I tire of my cd collection.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

To hell with good girls

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Tiger Trap. That Dog. Pee Shy.

And some newer ones that might require some searching.... We Start Fires. Harvey H.D. The Fairy Traders.

OK, that was 6, not 1, but...

kate, Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

The Mary Jane Girls.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I have Tiger Trap and That Dog. I'll check out the others. Thankxxx.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Check out he Girls in the Garage comps. Exxxccceeellleent.
The old stand bys- X Ray Spex, Runaways, Delta 5, Liliput, Raincoats, Girlschool, Suzi Quatro, Rondelles, Au Pairs, Softies, Slumber Party...

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Ultrababyfat

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Cub, Henry's Dress, Juniper Moon, Vacaiones, Nosotrash.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Seriously, The Be Good Tanya's... twee.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I totally second SLUMBER PARTY... Though the self-titled album is better than the new one.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha! Make Sarah tell her Rondelles story.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I third Slumber Party!

kate, Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

But I guess you also must check out Dolly Mixture.

Dressy Bessy, Heavenly, Godzuki, Komeda = more nice pop with girl vocals.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

They're not together anymore, and they did have a guy drummer at the end, and they're not particularly obscure, but Jale was grate! They became the V's and then disappeared (I think).

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

What is di's group called again? I've forgotten. International Telepathies? I need to get one of those cds. And a Lollies cd. They're not released in the US, are they? CAn I mail order them?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

So, Sarah, didn't you have something to tell us about the Rondelles?

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Kittie

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I like this group Furslide quite a bit. Their singer/guitarist/songwriter (Jennifer Turner) was the lead guitarist on Natalie Merchant's Carnival album. Very good stuff, k-dreamy and really creative.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

From the Dolly Mixture onto Birdie - which is fronted by the same lady, and has the best backing vocals/flutes in recent memory. I have been listening to the Shop Assitants and France Gall (but she doesn't count as a group). Also the Swedish indiepop scene has been chugging out girl-fronted pop groups all year - too many to go into detail.

marianna, Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

You can order the Lollies CD through:

kate, Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and Brassy. I love Brassy.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I checked out the All Girl Summer Fun Band on Nab's recommendation and they are pretty fun.

I have a soft spot for Dear Nora.

Call and Response have more girls than guys.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

We have a couple of good bands here in Winnipeg: Sixty Stories and Paper Moon who are both on Endearing Records.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Fo to the Elefant records site and you'll find loads of good stuff, if you can navigate it.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Nickalicious, I have the Furslide cd & I saw them play at CMJ in New York a few years ago.

The Rondelles... hmmm... I don't know if I should tell that story. I was almost their bassist (after Yukiko). The audition made for a very bizarre weekend. Then they didn't call me for a month so I figured I didn't make it. Then out of the blue I get this call asking when I'd be able to come up to practice for the upcoming show. I was like, "Whaaa? But you didn't call me in so long so I had already decided I didn't make it." So I agreed to come up to practice. Then cancelled at the last minute because I remembered how weird everything was.
THE END?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I've seen the Slumber Party play. They wore cute matching sixties dresses and played Danelectro guitars.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Slumber Party had their first rehearsals in my basement quite a few years ago... they used to sound like the Shaggs.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:28 (twenty-three years ago)

My computer is a dumbass. Whenever I click on NEXT after filling out my information to get kate's cd, I get a stupid pop-up that requires me getting off the internet. *sigh* I guess I'll try in a few hours.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Give me MORE!!!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Klymaxx

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Veruca Salt

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Anything where Pam Berry sings also is great! Shapiros, Black Tambourine, Glo-Worm, the Pines.

marianna, Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I once thought I was the biggest veruca salt fan EVER.
Then one day I was standing in line to get autographs... When the girl in front of me got up to the table, Nina Gordon was like, "Oh my god! I know you! I have this picture of you dancing on my dining room table... ha ha ha! Oh, that was so much fun.. ha ha ha..." I TOTALLY rolled my eyes.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Pretty Girls Make Graves

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

60s girl group; The Chiffons, specially Sweet Talkin' Guy

80s loud raucous girly indie punk; the Shop Assistants, specially, I Don't Wanna Be Friends With You

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:07 (twenty-three years ago)

If only I still had access to a college radio station... *sigh*

Sarah MCLusky (coco), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Why don't me make a C90 Girls Girls Girls tapes (or whatever) for you?

marianna, Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I second the Girls in Garage comps. (The Whyte Boots' "Nightmare" is particularly popular around here.) If you can find it, Histoires de Filles: Girl Group Power is good. I like the Ultra Chicks compilations but they aren't bands.

