In this article, a Brewers' fan hopes that the Cubs will underrate the real effectiveness of LaTroy Hawkins, who is a good pitcher. BrewGrit = Good Blog.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

can we have a Brewers thread? I'm officially adopting them as my NL team, now that they have EL CABALLO. I think Kerry might be on the wagon as well.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I will write off last year's problems closing as an aberration if Hawkins
a) Gets a chance to close while Borowski is out (I sense Uggy...)
b) Succeeds

Last year he was the poster boy for anyone who claimed that pitchers had to have certain intangibles to be a successful closer. I think he blew the second most saves in baseball, posted stats that otherwise would be considered quite good out of the pen, and then all but admitted in the postseason that he didn't have what it took to be a closer. Should be a fun first few months.

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

My Cubs prediction: 78-84 or 84-78.

I just don't see them going anywhere this year. Too many questions in the bullpen, the starters are banged up and I don't think they will score as many runs. I'd like the Cubbies to suprise me, but I just cannot see it happening unless a bunch of people have career type seasons, especially Patterson and Nomar with Wood and Prior returning to health and top form.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

For whatever reason, I've never been that down on LaTroy as I've been with other Cub relievers.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Stormy - I'll be watching the Brewers a lot more now that Lee is up there. Might even try to catch a game or two, I've never been to that new stadium, it looks nice. [/off-topic]

Shatterproof Glass (dymaxia), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeromy Burnitz ain't leaving Wrigley early!

The Cards might be more vulnerable than ppl think, but only if Prior / Wood / Zamb manage 200 innings each.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 24 March 2005 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I will be very suprised if the Cards bullpen is as anywhere near as effective as last season as they either traded or let get away about everyone but Isringhausen and Ray King. LaRussa won't be able to change pitchers every out like he did last year.

The Reds will again hit like beer league softball team, but they cannot field or pitch. The Reds really need a new owner.

The Astros could have good starting pitching, especially if Petitte returns to form and Clemens pitches well, but their bullpen runs thin after the first couple of guys and they have some black holes in their lineup. Unless someone comes out of nowhere, they are going to have to hope to hold par until Berkman comes back and hope that Bagwell has another big season in him.

The Brewers are a mystery team, they could win 90 or lose 90 depending on how things work out.

The Pirates have a few good young players, but that seems to be said every year for the past dozen or so. Considering the great history of this team, I find it really sad to see this club in the muck for this long.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The Cards are still the favorites, that lineup is still massive. Their starting pitching should be decent and could be really good if Mulder gets back to top form and Carpenter can stay healthy and effective.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

PH pecking order through three games:

1. Macias
2. Neifi
3. N/A

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 7 April 2005 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Burnitz with INF more HRs than Sosa so far this year. Clearly the added chemistry has Burnitz and the team playing better ball. Viva Jer0my!

mattbot (mattbot), Saturday, 9 April 2005 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Zambrano is a better hitter than either of the two players listed two posts up. 2-3 with one RBI today plus he's clutch with the tangible intangibles like taking the extra base:

Corey Patterson singles on a ground ball to right fielder Geoff Jenkins. Carlos Zambrano to 3rd. Corey Patterson to 2nd on the throw.

mattbot (mattbot), Saturday, 9 April 2005 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

from today's Rob Neyer column, for the Stone quote

"Are you following the ongoing saga of the Cubs' TV broadcasters, past and present? In case you missed it, Steve Stone and Chip Caray were essentially fired after last season because they couldn't control their honesty, and they were replaced by Bob Brenly and Len Kasper. Last week on a Chicago radio show, Stone – who in case you've missed it, now works for ESPN – said, referring to the 2004 Cubs, "Most of the guys I thought we got along with, but there were a few that we didn't. One [Moises Alou] left the game [Wednesday] with a calf injury. But when you're 70, that stuff happens."

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

OH THAT DUSTY:

Neifi batting 2nd today for the Cubs:
OBP .125
SLG .125

Derrek Lee batting 6th:
OBP .467
SLG .522

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

They need them free-swingers up yonder towards the top to advance runners over, you know! Dusty knows his intangibles! He's chewin on that toothpick and thinking things through while everyone else is busy checkin stat sheets and OBP! He's through the looking glass, y'all, at least three innings ahead of everyone else! Watch and learn, friends! He's a winner!

