If It Makes You Less Sad I Will POLL Emo Albums

I hope you find out what you want.
I already know what I am.

http://imgur.com/8izIvbK.jpg

Emo, screamo, pop-punk, skate punk, mallcore, post-hardcore, ska punk, psychobilly and Warped Tour music.

This poll is genre inclusive so I won’t be policing nominations but every one should more-or-less have an idea of the genre aesthetic being polled. Classic 70s punk doesn’t really belong here (Sex Pistols, the Clash) but some Dischord albums are okay (if just on the edge) as well as other proto-emo bands (and in fact I’m very interested in stretching the lineage of this kind of music as far back as it goes without becoming unreasonable).

We’re polling albums, not tracks (though if there’s enough demand I don’t mind running a track poll either concurrently or sequentially).

We will run with one week of nominations. Next Monday (2/20) I will open the voting thread. Per request voting will run for two weeks. Rollout will begin around 3/6.

Here are 10 albums to start off the nominations:

Brand New - Deja Entendu
Thursday - War All the Time
Streetlight Manifesto - Everything Goes Numb
The Promise Ring - Nothing Feels Good
Braid - Frame & Canvas
Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American
Taking Back Sunday - Where You Want to Be
Dashboard Confessional - The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most
Fall Out Boy - Infinity on High
My Chemical Romance - Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge

Yeah! That's a good idea. Vote for your favorite song title and I'll run it as a secondary poll during the album rollout.

I got to Ottawa well after 5 Arlington. Only moved there in 1999 (and wasn't old enough to start going to shows until like 2000, 2001). The way people used to talk about Shotmaker in hushed tones though, wow. I listened to a few mp3s off of soulseek at the time but more or less forgot their name until now!!! currently listening to mouse ear, damn i like this even more thna I thought I would in 2017/at age 32!

brontosaur, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 22:06 (seven years ago) link

So for the poll itself, what criteria are we voting on? Say there's an album I absolutely love (Unwound, or Hoover) but in no way consider emo. Do I still vote for it? Are we voting for canonical emo albums, or just a sort of "these are my favorites of the bunch" thing?

So I'm allowing any and all nominations, however, my preference (and really I can't force anyone to do anything but imo this will produce the best results) is that you vote for what you think falls under the very broad guidelines indicated in the opening post. I don't think anything nominated so far is egregious enough that voting for any of the noms will ruin the poll but as a general approach I'm not looking to poll the indie classics (or punk or whatever) that someone was able to shoehorn in as /emo/ or /pop-punk/. I think the genres are distinctive socially (if not exclusively aesthetically) - i.e. the me who listened to emo music was in a different stage of life w/ a different mentality and looking for different things out of music than the me that was into indie / college rock music. And if some albums I listened to in one way in one stage transformed/crossed over into the other, I'd think that when I vote in this poll I'll be voting for stuff as it appeared in that emo category. Sorry if this all sounds very vague + nebulous and like I said I think the nominations are all pretty good so I'm not too worried. Just let's say this is my personal approach towards this poll and I encourage others who have not yet nailed down their own to consider it for themselves. I was serious above when I said I consider emo to exist primarily in the reception of its listeners and I think that's probably a good rule to hold to.

Mordy, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 23:20 (seven years ago) link

Just thinking out loud but something essential to me about emo is that unlike punk or indie music it is decidedly uncool. Not that I personally think it's uncool but that it's an aesthetic that doesn't hold itself a part from its listeners or engage in sardonic distancing (or when it is ironic - which sometimes it is - never to the same extent as these other genres). It's immediate and direct and wears its heart on its sleeve. It's not always miserable or sad, it can be playful and fun, but it's not detached. It's always invested in what it is doing. nb this is my personal interpretation and not only am I open to disagreement but I'd love to hear other people's thoughts on what distinguishes this aesthetic specifically.

Mordy, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 23:28 (seven years ago) link

yeah i think those are good points. part of the fun of this poll is going to be how everyone perceives these records based on when/where/how old they were. there are bands in this poll with extensive discographies who have one album i love and several i ignored. but that one album was what i needed at the time.