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Ok. Go for it.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Ok, so I've started this thread: C90: Girls Girls Girls

I guess take your recommendations over there w/ a song name as well?

marianna, Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:29 (twenty-three years ago)

daniel tiger has more girls than guys.

Mandeee, Thursday, 27 March 2003 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 27 March 2003 17:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Hang On The Box!

largehearted boy (largeheartedboy), Thursday, 27 March 2003 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Angelica!

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 27 March 2003 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Two of my favorites right now are Sahara Hotnights and Mikabomb. SHN are similar to the Donnas but replace the idiotic lyrics with more cryptic and emotional verses. Mikabomb is a super-catchy Japanese pop-punk band, though I think they live in London.

If you want me to burn you a sample CD-R just drop me a note off-list, I can whip something up.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Thursday, 27 March 2003 17:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I have Sahara Hotnights and recently saw them in concert. Mikabomb sounds cool.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 27 March 2003 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

The Clouds! (the Clouds from Australia that is)

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Thursday, 27 March 2003 17:29 (twenty-three years ago)

again: JUNIPER MOON! 3rd MP3 on this page: (removed coz the link doesn't work, but seek out the elefant page anyhow)

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 27 March 2003 17:42 (twenty-three years ago)

See if you can dig up "Contact Tokyo" by Mikabomb (or maybe it's Mika Bomb), it's almost as addictive as ILXOR. Like Heavenly meets the Ramones. Their album is called The Fake Fake Sound of Mikabomb.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Thursday, 27 March 2003 18:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Bettie Serveert, Deerhoof, ESG, Faith Hill, Mr. Airplane Man, One True Thing, Paybacks, T.A.T.U., Allison Moorer, Color Guard, Gore Gore Girls, Kills, Kirby Grips, Lana Lane, LeAnn Rimes, Les Baton Rouge, Northern State, Quix*o*tic, Shakira, SheDaisy, Tift Merritt, Distillers, the Gathering, Kandi, Koffee Brown, Korin Allal, Lava Baby, Martina McBride, Pretty Suicide, Sheila Chandra, Texas Terri and the Stiff Ones, Space Ballerinas, the Operators, Angels in Heavy Syrup, Lacuna Coil, Arificial Joy Club, Kevin Blechdom, Laika, NY Rel-X, Scrawl, Theatre of Tragedy, Blaque, Daphne and Celeste, Spice Girls, Aterciopelados, Santa Sabina, M2M, Au Pairs, Fuzzbox, etc.

olga, Thursday, 27 March 2003 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah Scrawl rules. Slant 6 not mentioned yet? You have the Softies and Tiger Trap but how bout Go Sailor? That first EP is great. Do you have all the VS b-sides/rarities? I assume you do, but they have some great nonalbum stuff.

Aaron A., Thursday, 27 March 2003 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Highly recommend the works of Azita Youssefi: all Scissor Girls albums, Bride of No No "B.O.N.N. Apetit", AZ "Music for Scattered Brains", and newly released Azita "Enantiodromia".

Paula G., Thursday, 27 March 2003 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The new Shesus album (ex-GBV, ex-Brainiac) is surprisingly good girl-fronted, vaguely new-wave rock. It gets kinda old (it's way too long), but even this misogynist digs some of it! (i dunno why i think this, but sterling: you would like this record)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 27 March 2003 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I know I already said Brassy once, but listening to "Too Much For You" or whatever it's called right now, I must re-recommend them. They're one of the funnest bands evah!

Another one of my faves is Cibo Matto, but they're more like "girls with synths and samplers" than "girls with guitars", not sure if'n that's what McLusty is needing.

Also, there's a band from Chicago called 1/2 Mad Poet that my band had the pleasure of playing with, and they totally rock in a very unique way. I think their website is http://www.halfmadpoet.com.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 27 March 2003 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

mr. airplane man are a two girl group. garage with a heavy delta blues vibe.
throwing muses have a new one out. go tanya! go kirsten!

kephm, Thursday, 27 March 2003 19:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I already posted this on ILM, but it deserves to go here, too:

LUNACHICKS

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 27 March 2003 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I have the new Throwing Muses, all the Veruca Salt singles, and Go Sailor. Keep up the good work!