Nice game by Dempster today, too bad the Cubs couldn't score a couple of runs.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

My feelings about Dusty managerial decisions have gone from mild bemusement a few years ago (esp. when it was just Shawon and the Giants) to downright loathing re: Fat Lenny, Macias, and now Neifi. It's pointless to even complain, but the man's gut has got to be stopped.

mattbot (mattbot), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I would be remiss if I didn't point out that Hendry has willingly loaded this fool's gun with inferior bench ammunition year after year.

mattbot (mattbot), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

It's funny because Hendry has made some ace decisions with the roster as far as 1-9 are concerned. Too bad 10-25 have been horrible.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

[In Dusty's defense: Neifi's 2-2 today, bringing him up to .300; meanwhile Wood still looks junky]

Why piss on an injury when He's in reach? (Thank you, CSTB!)

"Dusty Baker has taken to rubbing holy water on the injured parts of Cubs players. This could explain why third baseman Aramis Ramirez was so adamant Tuesday that he did not have a strained groin."

Gotta love that 2nd sentence. Puts Dusty's healing touch in a whole new perspective.

I think the Mets' radio team claimed last night it was h.w. Dusty claims to have received from the late Polish pontiff himself. They chortled and said things were easier for Dusty when he just got to write Bonds' name in the lineup.

I just googled "Dusty Baker voodoo" as a joke and it turned up loads of hits ... which was a surprise to me until I saw the following quote:

"It's not like it's voodoo or something," the manager [Baker] also said.

"It's blessed. I didn't bless it. It wouldn't work if I blessed it. I just hope that my sinning doesn't negate the effectiveness of the water."

"It can't be any more painful than it was yesterday," he said. "I have an avulsion of the tendon. Basically, I ruptured the tendon off the bone. There's a few tendons that go along your groin area. There's three major muscles and one of the muscles tore away from the bone. That's what the MRI showed."

Cubs won 10-6. New closer Chad Fox walked three and gave up a three run taco to Adam Dunn in the 9th and had to be yanked. Prior went 6 w/10 Ks and 1 ER.

mattbot (mattbot), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, 2 ER. But he got the W, so he's still in tight competition with Jon Lieber for the Cy.

mattbot (mattbot), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Fox's shitty performance likely was due to the fact that his arm tore off in the ninth:

There will be questions why manager Dusty Baker decided to open the ninth with Fox after he pitched successfully Sunday against Pittsburgh and this game was far from a save situation. Baker said he was caught off guard after Neifi Perez's three-run homer in the eighth made it a seven-run lead. Mike Remlinger was briskly warming up, Baker said, but couldn't get loose quickly enough to open the ninth.

"That three-run homer happened so quickly that nobody could get loose at that time,'' Baker said. "Foxy was the only one loose.''

But even without the Perez homer, the Cubs still would have entered the ninth with a four-run lead. Why couldn't Remlinger or Jon Leicester try to finish this game? That will be the what-if that haunts this turning point in the season. Baker already had used LaTroy Hawkins in the eighth, and he apparently wasn't going to give him two innings.

"We were getting Rem loose,'' Baker said. "But we didn't have time. ... I'm glad we won the game, but I hope Foxy is all right.''

Everybody pretty well knows he isn't. An extremely friendly guy who is accommodating to the media, even Fox refused to talk afterward when reporters approached his locker. That tells you how bad it probably is.

In the list of Dusty's stupid's in-game managerial moves, this one ranks relatively low on the outrage-meter (his justification seems believable, though I didn't watch the game to know if there was time to warm up Rem or Leicester). Oddly enough, it's the one the press seems to have been most quick to question.

"and one LF"

They need just freakin start DuBois. The guy is hitting over .300 with some power in limited duty. Give him a shot, they might get lucky and get a true starter out there.

I'm beginning to think the whole "lets convert Kerry Wood into a closer" idea may not be a crazy as it seems. Wood couldn't do worse than the bozos they have thrown out for the past couple of seasons and it isn't like the guy is making his way as a starter these days. Maybe a bit of time in the pen might straighten Kerry's head out a bit and get his game back together.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 12 May 2005 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

On PTI today, Gammons reported that the Cubs are convinced that Zambrano's arm troubles have nothing to do with his pitch counts (such as the 136-pitch outing two starts ago), but rather, it's because he swings too hard during pre-game batting practice.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 16 May 2005 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Monday, 16 May 2005 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I think there's some anecdotal evidence that says the same thing - that is, his injury doesn't have to do with his pitching. Tennis elbow ahoy!

So, anyway, you're the tying run, on base w/ no outs in the 9th inning, and your name is Jeromy Burnitz. Why the HELL are you trying to steal 2nd base?

Also, regardless of what folks think of LaTroy's effectiveness as a closer, he's probably still the best guy in their bullpen (Dempster's coveted closer "experience" notwithstanding). And Dusty's moronic jerkjob (as if anything less can be expected from the guy) is just going to make the situation worse. Maybe he shd start soaking his head in that Pope water.

Also - ENRIQUE WILSON? Dusty, Dude, Pedro Martinez is in the NL EAST.

