I went to get something from my spare room, and the top two dresser drawers were out of the dresser and sitting on top of the bed.
I have absolutely no recollection of doing this, and it kinda freaks me out.

I think there was supposed to be an exterminator in the building sometime this week, but obviously there's no reason why an exterminator would've done that.

As far as I know, nothing's missing, though. (Not even the p0t in a small jar in one of those drawers.)

BTW, I like how a photo in the liner notes shows a song sheet with Abattoir Blues misspelled as ABBAttoir Blues, with the ABBA helpfully underlined. Do you have no concept of how communities work, original questioner? Whether it's real names or internet nicknames, people build up a level of trust over time, even with people with whom they disagree. In the absence of physical communication, body language etc., this trust, this concept of the person with whom you're communicating, becomes absolutely vital in giving both parties the security that the communication they are having is sincere.

From: Alana Post
Date: Nov 4, 2004 09:13 AM
Subject: HOW TO KEEP FROM LOL-ing: HELP!
Body: Since I've never been on the internet at work before now, I have absolutely no idea how to NOT LOL. In the library I normally just forget where I am and burst into wheezing snorts every fifteen minutes or so. You know, whenever the funny just builds up and you look like a tomato head? That's me all of the time.

As if it wasn't enough that there are hilarious websites all over the place, the BASIC COMPONENTS of these websites are enough to make me have a pee party, e.g. a picture of a raccoon, a scrolling marquee or the word "cheeks". One simply cannot help but imagine a animated gif in marquee form of a raccoon holding up a sign that reads 'CHEEKS'.

And if the internet wasn't enough, there is the real life constant hilarity of the conversations drifting up over the cubicle walls. These are even trickier to not laugh at, yes? Because sometimes it might be obvious that I am laughing directly at somebody in a loud and mean way, whereas laughing at the internet just probably makes people think that I am insane or the lucky recipient of an email containing an off colour joke.

What can I possibly do to quell the tsunami of L that threatens to smash my face in?

Thanks for your help, fellow workers!
Alana

I just realized I can probably still open and close a Subway store by myself. Also note: late night subway artists are pretty much always stoned because the walk in refridgerators have excellent ventilation systems. This is why many Subway stores burn a lot of bread because stoned people are scared of the ovens.

I just realized that I have to buy Metal Gear Solid 3 tomorrow. I didn't enjoy Metal Gear Solids 1 or 2 but I felt like I really should, kind of like William Gaddis. Also it is called SNAKE EATER which I assumed was a bad pun but according to a review I read part of the game involves EATING SNAKES. I think this is a great development, moving game titles away from melodramatic crap like Killzone back to simple, descriptive stuff like Asteroids, Millipede, or Snake Eater, the game about eating snakes.

-- adam (hexenductio...), November 18th, 2004. (adam) (later)

I'm not implying that William Gaddis feels the same way I do about Metal Gear Solids 1 and 2, more that I feel the same way about MGS1+2 as I do about William Gaddis.

I don't know how William Gaddis feels about the games in question.

i put the double exclamation marks after "new" because it seems so unlikely a climate for someone to open a new indie record store. i'm afraid they'll go the way of the evanston reckless records and that record store on belmont which recently closed but was kind of crappy anyway but well you get my point. so i hope to do what i can by spreading the word. it's actually worth a drive down to hyde park even if you're on the north side. they have a bunch of ethiopiques volumes for sale still, and a bunch of kevin ayers reissues, and that aphex twin remixes thing for like $10, etc. oh and the creedence clearwater revival box set, but i've sort of got my eye on that.
-- amateur!!st (-...) (webmail), November 24th, 2004 6:01 PM. (link)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i worry that the very hip (in a good sense) nature of their existing stock will cause a problem, because although hyde park is smarming with undergrads with presumably hip tastes, that didn't save reckless in evanston. the hyde park record stores with any longevity tend to cater equally or more to the tastes of the many black residents of hyde park and surrounding neighborhoods by stocking lots of r&b dusties and jazz etc. they do have a bunch of that but maybe not enough? i dunno. i really hope that they make it. like i wrote. just above.

I like the powerhouse-yet-vulnerable female vocal over fairly typical powerpop tune motif, but don't know any other bands that do it well. Listened to a band called Co-Ed (?) on recommendation (based on these two likes) and liked approximately one of the songs and not very much.

ezthrust writes "I have always considered it a major oversight on Apple's part not to include an English Canadian localization in OSX. I am wondering where the dictionary files are located that contain the DEFAULT spellings in American English so I can go in and change the spelling to Canadian English. I have thought of just typing them in TextEdit and then adding them. But that is not good enough. I want to get rid of the corresponding words in the dictionary ("colour, coloured, colours and colouring" would replace "color, colored, colors and coloring") Of course I would then offer the file for download on versiontracker.com or some other site for free, so that other frustrated Canadian Apple users may benefit."

Tooooo many software projects fail. A team may take too long to deliver the product. Tehy may deliver a product that nodody wants. Or just never deliver it all all. Too oftem, it seems that authors writing asnout software development either rehash old ideas that haven't worked, or come up with new ideas that won/t work. we see it aain and again, a new fad repklaces thefa9;ed 0old fad. the mantsa goes o7ut and everi8ones repatws: "we're structured, no we're objectified, no we're unified and we're extremely agile."

It's like Prince only in that the lyrics are the work of a strenuously retarded libido.

Apart from that, it's a classic. And Prince couldn't rock this hard if his purple little life depended on it.

True, but it might be agrued that, lyrically at least, the silliness was very thickly spread:

Without warning
A wizard walks by

Is it normal for there to be a warning when a wizard walks by? Perhaps someone comes along ringing a bell and shouts, 'He ye! Hear ye! A wizard will soon be walking by!' But in this case, it didn't happen: there was no warning. The wizard just walked by and took everyone by surprise.

I still don't understand this weird line that critics feel themselves to be "below" musicians, or envy them. By all objective standards, critics get the better deal. We don't have to tour around in crappy vans, or spend hours trying to EQ a hi-hat: we just get to shoot our mouths off about whether other people are doing it right. We get paid more than they do, and are likely to do what we do for a lot longer than they do. They, in fact, have to pay other people, publicists, to send us the music they've worked so hard to make, pretty much begging for our approval and praise, and we just pick the stuff up from the mailbox and make fun of the press sheets and talk shit about them on message boards. They go around having strings of crappy relationships and writing songs about it, whereas most of the music writers I know are happily married and have cute little apartments with custom-made CD shelves. Envy? Envy? Dude, they're working on the line: we're management.

i once had a girlfriend who properly smelled. everyone else thought she was really hot, and alone i carried the burden of knowing that everything below her waistline smelt like rotting meat. looking back i now think this was our pheromones communicating: if we had had babies, they would have had three eyes or something, but one day she'll meet a man who thinks she tastes better than anything he's ever eaten, and they will love each other forever.
