed-as-of-yet on the daily. I know ilx tends to get pretty serious about other forms of bigotry and I know for example that talking shit about retarded people upsets Abbbottt pretty bad. but it's really not quite there yet in terms of the popular consensus. I just thinl that - as much as mental health shit is in the forefront for me - MOST folks it's not in the forefront for. MOST people NEED those shiity memes. Continue....