Prior leaves game after being hit by line drive
May 27, 2005

CHICAGO (AP) -- Cubs pitcher Mark Prior left Friday's game in the fourth inning after being hit in the right elbow by a line drive hit by Colorado's Brad Hawpe.

With the scored tied 1-all, Hawpe led off the fourth and hit Prior's first pitch back up the middle. After striking Prior, the ball deflected to third baseman Aramis Ramirez who caught it for the first out of the inning.

Prior collapsed and rolled in pain on the mound. He was helped off the field by the Cubs training staff. The right-hander was replaced by reliever Todd Wellemeyer.

Prior is 4-1 this season with a 2.95 ERA entering Friday's start. He began the season on the disabled list with elbow inflammation.

w/r/t: Jerome Williams

... he started this season 0-2 with a 6.48 ERA in four games before being optioned to Fresno, where he was 1-4 with a 9.36 ERA.

"Once I heard I got traded to the Cubs, I was happy," Williams said. "I really didn't care who they got for me. I was just glad I was out of the Giants organization because I felt I couldn't go anywhere with them.

There's more to the story according to Giant's brass. Aside from Jerome gaining 65 pounds in all the wrong places over the past 2 years, there were rumors that Jerome refused to abandon his less than 3/4-arm delivery that he adopted post-surgery when advised by staff/trainers... in spite of his performance (and adding further strain on the elbow).

Who the heck is John Koronka?

I've never heard of this guy, looks like he was drafted by the Reds, which considering how poor their pitching has been for 10 years is probably not a good sign.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Koronka also pitched in the Rangers system and had an ERA around 4.8 at Iowa, so I wouldn't hold my breath on this guy. He is a lefty, which is something the Cubbies could use.

DuBois is definitely not a wiz in the field, he misplayed one pretty bad last night and gave L.A. a run. I don't think he got an error, as I think Neifi did on the relay throw. If you can't make the catch, you keep the ball in front, that is basic little league play.

Zambrano really looked sharp. He is becoming an intimidating presence on the mound.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Six wins in a row and 9 out of 11, the Cubs seem to be on a good run since those first two losses to the Sox. They are hitting the ball real well.

Sunday's matchup in SD looks to be a good one with Zambrano going against Jake Peavy.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 2 June 2005 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

After tonight's shutout, Glendon Rusch qualifies for the ERA title and is now ranked 5th in all of MLB.

Shane Mitre shuts out the Marlins, the Cubs drop 14 runs, Derrek Lee with 4 hits (2 2b, 1 HR).

The 4th complete game shutout of the day in MLB!

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Mitre also had a nice start against the Blue Jays last week.

The Cubs have been hitting well for the past month. Hollandsworth has been really hot in the past week. Ramierez has driven up his batting avg fifty points since May 28.

I hope that toe thing with Zambrano is really minor, they cannot afford another starter to get hurt. Like last year, Glendon Rusch has been a real help to the club. Kerry Wood should be back within a couple of weeks, hopefully his stint on the DL will have straightened his problems out.

Zambrano's toe must not be too bad, as he is going Friday against Pavano and the Yanks.

Burnitz so far has turned out to be a good pickup. The Cubs are only into him for a year, hopefully Jeromy will keep up the good work. It is nice having a left handed power hitter to put in the middle of that lineup.

Kerry Wood made a start last night for Iowa and he hit a triple. The Cubs are going to give him a couple more starts in AAA to shake things out before bringing him back to Chicago.

Question from a Prospectus chat last week: "Will Kerry Wood be inducted into the Simulated Game Hall of Fame?"

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

It might happen. Kerry Wood has had a really bad year and a half. Looking at Wood's career, I keep thinking about how Curt Schilling never really put his game completely together until he was 30 years old. Schilling had three lost seasons after the Phils lost the series to the Jays in 93 and somehow came out the other end one of the best starters in baseball. As a fan, I hope Wood can get things going right.

Considering how the Yanks pounded the Cub pitching, they need some pitching help ASAP.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

John Garland = "the best pitcher in the American League." Woahkay. Wins notwithstanding (as it should be), there are definitely more worthy folk out there. That includes the former Cy Young guy nipping at his heels in the ERA race. Also, fans of the team GMed by Kenny Williams really don't have much to crow about in regards to rooking other teams, given his record of trading away prospects for sketchy veterans and Roberto Alomar.

Off topic: what the hell is Johan Santana doing w/ a 0.93 WHIP, .210 BA, 124 Ks in 107 IP, and a 3.45 ERA? (And what the hell is Carlos Silva doing on the ERA leader board with a BAA of .299?!?!?)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

What's the two Twins' OPS against? Luck can be a component of ERA, esp over 100 innings.