Excited to dig into the earlier records, but for now I went back to No Devolución. It's been a while for me since a totally unknown album has hooked me like this.

Gonna echo Arch's praise, listened to War all the Time earlier and enjoyed it a lot. Really liking the Snowing record that was nommed as well.

i'm listening through the playlist to albums i haven't heard before (and some i have) and i got to /fevers and mirrors/ and had no idea bright eyes had "covered" sunrise, sunset which - giant lol but also aw <3 - we have a children's book with the lyrics from the song that i used to sing/read to my girls but i always got teared eyed when i did and choked up. v good emo crossover choice tho i don't think he actually hits the emotional resonance of the original.

I don't think I've voted in a non year-end poll either, but i gotta join in here.

what is the feeling on nominating (and i know the answer is to just nominate and see how the votes shake out) stuff more strongly from the skate/pop punk side? like Blink got nommed already, would Rufio/The Ergs/Yellowcard be too far gone to get any votes?

I will nominate these two Canadian skate punk albums though, whether they fit or not i don't care people should just hear them!

Yeah, i would support a side poll of albums that got nominated but are not quite right to vote highly. something like - Emotionally Challenged: Ten Albums that rock but you could never vote higher than Bleed American - not that you of course couldn't vote for them in the main poll, but that would be an interesting side poll.

go with the singles comp (21:51) first over the lone album (nervous circuits). comp is more chaotic hardcore in the the trad gravity recs vein, album foregrounds the more goth/synth-punk side of the band. (ie what made them a topic of ire/fascination among the heartattack/punk planet sets.)

the album was also first released on honey bear, a.k.a. lance from j. church's label. which also put out records/videos from unwound, superchunk, refused, and the ex. which is making me even more nostalgic than this thread.

Ten Albums that rock but you could never vote higher than Bleed American

I mean, I'd vote for Second Stage Turbine Blade higher than Bleed American, but not in an emo poll. I'd definitely go in for the non-emo side poll though. There are some really great albums that are being listed here that I wouldn't think of or have never thought of as emo.

Is there going to be a separate thread for arguing over what should and shouldn't be called 'emo?' Would that even be fun, or just irritating? I'm sure all the arguments have been heard by now.

I mean, I'd vote for Second Stage Turbine Blade higher than Bleed American, but not in an emo poll.

you wouldn't? it's v much an emo album on a pure songwriting level

I can see where the argument could be made, I just feel like it doesn't quite fit the category. The lyrics are a little too out of the narrator's head, if you understand what I'm saying-- lyrics about girls, but not so much from the same emotional headspace of something like "then I kissed the phone" or "when summer is gone, I'll be 24." And the music is of a piece of a lot of the pop-punk end of emo, but there's a lot of pop-punk that doesn't strike me as being emo, including Green Day and Blink-182.

I see this stuff in three categories: tr00 emo (Saetia, Jeromes Dream, Moss Icon), false emo (Jimmy Eat World, Braid, Rainer Maria), and that's-not-emo-but-I-see-where-you're-coming-from (Weezer, The Lapse, Hum). Let me emphasize that these are all based mostly on gut feelings, not analytical reactions, so I'm not saying your jam is less valid than mine because mine is all screaming and octave chords and yours actually sold records.

Mordy, Thursday, 16 February 2017 03:11 (seven years ago) link

And the music is of a piece of a lot of the pop-punk end of emo, but there's a lot of pop-punk that doesn't strike me as being emo, including Green Day and Blink-182.

