We are back with the THIRD installment of the console games poll, this time the 5th generation of consoles! Included consoles:
Sony PlaystationNintendo 64 (and 64DD)Sega Saturn3DO Interactive MultiplayerPC-FXAtari Jaguar (and Jaguar CD)Virtual BoyGame Boy Color (strictly GBC-only games -- GB games were in a previous poll)Neo Geo Pocket and Pocket ColorWONDERSWAN!!!
And some also-rans that maybe you wanna vote for games for...
FM Towns Marty, Amiga CD32, Apple Bandai Pippin, Playdia, Casio Loopy
Finally, 3D! I mean, I guess there was technically start fox and stunt race fx, but... yeah. CDs with CD-quality audio! 32 bits! SIXTY FOUR BITS! Memory cards that you forget to buy and you play the first 10 minutes of FFVII over and over because you have no way to save! Truly the most tragic generation for those who didn't read their Diehard Gamefan before making a purchase.
Drop your nominations in this thread. After a month, we'll begin the voting process, and after another month I'll begin the rollout. Please include the console for which you are nominating! This is one of the last generations where it makes a big difference (PS2/Xbox is truly where we start getting virtually identical titles on both machines).

The answer to my own question, which I should have either checked or remembered, is that Sony rebranded the PlayStation as the PSone in 200, and it didn't cease production until 2006.

yesssss to ledge bringing the first-generation rhythm games to the front. i would have totally forgotten to nominate Bust-A-Groove but that soundtrack was a BLAST, perfect "rental" game for this generation.i know this period WAY less than the preceding one, but it did have a smattering of games i played the hell out of. most have already been nommed! a few overlooked N64 titles:
TetrisphereSuper Smash BrothersThe Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
― Doctor Casino, Monday, 5 October 2020 13:56 (four years ago) link
There was some bust-a-groove soundtrack chat here:
Laugh and Peace - Vib-Ribbon OST
I could be wrong (my memory is terrible) but I think I played all those rhythm games on a PS2 thanks to backwards compatability.
― neith moon (ledge), Monday, 5 October 2020 14:06 (four years ago) link
I still have my PS1 rhythm games and am endlessly haunted by the fact that PS1 discs have just a tiny bit of lag on the PS3, thereby rendering all rhythm games essentially unplayable.

i raise this question with every poll with nominations, i think, but is there any reason we can't just nominate all the games from a comprehensive list? i totally forgot about Mario Party but i would probably make my ballot - there's just so many games

maybe nom list plus option for write-ins? and people can campaign in the voting thread. i feel like i'd be more likely to miss a great game with a comprehensive list, as my eyes glaze over scrolling past all the dross.

― jmm, Friday, 9 October 2020 18:14 (four years ago) link
SF Rush! Forgot about that one. Good stuff.
― DJI, Friday, 9 October 2020 18:14 (four years ago) link
this era has the largest gap between how these games looked in my head, and how they look when i pull up YouTube clips. i know we're tired of talking about low-res textures and elementary polygons, but MAN a lot of these games took place in a bleak, lifeless-feeling universe... combined often with unnatural "bonking into corners" control schemes struggling to catch up to Mario 64's effortless 3D movement. the graphics thing i think is at least partially explainable by these games being meant for the visual 'smudging' of a CRT screen.
in that spirit i hereby nominate a Mega Man game that i played more than it may have deserved, because it was bright and colorful in an era of faded mud:
PS1Mega Man 8
― Doctor Casino, Friday, 9 October 2020 18:37 (four years ago) link
sorry to return to this, haha, but i think the reason the nominations process for any poll bugs me is because i end up going to the giant comprehensive list to figure out what to nominate, anyway, because i know i'll forget some that i would have voted for
― president of my cat (Karl Malone), Friday, 9 October 2020 18:44 (four years ago) link
for example,
PS1Dragon Quest VII
― president of my cat (Karl Malone), Friday, 9 October 2020 18:46 (four years ago) link
I've been looking thru comprehensive lists too, doing one at a time kinda thing (saturn is next), as much as I'd be down to just use those lists, i think the nom process makes it easier to separate the wheat from the chaff. i am totally ok with write-ins if sometihng is forgotten too, and if someone flags it in the voting post, i can just add it to the nominations!
― TRANCED INTO RADIOACTIVE PUREE (Will M.), Friday, 9 October 2020 21:46 (four years ago) link
sounds good, thanks! tbh i think we'll cover almost everything that's good, not sure why i'm being nitpicky
― president of my cat (Karl Malone), Friday, 9 October 2020 22:39 (four years ago) link
probably not going to be able to put together a ballot as i am too young to have really spent much time with many games from this era and i haven't really rated that many of them that much. the top 2 for me is easily majora's mask and metal gear solid though, they really tower above everything else
may as well nominate a few i actually did play at the time though. i tried going back to rayman years later and it was baffling difficult and not particularly great. i have fond memories of the spyro games from when i was 5 but haven't touched them since
PS1Spyro: Year of the DragonSpyro 2: Ripto's RageRayman