The best AL pitchers have been Halladay, Rogers, Buehrle; no one else is particularly close, and anyone who thinks otherwise is likely named Kruk.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

He wrote "the best AL pitchers *have been* ...", so it's clear that he's talking about how they've pitched so far this season. And it's true that Halladay, Buehrle, and Rogers are the AL leaders in VORP, and Santana is nowhere close to them.

However, John does have a point, for instance, Santana is second to Halladay in Average Game Score (ahead of Rogers and Buehrle). That's probably obvious to anyone who's been following his starts this year -- Santana's been roughed up a couple of times, but in most of his starts he's been dominant.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

As I posted on the Santana thread, his HRs allowed has jumped up significantly. (aside to JQH: so has Pavano's).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

his hr rate hasn't actually jumped much at all, in fact it's amazingly on track given typical fluctuation. [and barry i disagree about the clarity of morb's sentence, i mean i could easily say santana has been the best pitcher in the al, he's just had bad luck w/ RISP. or could i? maybe not. it would certainly be a little awkward. anyway i probably wouldn't have said anything but he had to bring kruk into it.]

John (jdahlem), Thursday, 23 June 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

Your absolutely right, on the Santana thread, I mention his slugging allowed (rather than his HRs allowed) has blipped up.

And it's not homers that are killing him, it's the doubles... he's allowed as many 2Bs this year as he did all of last year.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 23 June 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

>who's likely to pitch best from this point forward, it's santana<

I agree; I expect Santana to be a good Cy candidate by Sept., very possibly #1. But John, you can't seriously say Santana has pitched as well as Halladay so far.

On PTI yesterday, they talked about the his chance of winning the Triple Crown. I think Kornheiser said 0% and Wilbon said 50%. Then they yelled at each other a lot.

But seriously, what do you guys think? Even two weeks ago, I would have said that he had maybe a 15% chance of doing it, but now, I'm thinking that it's more like 30%. I know he's on an 11-game hit streak right now, but the dude is hitting over .390 in June, WTF? But the home run and RBI races are too tight right now for me to rate his chances any higher.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

Well at least the Cubs can put Glendon Rusch back in the rotation. He was doing a whole lot better starting than out of the pen in the past few weeks.

Garut for Dubois, that one probably end up pretty even swap. Dubois is younger and has two more years before he would be eligible for free agency, so he might have the upside, but Garut has shown more in the bigs. I'm hoping playing in the friendly confines and batting behind Lee and Rameriez that Garut might take off and start putting up some numbers like he did in stretches for the Trible all the time.

The Cubs need a real lead off hitter something fierce. Jerry Hairston Jr. has played better of late, but I just don't see him as a solution. Corey Patterson is a wreck, the guy cannot lay off anything outside. I've said it before, but I wouldn't give the guy a strike if I was pitching to him.

Good news is that the bullpen has been a bit better of late.

Nomar is looking to be back first of August, he is going to start playing some games in the minors next week. If the Cubs can keep tight in the wild card race, he could be a bit of a bonus down the strech. I'm sure Garciaparra is wanting to get on the field and try to get some things done.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 8 August 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

I enjoyed the writeups today:

The ball rolled into center field, and when Jose Macias fielded it, Carlos Beltran, who was running on a 3-2 pitch, was on his way to scoring easily from first. Beltran had reached with two outs on Aramis Ramirez's throwing error, his 15th of the season. Ramirez made 10 last year.

Floyd took second on Macias' rainbow throw in the general direction of home plate. David Wright's single scored Floyd with the second unearned run in the inning.

Baker said Macias hustled and couldn't have done anything more, but Ramirez's errors are an increasing burden.

They definitely looked like they would have enough not to fall to a 100 losses, but last off season was a crock of crap as they didn't even address any of the things that didn't work from the year before.

Manager Dusty Baker likely will be offered a two-year contract extension by next spring to remain with the Cubs after 2006. But whether he'll accept is a question only Baker can answer. Baker was visibly annoyed when asked Sunday if he expected an extension before next season. -- Chicago Tribune

I've had a premonition...Larry Bowa will end up the manager of the Cubs. If the Cubs come off flat next year, I think Baker will leave or be fired if they go realy in the tank. If he is not yet employed as a manager, Larry Bowa will the replacement.

Your anger is only fear that confirms that there is a high level of possibility that it could happen. I am not too sure that I want it to happen either, but then again, Dusty Baker is definitely not my favorite.

The storyline is too perfect, under achieving whiney club fails and needs a kick in the ass from an ex-Cub who was apart of a division winning team.

Yeah Bowa is the obvious reaction hiring to Baker's laissez-crap managerial style.