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Thursday, 27 March 2003 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Bantam (Gina from the Lunachicks' new band). The Gits. The Plasmatics. Wendy O. William's solo albums. Betty Blowtorch. Concrete Blonde, L7, Babes in Toyland, 7 Year Bitch, Hole.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 27 March 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I second Babes In Toyland. I hate that people hate them.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 27 March 2003 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, of the ones I mentioned, the following are ROCK BANDS with GUITARS. (Not sure why that's even relevant, since it's the kind of thing only STUPID BOYS should care about, and since lots of the NON-ROCK BANDS with NO GUTIARS rock a lot harder, and since Babes in Toyland sucked, but what the heck): Bettie Serveert, Deerhoof, ESG, Mr. Airplane Man, One True Thing, Paybacks, Color Guard, Gore Gore Girls, Kills, Kirby Grips, Lana Lane, Les Baton Rouge, Quix*o*tic, Distillers, the Gathering, Lava Baby, Pretty Suicide, Texas Terri and the Stiff Ones, Space Ballerinas, the Operators, Angels in Heavy Syrup, Lacuna Coil, Arificial Joy Club, NY Rel-X, Scrawl, Theatre of Tragedy, Aterciopelados, Santa Sabina, M2M, Au Pairs, Fuzzbox.

olga, Thursday, 27 March 2003 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Oops, M2M are NOT a rock band with guitars! And maybe not ESG, either.

olga, Thursday, 27 March 2003 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

> I second Babes In Toyland. I hate that people hate them.

different strokes...

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 27 March 2003 20:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I s'pose.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 27 March 2003 20:29 (twenty-three years ago)

i just heard "Circle" by Versus, great song. There's plenty of Fontaine Toups greatness in the Verus disco.

Aaron A., Thursday, 27 March 2003 20:44 (twenty-three years ago)

+++I have the new Throwing Muses

yeah? and how do you like it? i have gone as far as picking it up and walking around the store with it...

kephm, Thursday, 27 March 2003 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

from melbourne: The Bites and Royal Chord are two ace all (mostly?) girl bands

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 27 March 2003 23:21 (twenty-three years ago)

sarah our CD isn't finished yet, but when it is you are welcome to order it (just e-mail me, i run the record label). i heartily reccomend to you the scissor girls, btw.

di smith (lucylurex), Thursday, 27 March 2003 23:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Scisssor Girls were great! Of all the things on this thread, though, I'm most inclined to think Sarah would like Slant 6. (This also makes me want to throw in a bid for Helium, a little? The Dirt of Luck has a number of good bits.)

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 27 March 2003 23:51 (twenty-three years ago)

what he said. and jim you forgot 99!

di smith (lucylurex), Thursday, 27 March 2003 23:53 (twenty-three years ago)

On the twee front Rainy is big on this band called The Brunettes. There's only one girl but how cute is this?

http://www.nzmusic.com/media/artist/b/brunettes.jpg

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 27 March 2003 23:56 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah 99 (although i'm not as big a fan of them as some people round Melb are..)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 28 March 2003 00:02 (twenty-three years ago)

hey sarah, if you like country you should check out the following pees: lucinda williams, gillian welch, the renderers.

di smith (lucylurex), Friday, 28 March 2003 00:41 (twenty-three years ago)

i've been to see electrelane more times than any other band in the last two years (about 6 times), so i must like them a lot! (also the drummer is so hot!)

jeanne picot (jeanne picot), Friday, 28 March 2003 01:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I vote for scrap too, an existing ILM thread can be found here.

nickn (nickn), Friday, 28 March 2003 06:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Uh, Scral, not scrap.

nickn (nickn), Friday, 28 March 2003 06:28 (twenty-three years ago)

peas in pods, Friday, 28 March 2003 08:24 (twenty-three years ago)

the new throwing muses is great! i really dig it, although i don't have any of their other records to compare them against. and in case you're wondering, i think tanya donnelly does backing vox but doesn't participate otherwise.

Dave M. (rotten03), Friday, 28 March 2003 08:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Not a rock band, and no guitars involved, but get thee to some Printed Circuit for some happy fun disco girltronica with 808s and casiotoned Kylie Minogue samples!

kate, Friday, 28 March 2003 09:51 (twenty-three years ago)

sarge! sarge! jel is OTM!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 28 March 2003 13:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I really enjoy the new Throwing Muses. Tanya sings backups on 4 songs I think and those are my favorites for the nostalgic value at least. (I have old Throwing Muses and lots of Belly and Tanya's solo stuff) The cover art on that album is really awesome.

I have all the Mary Timony/Helium stuff, both Slant 6 albums and Autoclave and even Quixotic. One day I will have the bestest collection in the entire universe!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 28 March 2003 13:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I second Babes In Toyland. I hate that people hate them.

It suX0r because they were brilliant and I still lurve them!

Also, has anyone mentioned Bratmobile? If not, they should.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 28 March 2003 13:54 (twenty-three years ago)

The Dishes rock hard.

That Girl (thatgirl), Friday, 28 March 2003 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

The Hissyfits, Doris.