there was a literal shit-ton of this stuff in the 90s that didn't fit neatly in any one camp -- jawbreaker, fuel, samiam, seaweed, j. church, arguably jawbox and others -- that only became "emo" in retrospect. arguably the shift came by '98 or whenever that burning airlines/jets to brazil/promise ring tour happened. you had two former jawbox dudes doing an xtc-filtered-through-post-hardcore thing, blake pulling classic rock moves, and one band that is obviously no-foolin' emo, at least in the sense that someone listening to dashboard could intuit a lineage. but all of them made sense playing together in a way that jawbreaker might have seemed the odd-men-out playing a gilman show with a buncha pop-punk dudes and jawbox fumbled for the alt-rock brass ring when hardcore was shifting toward victory chugga-chugga or grind/d-beat thrashing. at the same time it's probably no mistake that the promise ring were the headliners, given that they had a.) some vestigial link to d.i.y., b.) hooks that slotted them alongside the superchunk wing of indie just as those bands were breaking up/getting arty, and c.) helped to set the template (along with i dunno braid and the get-up kids and lifetime) for emo-as-pop. (about six months before that tour i saw burning airlines play to about six people in a philly bar which given that their former band was only recently playing radio station festivals was like watching the whole alt-rock thing crash in real-time.)

I'm going to do one better and link to the entire nominations list now. Nominations continue through the weekend but I wanted to give people a chance to see the full list (of 416 albums!) before nomination period ends. I was going to just paste the whole list here but 416 albums is a bit obscene to dump in a post (I'll do it on Monday when voting starts but only the once instead of over and over). So here's a link to all the nominations so far - I think I've caught all duplicates and misspellings but if I missed something please let me know!

I'm trying to listen to as many of these albums as I can but the playlist is already 243 hours (not to mention the probably 50-100 hours not represented on the playlist) and I can only sometimes resist relistening albums I already love passionately and intend to vote for. If I listen to 5 hours a day (which seems like an ask, but doable) 240 / 5 = 48 days and I wanted to give 14 days for voting so obviously I'm not getting to all of these. I did institute an early hermeneutic tho - I'm not wasting time on unpleasant screaming vocals that border on cookie monster. Rickley vocals is probably the most extreme I'm willing to entertain - which means that I don't have to bother with Hopesfall or envy (so far). I had never listened to Blood Brothers before this week - I always avoided them because I assumed that they were too rough + unpleasant for my tastes but the vox are not cookie monster grating like I imagined - just kinda bizarre + funky? they actually kinda weirdly remind me of claudio sanchez's vox which I thought were normally derided by the kind of ppl who like Blood Brothers!

Mordy, Saturday, 18 February 2017 04:24 (seven years ago) link

Mordy, The Blood Brothers are incredible. Without knowing this poll was coming, I've been currently going through a Blood Brothers phase and it's been really rewarding. ...Burn Piano Island is probably still the album that hits me the hardest but Crimes and Young Machetes are brilliant. Even back then, they always stood taller than the other bands in the genre. The albums got more and more dense and interesting as they went on. Got to see them during the reunion period a year or so ago and it was nuts. Completely sold out and the energy was awesome. The times finally caught up to them. And actually, the first time I ever saw them, they opened for Coheed and Cambria. So they aren't too far off.

gman59, Saturday, 18 February 2017 04:38 (seven years ago) link

I actually put them more in line with The Locust than anything. Locust can't count in the poll...can they?

Crimes is (imo) easily the best Blood Brothers album. Burn Piano Island Burn created the BB formula, Crimes is where they laughed at the idea of there being a BB formula. I'm not sure I'll vote for any Blood Brothers stuff because is it emo, etc, but I'd say the Locust should count if the Blood Brothers do.

As far as Coheed and Cambria goes, I love "The Suffering" but didn't really connect with the rest of that album at the time and never really tried outside of that. I should really try again. I have friends who play in a progressive hard rock band who cite C&C as a major influence.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Saturday, 18 February 2017 13:49 (seven years ago) link

Burn Piano Island Burn created the BB formula, Crimes is where they laughed at the idea of there being a BB formula

This is kinda true, but mostly I always hear Crimes as the one where they made an attempt to write songs they could actually play live without physical injury

When it's on, March On Electric Children is my real favorite. (Recently located a copy of This Adultery is Ripe and it's no slouch either.)

I think part of the difficulty of the idea of the emo poll is the nostalgia factor, which makes it difficult to pick up new favorites to vote for the way you could with eg one of the year end polls. mostly you just end up deepening your love for records you already adore (as has been the case with me + the weatherthans, juno, fireworks). but I could see throwing this a few points.
