Charming Breaking News...

Apparently the State Department has just issued some sort of advisory to all Americans living abroad to make certain that they are prepared to leave their country of current residence/visit at a moment's notice (have prescriptions filled, all paperwork ready, clothes packed, etc.), in case of economic turmoil or other catastrophic events. Should anything be read into this statement? (And why can't I find the text for the announcement on the State Dept.'s website? Is CNN making this up?)

(Actually, I am not *that* paranoid.)

At the moment I reckon I'd feel much safe in France, Germany, Russia or anywhere other than the US or the UK. i reckon we should take this the the 12 ft Lizards are about to launch the new world order (Hulk Hogan will rule the world).

Ed (dali), Friday, 24 January 2003 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Nuff said?

They Can Fuck Right Off, I'm Not Leaving (suzy), Friday, 24 January 2003 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

So, did you (or people you know) actually have a plan back around 9-11? I mean, americans in the US as well. Bags packed? Plan of where to go/ what to do if there were more attacks?

Just wondering.

I didn't. But my mom did lots of research and had her trunk totally filled to the brim for quite a while with essentials in case she needed to go into hiding. Now it's your turn to say she wasn't the only one.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 24 January 2003 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

where does this say this on CNN? link?

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 24 January 2003 19:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I do remember during the weekend before 9/11 hearing a news report that vaguely talked of reported possible threats to U.S. interests. Suzy, you're probably fine where you are but I wouldn't completely dismiss this.

I'd already read speculation that Bush is waiting until after the Super Bowl and/or the State of the Union address to declare war on Iraq; this new announcement would fit in with this.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Is there a thread on the super bowl yet? Whose playing? I never pay attention to these things, but I'm feeling a slight need to be more cultured...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah, I had no plan then or now - well, I had a plan post 9/11 for evacuating work (the space center was considered to be a legit. target and security was crazy for a while) - anyway, I didn't and don't have any plans for evacuating immediately. My father is a bit of a conspiracy theorist and he does have a semi-bunker (though last time I saw it, it was filled with some lawn-mower parts). But no-one else I knew/know had any sort of "we're packed and ready to go" attitude.

Er, but I do have a list tacked to the wall, in every room, listing what to grab in case of evacuation - those were put-up three years ago, when were evacuated for a wildfire and had 10 minutes to pack and leave - I ended-up packing four toothbrushes and no toothpaste - so much for my survival skills. Oh, and to further come to think of it, since I live in the path of hurricanes, I do have a closet stocked with canned food, water, copies of important papers, prescriptions, etc. Sheesh - how I'm beginning to sound paranoid!

Donut - the CNN thing was a "breaking news" announcement about 2:15 EST. Haven't found it on their site, though.

Oh, and back to Sarah for a second - it's the Oakland Raiders VS. Tampa Bay Pirates and they're playing in San Diego (not something I'd usually know, but I accidentally ended-up listening to some sports report last night while washing fruit).

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Raiders! Buccaneers! ALL PIRATE SUPER BOWL!

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Here's the link to the story on the CNN site - it was buried.

http://www.cnn.com/2003/TRAVEL/ADVISOR/01/24/overseas.warning.reut/index.html

I particularly like the ' "We're asking our embassies to remind Americans ... to take normal preparations, routine preparations, to leave if for some reason, whatever it might be, they might have to," ' quote. Kinda seems to imply things, doesn't it?

No, let's all move to Berlin and start an eerily familiar kind of modern cultural renaissance.

Get On A Plane To Mericky, Moi? (suzy), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

No, let's all move to Berlin and start an eerily familiar kind of modern cultural renaissance.

Not the worst idea. I think I might be eligible for German citizenship.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

speculation that Bush is waiting until after the Super Bowl...to declare war on Iraq

naw, that'll be the halftime show!!

geeta, Friday, 24 January 2003 22:17 (twenty-three years ago)

naw, that'll be the halftime show!!

Do you think they might have the good/bad taste to use "Bombs Over Baghdad" as the musical backing?

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 24 January 2003 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

9/11 I took precautions. I closed my windows to stop the jet fuel smoke and ash billowing in. And I spent a lot of money on mineral water, because rumours were circulating that the New York City water supply might get poisoned.

I am seriously moving to Berlin in February, because I like the cut of their jib, damn it. Anybody who wants to join me in Friedrichshain and start a peacenik renaissance is totally welcome. A two room apartment there is 400 euros a month.

Momus (Momus), Friday, 24 January 2003 22:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Why are Berlin rents so cheap, Momus? Was there a sudden glut of vacant apartments after reunification?

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 24 January 2003 22:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Congrats on the move, Momus - I shall be in greater envy of you now. (And you're inspiring me to brush-up on my German, too. What a good influence you are.)

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 24 January 2003 22:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I admit I had you in mind when I wrote that, Nick.

Feargus might be going back there to live, and he's top marks in the wit and decadence departments, so maybe you want to club in with him? Let me know, it would be the good bits of Isherwood all over again.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 24 January 2003 22:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I shall envy you less, as I am such a big fan of many things Japanese. Still, you might get to hang out with Atari Teenage Riot.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 24 January 2003 22:39 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe bush will run out onto the field during halftime and press the button himself!

geeta, Friday, 24 January 2003 22:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Martin, I was just given a copy of "Japanese Street Slang." A perfectly delightful little book to browse through and memorize.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 24 January 2003 22:42 (twenty-three years ago)

So what was that movie where the terrorists took over the Super Bowl (I've not seen it, only heard it mentioned)? And, didn't Clancy write something about a nuke and the Super Bowl (again, no first-hand knowledge of said subject)?

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 24 January 2003 22:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Why are Berlin rents so cheap, Momus? Was there a sudden glut of vacant apartments after reunification?

Tons of money has been spent on reconstructing Berlin in the ten years since reunification, but apparently nobody from the rest of Germany -- people, companies -- wants to move there. It's too cold, too far away from everywhere else, and seen as too full of weirdos -- like me! As a result, it's got a lot of unemployment, great infrastructure, and is full of students, hippies, artists... A kind of Prague of the north.

I shall envy you less, as I am such a big fan of many things Japanese.

I'll be in Tokyo for three months in the summer. The only thing that dismays me a bit about Berlin is that you can't get direct flights to places like the US and Japan from there. You have to change at Frankfurt. Apparently, despite this being the capital of Germany, there just isn't the demand for direct flights. But then why would anyone want to leave anyway?

Momus (Momus), Friday, 24 January 2003 22:45 (twenty-three years ago)

The one Super Bowl/Terrorist movie that comes to mind is Black Sunday with a supremely deranged Bruce Dern.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Friday, 24 January 2003 23:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm...was it horrid, Chris, or worth viewing?

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 24 January 2003 23:01 (twenty-three years ago)

But you guys do realize, right, that the State Department issues a lot of advisories like this -- at differing levels of severity, sure, but quite often nonetheless?

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 24 January 2003 23:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I do, Nabisco - it was just the wording and the timing and the fact that it was covered as "Breaking News" that I was commenting on - the fact that basically everything these days gets covered as being big and dramatic news, regardless of how normal/average/typical such an event is considered to be. Basically, it feels to me as though the American mass media is feeding into the panic/chaos - creating an incident when there isn't one.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 24 January 2003 23:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm waiting for the State Department to send drones to wander around city streets, saying to no one in particular, "We have credible reports that you should DUCK."

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 24 January 2003 23:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm ashamed that I chuckled at that. Thanks.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 24 January 2003 23:32 (twenty-three years ago)

That's me, bringin' on the shame.
